What goes with tangerine?

louislinus

I found a great deal on these panels but am not sure what color to pain the walls. I would use these as drapes for the dining room. I don't know if I'm brave enough to do a matching tangerine wall although I love that look. My original plan was to paint the room emerald green. Other ideas are cobalt blue walls or dark grey. I think the grey would probably look best but I am just so sick of grey walls and wanted something more unexpected for this room.

Well, opposite it on the color wheel would be blue. I don't know, looking at the panel, I'm thinking the right light green would look lovely with them. Along the blue line, perhaps pale turquoise.
    Pretty panels!

I was going to suggest a deep blue or cobalt blue. Emerald green would look beautiful as well, but might be a tad harsh for a dining room?

Look at it, in two windows, next to Benjamin Moore's Champion Cobalt. I just did. It's gorgeous.

I'm so rarely a fan of accent walls that I can hardly believe what I am thinking but IMO a tangerine accent wall would be wonderful if it is a perfect match for the panels.

I would not use a strong color on the rest of the walls so grey or white would be preferable.

I would recommend using a similar color as accents throughout the room.

What color is your DR furniture as that might be relevant?

Try SW Patience and use blue willow/blue onion/blue danube/royal blue/delft blue accoutrements for decor.

Sorry, I do not remember the code for posting color, so here goes.... this is an orange white color

In addition to the blues and turquoise mentioned, maybe a gray.

A vote for fresh white walls OR deep rich navy .....

Or a more subtle navy, BM Washington Blue.

If you scroll down in the link below, about midway, you'll see a turquoise bedroom wall, with curtains similar in color to yours. That struck me as the nicest combo, and I preferred it over the deep blue just above it.

Do you have china or a rug that you'll need to coordinate, or are you starting fresh? Do you have any photos of your current dining room with any pieces you'll be using?

    A striking green -- maybe in semi-gloss?

And -- of course -- black -- painted in satin or semi-gloss ....... with lots of silver around the whole dining room .....

The problem with tangerine and turquoise is that it's very Florida and Howard Johnson's.

  • awm03

Perhaps a sunny yellow, a pink or coral, a citrus green, and cobalt accents? White/light gray woods...

Using amw03 pictured/cobalt accents, the tangerine draperies, what about putnam ivory? IMHO, a better effect is to use bold sparingly. The tangerine drapes and blue accents will give you enough bold and you can soften it with putnam ivory. I know it is not what you had in mind, and bending minds is often like bending steel but give it a try before diving into the jeweltones and tangerine all at once.

I'd go with either grey or cream walls. Or navy if I wanted a bold room.

a very, very light gray with blue undertones for the walls. then use bright blues, oranges, cream for accessories, from plates, to pillows to table linens to rugs.

DD2 used orange, a custom turquoise blue, yellow, pink, cream, grey and brown, with a touch of purple. Lots of photos in the link if you're interested. She carried some of these colors into the MBath.

I pinned this just last night:

Tangerine would fit in with these also:

Turquoise! Or a deeper teal/turquoise. I have always loved that combo. I saw this Decorator Showcase house in San Francisco in 2005 and fell in love.

I would do a matching tangerine wall, or a little lighter. You said you love the look. I do, too. Can we see the DR?

    Those are really, really beautiful.

You can use the blues in your accents in the DR.

This is a photo from the listing. It is a great house but in desperate need of a facelift. My DR furniture is MCM. I have a china hutch that was my grandmas and is walnut. It is in great shape and I love it. My table and chairs however are trashed. They are sturdy but beat up. I was planning on painting the table glossy black and doing a mismatched chair thing painted glossy black with matching upholstered seats - not sure on fabric for those. I like that bling chandelier knock of and was going to make the metal parts matte gold with rub n buff. The rug is a light cream with a lot of sheen and a bit of gold.

    Would love your opinions.

Light carpet with gold in it; white ceiling? Tangerine curtain panels. In a dining room.

I'd definitely go with a navy or cobalt blue.

Good for you! Love crown moulding and think it's criminal that houses now are built w/o it!

I remember your house now from another thread. So pretty. Colonial.

Do you think the furniture colors and rug will work? I'm a little worried about the black table and chairs and walnut hutch.

The rest of the house has been much easier to plan. For some reason this room had been tough for me to nail down.

My bedroom right now is SW Rainwashed and we both love that color. It's very light and sort of the opposite of what I had initially planned. However I want the drapes to be the centerpiece. These drapes are $100/panel for the fabric and then my friend is making them into drapes for me. Almost everything I own is a garage sale or thrift store find so drapes like this are a real splurge for me. But I just turned 40 and decided I could and should have grown up drapes finally. :)

I did my powder room in orange...inspired by the art...

The flooring is a grayed navy tile, similar to the guest towel in the pic, and the ceiling was done in BM soft fern.

People either love it or say nothing...which I take that they think is crazy...which it is. I call it my wild a$$ powder room.

That is a good orange! I am scared of painting with orange because I also did my powder room orange a few houses ago and it was horrible. Yours is much nicer.

After seeing the front of the house and interior photos I would go with grey walls, maybe even grasscloth? LOVE the panels. I'd also have some wainscoting installed and paint it white; the same as your corner cabinet. Add a vintage crystal chandelier and you'll have a stunning room. Furnishings can evolve as your budget allows; for now I would slipcover your chairs and let the China Cabinet be the focus since you love it. Can't wait to see your lovely home take shape :)

The wainscoting is a great idea! And would really help with that little built in. I got those panels for $100 each! They are normally $370. There is an interior designer who sells leftover fabrics from jobs on her blog.

Turquoise would be bold, Ivory would be safe, but Gray would be stunning! Looooove the paper!

So which gray? A darker charcoal?

  • nosoccermom

You probably have seen these pictures, but here are some with the fabric.

Do you already have the panels because here the grey looks more greige or a warm grey?

Maybe thi ski ndof grey (although different color panels).

Or the darker grey from the carpet.

What other colors (floors, furniture) do you have in the room?

  • elleninmaine

please post pix of your wire terrier so we can see if he/she goes with the tangerine panels.....

  • jjam

I guess it would have to depend on a lot of things; orientation of the room, natural light, furnishings, and color schemes in adjoining rooms. I'd try for a warm gray since it's a DR. A cool tone is not ideal for a DR in my opinion. I'd go for an earthy gray; not brown, but not a blue gray either; like the color of the carpet in nosoccermom's post. In seeing photos of your panels I'm just speechless at how gorgeous they are.

I like the second picture in nosoccermon's post, the
light yellow/cream. I think it would allow the drapes and what you do with the table/chairs to stand out.
