Decorating with mirrors

Posted by scoobyruby (My Page) on

I would love to see how you have used mirrors in your own homes. Please share pics if you have any:)

I have ordered one from Ballard Designs & trying to make a decision about where to put it.

Did you consider what the mirror reflects?

Possibly thinking about putting it here....bottles to be filled with wine corks.

Smiles:)

RE: Decorating with mirrors

Hey scooby. :)

Timely question as I am on the hunt for a mirror to go over my new server (to be delivered on Thursday). It will be in the niche in my DR, across from a window. I like a mirror that reflects light and/or something pretty, not an awkward view of something best left not doubled, IYKWIM.

Glad you bought the armoire and it's serving your needs. Very pretty, too!

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

Here's mine I wanted them to relect light also unfortunatley all that is reflected in this pic. is the flash from my camera LOL! DH hung them too high that is on my honeydo list today to lower them a little. I think your mirror will look great over your server! I love Ballards my mirrors are from there also.

RE: Decorating with mirrors

Here's a photo of our den, using one piece of the Ballard mirror you are considering. It's very heavy, but very satisfactory. I bought it to balance an exterior French door on the other side of a chimney breast in my previous house, and I put it here because the view from those two wonderful windows is the unattractive wall of the house next door.

Den/Library3

I use mirrors all over the place. I use them over sinks and dressers and in the closet, of course. But I also use them to open featureless walls, to reflect light, to add warmth, gleam, and sparkle to a room, to fill a space where I want something other than a framed image, to reflect things, to create illusions (widening a window or doubling a space), and to fill a particularly lovely frame for which I don't have a picture.

The only thing I don't do with them is put them on the ceiling. The seventies are over, and I'm not that cute any more...

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

scooby, love the mirror you chose and I think it is perfect for over the server. The room is really coming along!
PS: I spy corks in a zip lock waiting to be used!

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

I LOVE using mirrors! I honestly don't think about what is being reflected before I put them up.

Here's what I did with some inexpensive IKEA mirrors and paint:

RE: Decorating with mirrors

I love the Ballard mirrors, and really all mirrors, especially the one with divisions in them that make them look like windows.

Ruby, I think that mirror will look great over your server. You've got a great theme going on there with the wine storage, serving tray, and wine themed lamps. I think the squares in the mirror are a nice counterpoint to the curves in the chandy.

Hope I'm not hijacking this thread, but on the subject of mirrors.... Do you think one is the limit for a room unless they are in a grouping like the ones posted here?

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

That Ballard mirror is going to be wonderful between the lamps!!!! Gorgeous! ((love the snoozing puppy))

Jan (loves mirrors as much as I love lamps)

RE: Decorating with mirrors

Hey Parma:) I can't wait to see your server in your pretty DR!! I had moved a mirror into the entry hall to my MB & just didn't like it there.....didn't like seeing my reflection so often!! LOL

Marybeth, yours turned out great....I remember your post - 3 is perfecto - love em'!

Bronwyn, how nice to be able to see the very mirror in use. Your room is beautiful and so classic - what my house aspires to be someday. Oh gosh, even when I was cute I sure didn't want those action shots in the reflection from a ceiling mirror - luckily I was too young in the 70's for that kind of action :)

Thanks, Kmcg!! I saw your post about your basement remodel.....I'll be back about some thoughts - everything looks sooooo nice:)

Jeannie - what a beautiful space you have. I really like the vibe you have going on - traditional with alot of glam!! Your mirrors are gorgeous:)

Terriks - your mirrors are so cool & how neat that you repeated the square design in the pillows.

Artlover - I am not sure of the design 'etiquette' about more than one mirror.....the little arch on this BD mirror might go in my bathroom so that would be 2 mirrors in there - reflecting each other - maybe others will weight in.......Yeah, we kinda enjoy wine & entertaining a good bit:)

Sweetie pie Teacats, I always appreciate your opinion - thanks so much.

I hope since it is broken up like a window the reflection will be kinda broken up also. I have always placed a mirror when there is a window around for the reflection.

I appreciate your thoughts and pictures. Keep the pics coming.....I sometimes think mirrors are easier (and cheaper) than art to use when filling a big space.

