Mixing metals in house.... any rules?

Posted by christyinco (My Page) on

We are remodeling our kitchen and have chosen brushed nickel for the kitchen/desk pulls. We also have stainless steel appliances and faucet. I'm debating a dark bronze finish for a light above the kitchen table (this all is open to the living room as well). Do I need to stick with the brushed nickel or can I go with a dark bronze (not oil-rubbed)?

Well, ask yourself this...would you wear a gold necklace with a bold silver bracelet, probably not.

Would you wear that same necklace with a big bold silver/gold bracelet? Yes, you probably would, I have.

This sounds like a fortune cookie message, huh?

I usually stick with one metal in a room, but since you have used two already, I would not add a third.

Can you post pictures?

It depends on the room(s). My kitchen has Hickory cabinets with dark pulls yet my faucet and appliances are SS. The light over the kitchen table and cook area are brushed nickel. For my kitchen all SS just wouldn't look right.

Have to disagree with newdawn [sorry :( ] but I wouldn't consider the brushed nickle and SS two separate colors. IMO you're adding a second color not a third.

I say mix it all up! Your choices are not jewelry to accent an outfit, it is a space you will live in. Enjoy it!!

I had 2 copper bar sinks installed in a buffet for the bathroom. The faucets are chrome and I love it! As long as you like a more casual look why not?

I think mixing is fine, but it has to be done thoughtfully so you have the right mix not a mish-mash mix. Candice Olson mixes metal finishes all the time. Do you like her style? Great rooms mix furniture finishes all the time too. Our master bathroom has chrome faucets and brushed silver lights (here when we moved in), and it looks terrible. The faucets are ultra-mod and the lights are transitional; it's a mish-mash mix. I think you said your cabinets are cherry, right? I would think the bronze dining light could relate to the cabinets. Then find a way to bring the look or feel of stainless/silver into the dining area for flow.

I agree that you've only done one, as well, and that it would actually be better to mix it up a little bit. (Of course, this is coming from someone who used antique brass and ORB hardware and lighting, and stainless faucets and appliances.)
