Transitioning trim paint color

Hi, all....I have a 1950 house with a closed floor plan. I painted the trim in my kitchen a light cream although it looks like pale taupe under fluorescent lighting. The trim in my living room is very white. If I follow the rules I've read about what color the door between the rooms should be, it would be white on the living room side. But, that door stays open 95% of the time. I don't like it white, but it looks funky painted taupe. And then there's the problem of the door frame color....half white, half taupe. Ugh.

My kitchen appliances are white. My ceiling is white. The crown molding is an extension of the maple cabinets. The knotty pine paneling you see in the photo is a light lime green. It doesn't really look good with the pale taupe, but I don't know why.

I didn't really want white trim in the kitchen, but maybe it should be at least off-white. I'm paralyzed. Can someone give me a clue???