Smiles:)

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

The only place I used mirrors is in my breakfast room, it needed something and not having a real window we made this fake window with mirror tiles, it's a bit whimsical, but we still enjoy it every day..the cord running up the left side is for a light hidden under the valance.

Scoobyruby - "I hope since it is broken up like a window the reflection will be kinda broken up also. I have always placed a mirror when there is a window around for the reflection."

You are right about the squares breaking up the reflection. I tried to make my own version and while I like the way it breaks up the reflection, mine doesn't look as elegant as the Ballard mirror and I plan to replace it.

Susieq - your mirror is really cute. It looks a lot more like a window than the one I made.

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

Scooby - I love that new mirror and think it will look great above the server!

I only have the one in the foyer which everyone on here has seen 1,000 times.

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

I love mirrors...the more, the merrier!
Have at least one in every room.

Your new mirror will be perfect there-
enjoy~

RE: Decorating with mirrors

So many pretty rooms! Scoobyruby, I think you've got a perfect plan for your bar...I'd use the pair for a big expanse there.

About more than one...sure, you can use more than one if that's what works in the room. Loribee has shown that clearly.

If you hang mirrors opposite each other, it's usually fine so long as they are part of a composition, and the image, as several of you noted, is broken up. What you want to avoid is the endless-hallway-in-the-funhouse effect, which happens when big mirrors are set opposite each other, so that they replicate the reflection to infinity. That just looks weird.

And thank you for your nice comments..I think you are already there.

I love what Marybeth1, Jeanninepc99, and Susieq07 have done to create windows in the walls; and Terriks, that's a fine creative use. Loribee, your house is luscious...a great example of what discipline, restraint, and focused editing can do.

One note about the Ballard mirror that started the thread...the grid pattern is a one-piece overlay on a single mirror, rather than integrated muntins with separate panes, if that makes any difference to you. I didn't expect that, but it looks just fine.

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

I love mirrors! I even have an old antique mirror on top (leaning against wall) my china cabinet. Couldn't find anywhere to put it an decided that might make a nice setting with some crystal decanters and a transferware platter. I'm glad you agree about using more than one in a room Bronwynsmom, as I'm thinking of putting a mirror above a small chest in that same room.

Loribee - your home is beautiful - I love your colors, so very soothing!

I LOVE those big round mirrors but don't have one anywhere in our home. Hmmmm maybe I should change out the mirror over the mantle . . .

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

PBI Scooby where did you get those lamps?

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

Major Hijack Alert! Sorry in advance. Loribee, can you tell us what the beautiful color is on your walls? Speaking of Ballards, I ordered a media center from them and it was delivered last week...sorta. Hubby refused the delivery. The carton was beat to heck and back. This is really the first time I can recall that I have ordered a large piece of furniture. I'm set for another one to be delivered, but wondered if anyone has had good delivery experience with Ballard's as far as furniture goes? I will say that I ordered several other small items from Ballards and they all came in just fine. I want my media center! Waaaaaaaaa!

Scoobyruby, sending you good mirror placement karma.

pup

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

another hijack, sorry: JeanninePC99, where did you get your mirrors? they're just gorgeous.

And Bronwynsmom, lol on the ceilings!

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

Scooby, the mirror you picked out is just lovely and I think you've got the perfect place for it. Please give us pics when it's there.

I have a mirror similar to the one hanging over Loribee's mantel. Mine was a wedding gift to my folks from my aunt. I had it over my FP but my FP is elevated, so nobody could look into the mirror and it looked stupid up there. So it's in the DR just hung on the wall. Loribee, yours looks so pretty and I love your FP! I hate my FP.

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

Oceanna, my FP is an old $400 oak, electric FP that I painted white when we moved to our new home, LOL!
My friend Jan kindly gave me the mirror above it and we all really love it. :)

Thanks pupwhipped, the wall color is BM standish white.

Thanks for the compliments bronwynsmom & tina, very kind of you!

RE: Decorating with mirrors

I love to use antique and vintage mirrors in my house. I just added to the 'wardrobe' of them that I have for over the mantle, with this one from CL. Pics are from the seller's ad; I get it tomorrow. It's 24" x 36" and solid brass. The seller says it weighs 30 lbs!

