Morris chair is home !!

| Well all I can say is wow ! I am so pleased. The original chair was $123. The cushions were made by my local upholsterer. He had some leather from sofas that he had salvaged as the hotel was throwing it out. It is butter soft. He charged $90 labor/$70 for 20 sq ft leather...used French seams and $43 for the cushions. It is a perfect color for the Native American art and rugs in the upstairs. DH sat in it and was really pleased with his birthday/Father's Day present.
If it wasn't for this forum my eyes would never have
"seen" this chair and its potential. Thank you all...
Here is the before pic:
Here is the chair insitu ( note the colors in the Native rug on the bannister in the background hand made in NM) :

| Nope. Hate it. Terrible, awful - just doesn't go with your things at all. Send it to me ... I'll do you a favor and take it off your hands ... OK, seriously, I think you are one lucky duck/smart cookie for getting your hands on this chair and transforming it so! It is indeed the perfect complement to your Native American art, and I'm so happy that you've brought it home to live with you. But if you ever get tired of it, well -- you know where to find me. ;-) |

| That is an amazing find Caroline! It turned out beautifully. That leather will just smoosh and crinkle and age so nicely. And I have never seen that room before- I love it and the art you have. |

| YOu guys are great. pbrisjar:it does feel like it belongs, I am glad you see it too ...perfect with the room colors and all the wood. squirrel: I love getting stuff and fixing it...wish I had more talent like you !! I am glad the leather didn't get tossed. Jen: you know you are on the list for all the Native stuff I have if ever...well you know...noone in my family wants it...thank you .... Sue: thank you !! We had the attic in this house converted to living space soon after we moved in. They started Fall 2002- ended Spring 2003. It took 6 months to have it done. Added 1300 sq ft to the house. I love it since it is so airy and different from the downstairs. We matched the moldings in some places and paint to keep a thread of the same idea going but it is definitely a different space. I just finished using Restore a finish on the chair. It had all of this dark "stuff" that some dumb dumb had put on the wood. The spindles were HARD to do but it is done now. I will post before and after pics on another thread for those that are interested in RAF. c |

| Oh, isn't that wonderful! You made excellent choices and it's beautiful and classic and yummy. What's going on with your curbside chair find? I've been wondering about that. Are you turning it purple? |

| Oh my gosh, Trailrunner, I always follow your posts in the kitchen forum but rarely say anything because I'm so in awe of what you do. That is a beautiful restoration of that chair and it does fit so beautifully. Your window treatment is great and the track light goes so well with it all even though it is modern. Most people (me) wouldn't think to put these things together but you make it all look just wonderful. Wow! |

Ditto of everything that has already been said! I love the "whole" project/room/decor...great choices... [I'm going to buy a can of RAF and try it on a Victorian table that my mom (90 yrs young) has given to me] What a great group of "ladies" on this forum! |

| ohhhhh...it really turned out nice! Love the leather, looks so soft! I only hope that when we recover our cushions we can find something nearly as nice. It looks lovely in your room. Curious minds want to know, how did you decided to "do" the underside of the chair? Marylu |

| OMGosh ! I just opened this thread and saw all the very sweet and supportive comments. THANK YOU !! oceanna: I am glad it turned out so well. I talked to my upholsterer about the "other" curb find chair. He says he can make the padding and put the roll pad along the front to shape it and I will staple and attach the fabric. He is going to guide me on the project. A new fabric store just opened so I am going to go exploring. I'll keep you posted. flseadog: what a nice thing to say, I really appreciate it. The WT is from PB. I was just lamenting not getting the blinds that filter light but you can see thru them. cat_mom has them in her study and new bathroom and I LOVE THEM. I may yet change these out but for now they were very inexpensive and I love the long rod. thank you cat_mom ! thank you too Jan and Jenny! Irish I hope you will post pics too. Thank you . He does love it mrsmarv ! He said it is a nice as the chair we liked in NYC..it was 7K !! Yikes ! Thank you sheesharee, kelly , roobear and walkin' ! You are all so great to "see" it , it really helps to have the eyes of this forum. marylu: thank you ! we left the wood just as it was. decided that anything else would be too much trouble and expense. It gives it nice support so I am glad we didn't change it out to springs. thanks again for your pics...it really helped. pesky: thank you ...I hope you will post pics. I would love to see what you decide. c |

| Chiming in late...your wonderful rescue of this chair is perfectly timed for me. We have a great friend who lets us stay in his house whenever we're in his city. He collects American Arts & Crafts furniture, and has a Morris chair with no cushions. Just this week we were there, and I took a photo of the chair and noted its dimensions while he was't looking so that I could have cushions made for him as a thank-you present for all the free nights and all the breakfasts. And there your chair was, done, to inspire me! Thank you. You are always inspiring, for your energy and talent, and your generosity in showing us all what can be done. The chair in question:

| Thank you loribee: I love all your pics too !! oceanna: DH wishes I would go in business and has suggested it NUMEROUS times LOL. Get rid of all this stuff ! He is a sweet man and just shakes his head. susan thank you. I love our "treehouse" space upstairs too. I was lucky. He says his standard charge for labor is $45 per cushion. I think that is great. :) Hey Norma: it isn't quite that soft but it is old leather and will soften even more with use. It is very comfy. I'll tell him he is lucky :) bronwynsmom: you are very sweet to say such nice things...thank you very much. There is so much talent on this forum and as I have said before I have learned so much from everyone . The tips and suggestions and the pictures that are worth a 1000 words really help make us all better at creating spaces we love in our respective homes. That chair is absolutely wonderful. What a great friend you are to plan to do this for him. You now have an idea of what is possbible . There is no need to have spring etc in the chair. The cushy/support can be adjusted by varying what you put in the cushions. Mine are med foam wrapped in a poly to give the cushions a softer shape. Also the French seams are better as the others cut into your legs when you sit on them. As I noted he said it took 20 sq ft of fabric. If you would like me to measure my chair and the cushions I would be glad to do so if it will help you make decisions. Again...thank you c yeh right cat ! You wanna pay 1/2 ?? |

Thank you, trailrunner...I took careful measurements when I was there skulking around behind his back, but thank you for offering. I'm a great friend to him because he is one to me! Funny how that works... I will most likely have the cushions made in a neutral linen, because i think it would embarrass him for me to use the leather the chair deserves...a little too spendy for the appropriate size of the gift...but I'm doing my homework, and he will then have correctly proportioned cushions that he can have recovered in the leather of his choice. I'd hate to stick him with a color when he has something else in mind. |

| Just snapped this pic of DH using his chair...he is in it every afternoon these days...
I think that is a great idea to cover it that way and then he can change them out as he desires. Again what an amazingly thoughtful gift. You are right we get back 10 fold what we give. |

| If I paid 1/2 for your chair, I wouldn't have any $ to buy my little stools......... |

| Caroline!!! Up to your old tricks again, I see... and torturing your poor husband with them! (Yes, he looks really tortured in that picture - LOL!) It came it *beautifully*! I am just so impressed with you - as always. :-) |
