white or stainless? - photoshop please!

Posted by colorblind1961 (My Page) on Wed, Jun 24, 09 at 13:42
My sister just purchased a home and this is a picture of her kitchen. It has been totally updated except for the appliances. My sister wants to get white appliances, but everyone she talks to says to go with stainless (including me). She likes the seamless look of all white and thinks stainless will break up the look. Can anyone photoshop stainless appliances into this picture so she can see what it would look like? Thanks so very much!

| I think your sister is right. :) The kitchen doesn't look that big and putting two ss appliances in the space above would make it very choppy, IMO. Plus, what is your sister's overall style? SS seems more modern to me, the kitchen has a country feel to it, which is one of my favorites! |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| Agree with Oakley. And she should most definitely go with what pleases her, not her friends and relatives. That just wouldn't make sense! Is there something actually wrong with the appliances that they need to be replaced? |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| I actually like the white in her kitchen. I have nothing against ss. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| Totally agree about the white. Like it as it is. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| The white's ok but I'm a stainless fan and think it would look good, especially to help tie in the counter. The white works fine though with the white sink. I know everyone says she should go with want she wants but it sounds like you're just trying to help her make a more informed decision and be sure of what she wants. I've never mastered the photoshop thing but I hope somebody can do it for you and your sister. I'm curious too. I think I'd prefer the stainless but would be fun to see. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| Ditto on the white. It's a small kitchen area and the white appliances keep everything flowing smoothly. If she wants some color, a cheery window treatment (what a lovely big window to look out while she's washing dishes!), a throw rug in front of the sink, and maybe her small countertop appliances in bright colors would do a lot to jazz things up without chopping up the cabinet runs. The only way I think she should get what YOU want instead of what SHE wants is if you're buying. LOL (Teasing!) What's wrong with the appliances other than that they're not brand new? If they work fine I'd leave them. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| The kitchen is too small to handle stainless. The all white is a much better look for this space. The stainless would chop it up. It's not worth even doing Photoshop. Just print it out in color and color in the appliances with light pencil or a silver crayon. You will quickly see what we are talking about. Plus stainless cost a lot more for the exact same model. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| I think SS would add some depth and more interest to the kitchen. Right now, it's boring and all the same tone. Too much of a good thing isn't always GOOD, IMO!!! |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| I can see her point, but the white appliances don't match the cabinets, so the appliances or the cabinets look a bit off in color. In real life, are the cabinets more creamy white and the appliance stark white? Stainless steel just gives any area a very upscale look in my humble opinion, so I don't think it would look choppy at all. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| I really wasn't paying much attention to the counter. The upscale stone is what seems out of place to me, with the cabs and flooring not having been updated. Have you thought of refacing in a light wood tone? The stainless might blend well with that and it would work well with the new counters. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| I think the white looks fine and if they work I don't see any reason to replace them. Stainless would look good, too, but it's really up to your sister. I do think new knobs would look better, maybe in a nickel finish. |

Thanks everyone so much for all your input. And thanks squirrel for the photoshop pic - it looks great! A few things I must mention: 1) This is a very inaccurate picture taken in low light. The cabinets are bright white - not creamy white. 2) The appliances are also white, but a bit faded as they are over 20 years old - the microwave and dishwasher do not work. 3) The granite is actually very grey not brown as it shows in the picture. 4) The kitchen is actually much larger than it appears - there is a whole wall of cabinets on the other side, opposite the sink. 5) the flooring is brand new Italian Marble Tile. I am asking my sister to take new pics in bright daylight, so I will re-post this in a few days. Thanks again everyone! |

RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!

| It sounds like the cabinets need a paint job if they are over 20 years old and the granite is actually grayish, why not suggest she paint the cabbies with a gray pastel white and install stainless steel. Floors can be done later. Throw a nice rug over them for now with some rose and black colors. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| Personally I have stainless, but I hate the maintenance. If I had a white kitchen, I would have done white appliances. I always think of Hoffman's kitchen on the FKB over on kitchens. It is a beautiful white kitchen with white appliances and it is just timeless and beautiful. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| Hmm I still favor the white but don't think the stainless looks bad. Did she ever have stainless before? I thought she meant the appliances are 20 years old..not the cabinets? |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| The other thing that will factor in is budget. You will be able to afford a slightly better appliance in white, since stainless is generally an upcharge. And I think either would be fine but if she wants white she may not like taking care of SS if she felt pressured into getting it. |