Photobucket

Photobucket

I know that some don't like brass, but I consider it classic. I always research what I buy, if at all possible, and got a huge bargain here. This mirror is made by Decorative Crafts, Inc, and they import hand made furniture and accessories. This one is 20+ years old, and their mirrors today sell for between $1350 and $5000+. See them at the link below.

I also have this Ogee mirror that I paid approx $14 for from eBay. I added the gold touches with Rub N Buff.

Photobucket

And this one from CL for $30. A three mirror 'mantle wardrobe' for under $100!

Photobucket

Can't forget this beauty from eBay - hand carved gilded wood sunburst.

And this from eBay - hand painted. Along with many more!!!

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

I love this thread. I've really enjoyed seeing how everyone uses mirrors.

Newhomebuilder, you have exquisite taste. All of your rooms are beautiful.

My3dogs not only do I need you as my personal shopper, can you come to my house and tell me where to hang it and what to put with it? Seriously, I don't know what your profession is, but you really could be a decorator. I'd hire you.

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

artlover, You are so kind! My real job is being an analyst for a large PBM (Pharmacy Benefit Manager). I work with IT staff, other PBMs, and create procedures and solve problems. Very dry, but challenging and interesting work, with people from coast to coast.

I have always been artistic, and love to paint, sew, re-finish furniture and garden. So decorating is just a natural part of that to me, although I don't profess to have a clue as to what I am doing. I just do what I like, and in many cases, it's probably very 'wrong'. I should reply to the post about using multiple patterns in a room, because boy, do I!

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

Here are a couple design ideas I ended up getting some very pretty mirrors from burkedecor.com. The one in the kitchen is my favorite its a white modern style, it really fits in with my kitchen set, and counter top.

The mirror below in my house is in my bathroom that I am redesigning with a bunch of new modern bathroom decor. Its a great piece since the bathroom mirror is used and noticed every day.

Very nice everyone!

My3dogs - HOOWW do you score so many pretty mirrors for such great prices! All the ones I ever see on ebay are really are expensive! You have a gift!

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

I just love this thread. My#dogs you have unerring taste and lovely luck. Loribee I love your homw. NHB you have used mirrors perfectly...terriks, jennine ( I love that DR !!) bronwynsmom...you have put it beautifully as to how to use a mirror...susie I never would have guessed that wasn't a window....marybeth....hope I didn't forget anyone...all of the pics are giving me great ideas. I have a couple mirrors that need to be hung. Back soon for suggestions. c

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

You guys will not believe this. The man selling the mirror met me near my house today to get it to me, as I was having a wild work day. Not only did I get a great mirror at a wonderful price. but he gave me a gift!

He handed me this huge box, that he had never opened. His late wife bought these hand hammered copper trays, and she died, before she even opened them. That was 5 years ago, and he has lugged them from San Diego to Maine, and now he is moving back to CA again. He said that he just can't use them and is getting rid of as much as he can.

They are a set of 2, and they are very heavy. The small one below is 13x13, and the large one is 28x14! That is one big tray! I have no idea what I will do with them, but he wanted me to have them, for 'helping' him by buying the mirror. I could have cried....

Photobucket

And the mirror is SO heavy that it's going to take some real hefting to get it up above the mantle. I need to plan what I'm going to put with it before I get it up there. It already looks more at home, just being near the mantle!

Photobucket

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

I love some of the ideas I have seen here! There is some great inspiration there. I do have a few mirrors around my home, but the one I am most proud of is the one I made myself from some seashells I collected at the beach. It's very rustic, but because of it it has lots of character.

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

Nice choice of mirror. Based on the location you propose, I would be concerned about the vertical placement/overall height. As for the mirror reflection, I would definitely consider it an important factor in maximizing the impact and role of the mirror (e.g., to reflect a painting that one would not otherwise see from a particular standpoint; or to assist in directing/increasing the level of natural light within the home.)

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

3dogs...such a nice story! :)

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

My3Dogs - What a story! Those trays are beautiful, and in like new conditional. Are they old?

I have an antique hammered copper tray w/ tea set that belonged to my grandmother. The finish needs to be restored as it is very dull looking and the kettle is slightly pitted.

Love the mirror, BTW.

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

Wonderful story M3D...and the trays are beautiful. c

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

petraw, I love your sea shell mirror! What a great idea. I would love to try that in my bathroom.

