should I replace light in bedroom?

We are completely remodeling our master bath and updating the bedroom. We added 4" recessed lighting in the bedroom ceiling (7 lights around the perimeter of the room) and I am considering whether to replace or keep the ceiling fan. I'm looking for your thoughts.

Here is the room before we moved the furniture out and before the recessed lights were added. We also added white crown molding. The new carpet will be darker. The bedding is white. I think new drapes will be white too (that's another question) The room is 14'x20' and has a 9' ceiling.

I was thinking about this light in the white shade with oil rubbed bronze:

What size? the small size 19.5" diameter or the large 25.25" diameter?

Do you use the fan at all? I would tend to just take the light off the fan and keep the fan since you added all that lighting in the ceiling--if you use the fan.

We don't use the fan, so that really isn't an issue.

Are ceiling fans dated?

Ceiling fans will NEVER be dated because they are so useful.

I don't think they're dated...though some can be...I think they aren't attractive but their usefulness offsets that....unless you're in the tropics where they look totally appropriate.

If you're not using it, get rid of it and put in a decorative chandelier.

Just recently, I was so glad I had not removed the ceiling fan from my bedroom. The air conditioner experienced a night of not working - if it had not been for having the ceiling fan, I would have gotten no sleep. My vote is to keep the ceiling fan. As palimpsest said, just remove the light from the fan.

If you never use the fan, I would use the smaller of the two sizes of fixture you show. If you use the fan even occasionally I would keep it, or you will end up missing it.

I am not a fan :( of ceiling fans with lights on them, but I think a plain ceiling fan can be useful in bedrooms.

lights went on sale at RH -- so now I need to decide. I want to ditch the fan.

Here's my inspiration picture:

I've ordered a bench and matching drapes in a black/tan check. I'm starting with just 2 panels for the french doors that you can't see in my first picture. Then maybe I'll have shades made or order more panels.

Meanwhile, I want to make a light decision. I don't think I ever would have picked out the light in my inspiration picture.

This has been the light fixture I keep coming back to:

but is it too boring?

I want the light to be interesting and now that we've added recessed lighting, we don't even need the light to provide much light.

Your inspiration photo isn't very Mid-Century Modern, but the light fixture is. Are you using the same bed and chest as in the first photo? If not, what is your new furniture like?

I am using the same furniture as posted in my very first picture. The carpet will be replaced, crown molding was added. It's definitely not mid-century modern.

I'm going for a more a relaxed, classic look.

I'm a fan person - I would love to have a chandelier in my bedroom but I can't give up the moving air at nite. It seems to relax me.
As for your recessed lights - you may want to add two small spots with a switch on both sides of the bed, and a switch where your other recessed lights are located. I put them in and love them for reading. I did the main switch but only one by the bed and I'm forever reaching over to turn it off and on.

There are certain times when a bedroom can get over warm, and during those times, it is very useful to have a ceiling fan. ;-)

If you never use the fan, though, replace it with a light you love. If you keep coming back to the same light, then it's very likely it will make you happy.

Is your wall color darker than that of your inspiration room? If so, you will definitely want to lighten up the dark things in the room, such as darker carpet, dark wood, dark walls.

Of course you can do that with a rug over the carpet in a lighter shade. Big matching lamps in a lighter color with lighter shades. I love how the insp room has the shades and the curtains. I would also use lighter colored bedding and lighter colored art mixed with darker of course.

I like your insp. light! If you keep going back to it then get it!

Good luck and keep us posted!!

Here's my end result. I found a light I love. I'm happy with the results. Thanks for all the great advice!

Oh, doesn't that look lovely! And doesn't crown molding do wonders?

I was just about to tell you that the chandelier in your inspiration photo is from Pottery Barn - so glad you chose something sparkly and pretty. The RH one is stylish, but thinking of it hanging in the middle of a bedroom kept putting me in mind of a hatbox...

I'm jealous of your bedroom. The whole thing is cozy and inviting. I'm partial to your chandy since I have one similar in the DR, but a tad bigger w'amber glass drops.

The checked bench really sets the room off. It looks navy and white in the picture.

Don't worry about not having a ceiling fan. I don't have one in the bedroom so I use a new vintage style table fan. Table & floor fans are the new "thing" in decorating. lol

The checked bench is black and tan. I used to have a lot of navy, but not anymore. The bench matches the drapes/pillow in the corner. Here's a picture of that corner. (the leaning mirror arrived broken, so the frame is sitting there while I decide whether to reorder or not.)