The high end products are usually in stainless steel. There is a minimal charge for stainless steel in the mediocre over white. If you are getting a $3500 stove, what is $10 for the difference in white or black or stainless.... let me go bang my head against the granite counter that I hate. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| Well, I get mediocre and it's a couple hundred bucks each for a fridge and range. Significant to me : ) |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| Palimpsest says: I didn't read anywhere in here that OP was purchasing high end appliances. The difference in pricing is 100-150. Times that by 3 (range ref and DW) and it could be the price of the microwave. OPs sister who owns the kitchen wants white. Palimpsest thinks: Patricia43 is partial to SS. Also thinks Patricia 43 does not like opinions that vary from hers. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| I just looked at Lowes appliances - GE 25.4 cubic feet side by side refrigerator, white $1498, stainless steel $1698. Also magnets will not stick to stainless steel if the owner likes to use magnets for notes, etc. If the owner likes SS that much more than white, then she will have to invest more money for the SS look. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| Wow Squirrel you are good - thanks sooooo much! Just a re-cap, the cabinets are brand new, the granite is brand new and the flooring is brand new. My sister loves the seamless look of white appliances and is not crazy about the maintenance of SS. Also, the entire house has been re-done top to bottom (except the appliances) and most of the finishes are gray, white and stainless. Again, the picture I posted does not do this kitchen justice - hopefully a new photo will arrive shortly and everyone can truly see the bigger picture. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| lol, so it goes! I was looking at that flooring last night, thinking hmm maybe that does look new! Maybe it's a combination of the lighting and older appliances! Maybe some jazzy, contemporary lighting would set things off, too. That small area of the kitchen would still look broken up with the stainless. But the more gray, as above, the less impact it has. Whoever has to keep it looking good : ) |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| I just went through this a few months ago in my own minuscule kitchen. Cabs are white, counter is brownish granite-look laminate and floor is red oak wood. When my white stove died, I really wanted to replace it with stainless with the intention of eventually changing out the white fridge as well. I was concerned with breaking up the flow with the stainless, but went ahead and got it. Wrong move. I love the stainless on it's own, but it really disrupts the flow of the space to the point where the stove really stands out. Now I hesitate to replace the fridge. If I had it to do over, I would have gotten white again. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| Here's a better picture - this might change some minds about the SS.
|
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| Ok, that is a better picture. If she wants the stainless it will look fine. I would buy a counter depth frig though, which does cost more. The standard depth frig in stainless will really stick out. But I think the white is still the best. |

| Wow! what a better view! I was 50-50 on white vs stainless before, but now I am leaning toward white because of the outside. I would leave the emphasis on the windows and outside by keeping it white on white. I agree about checking out a counterdepth fridge regardless of finish. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| Here's the stainless, with the suggestion of a frig, both full and counter depth. btw, there are some very sleek and contemporary white enamel with stainless trim appliances out. Don't know the price points. So true, regarding Pal's point on the view.

| I like the white appliances.....and after all, it is HER house and if she likes white, why try to change her mind?...and if she doesn't like it, then she has you to blame because you talked her into it. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| White appliances, by all means. If she's doing a separate oven and cooktop, the cooktop could be stainless. |

RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!

| On Lowes web site - GE 22.7 cubic feet side by side counter depth stainless refrigerator is $2198 compared to the 25.4 cubic feet side by side stainless regular depth at $1698. And if you get the GE Profile at 23 or 24 cubic fee side by side stainless you pay $2898 to $3848. And Lowes has some of the best prices on appliances |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!

| I hate stainless and I think the kitchen looks very pretty in the picture you posted. If she must change (why change?), then I vote white. |

| This will probably go over like a lead balloon, but I'd like to see the ceiling lightened. Maybe highlight the architecture in some way. It would probably lighten the area more too. And some white lens covers for the lights.

| I haven't gone through all the messages but I did read several about the maintenance of Stainless Steel. I have all stainless and except for the occasional wiping of smudges, there is little to no maintenance. I've had them for over a year in this home and for two years in a previous home. However, your sister should go with what she wants rather than live with something she bought because it happens to be very current. I think the stainless looks great with the updated counters and I'd also add something a bit more substantial in hardware in either pewter or black to add some punch to the cabinets. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| No, Palimpsest, Patricia does not like stainless steel. If you had been here more than a few days, you would know better than to speak and leap before you read and heed. Patricia also does not like granite but then I digress and give you back your tiny throne for your large ego. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!