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

Yes, mirrors over the stove! I mirrored the entire wall behind the stove in our previous house. It was a deadly bore without it...opened the space right up, and it's also the easiest thing in the world to clean.
The camera flash made the rather startling white bit to the right, and also made the cabinets look whiter than they were. They were actually a nice biscuity ivory.

Mirror as backsplash

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

Wasn't that sweet of him? I still can't believe it. No, they are not old, and there is no tarnish to the finish on the trays. They've never been used. They are very well made, and just imagine a tray 28" long. At the moment, all I can picture doing with that one is putting it on the dining room table in the fall and winter and filling it with seasonal decor. Pumpkins, gourds, bittersweet, in the fall, and greens, etc for the holidays. I may come up with something else when I give them more thought.

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

I am so glad I asked about this.... I had it in my head that a mirror should go directly across from a window.

Everyone's mirrors look sooooo nice in your homes - I love that you all shared!!

I got my mirrors - Bronwyn, you are right, these jokers are heavy!! I didn't realize that by placing this mirror adjacent to a window made it seem like there would be another window there - an added bonus!

I placed the arch above my tub in the MB so I do have 2 mirrors in there now - and it works, too. I have a nice shot of my tushie when I get out of the tub but that keeps me motivated to keep doing my squats up the driveway after my walk:)

Xoxo, I made the lamps. I wanted antique demijohns but couldn't find 2 that were the same size that were in my price range ( they are expensive) so I found the vessels at Tj max & lamp shades at Tarjay.

Smiles:)

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

Scooby, that looks fabulous! You must be delighted.

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

My3dogs, you are one lucky, lucky lady to have been given such a delightful "gift" from your mirror man! Those hammered trays are to die for! You might consider finding an appropriate metal base for the 14" x 28" tray and using it as a side table. Hammered copper is one of my favorite metal finishes and a score like that turns my patina green with envy.

I can't wait to see the mirror above your mantle with accessories in place, I'm sure it will be striking!

Everyone's use of mirrors in their homes is lovely and has made me reconsider the placement of many of mine to take better advantage of what they reflect - thanks to all for some great ideas!

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

I was thinking the same thing about making a table out of the larger tray. My mother has a large antique brass tray that sits on a teak wood base. It belonged to my grandmother. I also like the idea of filling the tray with fall decor!

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

My3dogs, that was very sweet of him to give you the trays!!

I have the same trays....bought them at Costco some years ago - love them. I use them for serving ALL the time - the clear coat has come off of my big one & has a great patina going on. We entertain a good bit.....so DH will do a big beef tenderloin - then I will add double stuffed potatoes & grilled asparagus or such right to the platter. All the food looks so pretty on the platter & I put it in the center of the table & everyone can serve themselves. Easy clean-up, too.

Smiles:)

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

Scooby - My trays will NEVER have something that sounds THAT good on them! Yummy!

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

My3dogs, you have incredible taste and incredible luck! The hammered copper trays are frosting on the cake, and that man was so sweet to give them to you. Your mantel decor is exquisite. I especially like the second picture, it's perfection. I also love the mirror in your last pic, the round one with the painted flowers. I've looked at mirrors on eBay and they've all been too expensive, and the shipping is too, as they're so heavy. Fact is I think I could paint that round mirror, and it could be done on plywood... but what do you think the rims made from? I went to your link, promptly fell in love with a mirror, then looked at the price -- yikes!

Scooby, your new mirrors look so nice there, and you're right, it's like having another lovely window with all that green outside. You did great!

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

>the clear coat has come off of my big one & has a great patina going on. We entertain a good bit.....so DH will do a big beef tenderloin - then I will add double stuffed potatoes & grilled asparagus or such right to the platter. All the food looks so pretty on the platter

Golly, scoobyruby. You do know that lovely verdigris patina is toxic?

> verdigris: a green or greenish-blue poisonous pigment resulting from the action of acetic acid on copper and consisting of one or more basic copper acetates b: normal copper acetate Cu(C2H3O2)2·H2O

There's a reason copper pots and pans are always lined with another metal.

From answers.com:

>Never buy unlined copper pans, which can produce potentially toxic reactions with acidic ingredients like wine, lemon juice and tomatoes.

 o
unless

There are some hammered aluminum/copper alloy dishes and such that are inert, but they don't tarnish/patina.

