Can someone steer me in the right direction? Fireplace tile.

I have an antique fireplace mantel from the 1870's. I was told it is a Romanesque revival Victorian mantel - quite ornate. I am using in a new build. I'd like to use "appropriate tile" for the surround. I have looked on e-bay but many of the tiles are in poor shape. This mantel might not have even had tile around it when it was in use, but with our insert we do need them. I definitely don't want to compete with this mantel so I am thinking something pretty plain. I just don't want it to look totally out of place. This the the mantel, we did have it cleaned up by a professional restorer and it looks really beautiful.