| They did come out with a smudge resistant stainless finish a 'few' years ago. |

| Just had to show my previous kitchen again. At the time of build, stainless was just coming into fashion, but white and black appliances were also still "in". Because of fear of having the same "chopped up" appearance in my kitchen, I decided to go with the white and glad that I made that choice. I have the stainless steel in my new kitchen (with cherry cabinets) and while I like the look, they are a pain to keep. Can you guess how I am voted? :) My opinion is that if your sister plans to remain in the house for 5-10 years, she should go with what she likes. If this is a "turn-around" house, go with stainless for resale.
One thing to keep in mind with white appliances, there will always be a touch of black or gray on the appliances, so the look may still be chopped up. Since the counters are gray, I would look for brands with gray accents, instead of black. Ours were Sears Kenmore and to date, Kenmore has been the best, maintenance free appliance we have ever had. Our current GE Profile have been nothing but trouble. One more thing...I'd ditch the white sheers and add a little color to that window, or leave it blank. ;) |

| Oh, sorry Patricia, I was just answering your post in kind.Re: My comment about SS appliances being so stupid that you had to bang your head on the counter. Anyway, I was just trying to contribute to the process of the decision making. Stainless or white. Meanwhile, you repainted her cabinets, tore up the floor down the road, and chose textiles for her. Who has the bigger ego? |

| Stainless or white. Meanwhile, you repainted her cabinets, tore up the floor down the road, and chose textiles for her. Who has the bigger ego? Come on. Initially the OP said the kitchen was 20 years old and, with the lighting and poor photo, we thought the cabs and flooring were also old. Contributing ideas or observations on a decorating forum is a natural and creative outcome. The forum has worked like that for the two years I've been around. I wish people would stop trying to censor and control the constructive or creative responses of others. We all come from different places. It makes for a negative and oppressive environment. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| I happen to agree, Squirrel but P43 felt the need to respond to one of my posts in a very snide fashion, possibly because I wasnt agreeing with her, or so she thought. And apparently I have a huge ego for not just sitting back without responding. I think things would be a lot more constructive if people responded to the post itself (and, generally the question at hand)and didnt bicker with other responses. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| Personally, I think either would work. It's your sister's choice. I have a white kitchen with stainless appliances, but white would be a lot easier to keep smudge and drip-free. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| Again - Squirrel, you are a magician with photoshop - thank you isn't enough for your input...and thanks to all for your input. I truly rely on this forum for so many ideas and my sister will now have a vehicle to see her vision through. I'll keep you all posted on what she picks - the decision should be coming today. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| I actually like both the white and the stainless steel appliances as long as the white has a modern look. Thanks Squirrel for your talented Photoshopping as usual. |

RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!

| I prefer the seamless look that white would give her; plus it was what she initially wanted. And the stainless appliances would look off with the white sink. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| Or she could go with black appliances! :) |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!

| Hi...Regarding the appliances, I think in this case white is definitely the way to go. What strikes me with this kitchen is a lack of interest/focal point and texture. Everything is glossy or shiny. If me? It's ALL about that window! It's a gorgeous patio/view and she's got this plain jane, outdated metal sash. I'd paint that window frame black, beef up the casing, order mullions and paint black, add a hefty rod in wrought iron to match the other...which would play off the delicate curtains well. That said, the other drape in the photo isn't the best complement to the drapes in the kitchen but that's not a biggie. The rug in there bothers me...it's too formal, too strong a statement with just all white in there...my eyes go right to the rug. I can see that your sister leans to the formal but I'd stay more "in the middle" here since the kitchen is not. I'd buy a seagrass rug with black border for a more neutral look but the TEXTURE would be the big thing. (seagrass, not sisal...seagrass is TOUGH...Scotchguard for added protection or perhaps find a quality outdoor one) I'd add a basket in the corner with a flowering plant, another by the DW...I'm trying to bridge to that patio...leading the eye outside. Replace the ceramic knobs with more substantial black/bronze knobs, perhaps even a black composite sink down the road (or not lol?) would give more weight/interest too. Not photoshop but my rendering... |

RE:2 white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| Oh, the other thing that I was after was getting a nice flow between the kitchen and patio area which in this case is like an adjacent family room. Just as you would try and keep a flow with an interior room, I'd do it here...hence the organic textures, plants. It also takes the "cold" out of this kitchen which the white and glossy surfaces create. |
RE: white or stainless? - photoshop please!
| | |
| Actually, my sister just closed on the house last week, so all the decor you see is from the previous owner - rugs, window treatments, furniture...everything. My sister hired an interior designer and is working with her as we speak. When she is done (30 days or so before she moves in), this house will definitely have my sisters imprint on it. |