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

RE: Decorating with mirrors

Love the look of your new mirrors!

Jeannine, where'd you get your cool chandelier?

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

Writersblock, it is not verdigris on them - just that the clear coat is off - I think we are okay. It is like our copper sink - it has no clear seal on it - and we let it do it's thing and will wash it with a sponge and soapy water. But thank you for warning me -

I am glad you all like the mirrors.

Smiles:)

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

Beautiful ideas with mirrors old and new. I love where you put your new one with the lamps, Scooby.

I love mirrors. I have several new ones purchased from Pier 1, TJMaxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, etc. I have a number of vintage, mostly found at garage and estate sales. Shipping is usually expensive on a mirror, so I just look locally. And if you find one, you need to buy it without worrying about the eventual location. Most every mirror can find a home, you just may need to move something else. And keep your mind open to finishes. If it's silver and you don't like silver, but the frame is lovely, then just get some Sophisticated Finishes or Rub n' buff or craft paint, and put the finish on that you want. Be careful, too, when hanging one. You really need a cutout of the mirror to tape on the wall first, that way, you don't have to redrill holes and put in anchors.

RE: Decorating with mirrors

I missed the final product!

Scooby - I really like the mirror there. Very pretty.

My3dogs - Great story and love your new mirror and copper trays.

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

I bought these mirrors from an artist in Santa Fe who did all the punched tin throughout our home. I had them insert woven fabric from Chimayo, NM, weavers in this one for our powder room.
Photobucket

For the twin mirrors for our master bath, I found some tapestry fabric that I had them insert. All the fabric inserts are under glass, BTW.
Photobucket
This stained glass framed mirror was made for us by my cousin who's a stained glass artist. I hung it here in our family room to reflect light from the window wall opposite it.

I once had this "great" idea to hang a collage of old mirrors where this painting is now in our MBR. I quickly realized that I did NOT like waking up to 20 reflections of me and my bedhead in the mornings! I'm now much happier waking to this lovely Santa Fe view.

RE: Decorating with mirrors

Great ideas here! I'm a huge fan of utilizing mirrors to bounce light in low light rooms, bring the outdoors in, and make a room feel bigger.

Be careful, too, when hanging one. You really need a cutout of the mirror to tape on the wall first, that way, you don't have to redrill holes and put in anchors.

To expand on what Red said, I have a very large and heavy mirror hanging on 3 OOK triple hangers spaced evenly behind the mirror. No anchors needed. Love the OOK hangers, they can hold a lot of weight with minimal holes in the wall. I put clear bumpers on the bottom rear of the mirror frame so it hangs straight, not at a tilt. Saves wear on the paint that way, too.

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

OMG! The mirrors you posted from BD are actually the ones that I'm thinking of getting for my dining area. I love them, and mirrors in general. The ones you ended up getting look great in their new home!

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

Scooby, I love the mirror there, especially with those pretty lamps. How lovely it all looks...

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

Thanks, again.
Lynn, your mirrors are so unique and beautiful. I can relate to the bedroom mirrors, too!! I once had a mirror where I could see myself in bed - bed head & a face with sheet wrinkles is NOT what I want to see first thing in my am!!

Natureperson, I bought these on a whim b/c they sent me a email about them being on sale- instead of of the set being $499 my total before shipping was around 300 - I also used a 15% coupon. Here is one for you to use on an order over $200 or more CJ9TY152 . Maybe if you call & speak to someone & say you were about to order the mirror when it was on sale & life happened - would they still honor the sales price?

Also, for anyone else interested in ordering from Ballard - I signed up with them on their website - placed items in the cart - life really did happen & couldn't complete the order so they sent me via email a 15% off coupon for my next order!! Recession shopping!!

Smiles:)

RE: Decorating with mirrors

These are phenomenal -- I'm so glad bronwynsmom happened to mention this thread.

Newhomebuilder, your before/after butler's pantry pics should be in a textbook. Amazing, clear difference caused by one element. Almost like a lab experiment.

All of these are so beautiful. Does anyone have convex mirrors? (Did I miss one being posted? I checked all the round mirrors but maybe it wasn't clear) They're my personal favorite for decorative mirrors.

 o
RE: Decorating with mirrors

SR -- Way way gorgeous!! Looks marvellous with the new mirrors -- lots of light!
