| I'm looking for ideas, pictures, links, etc. for 1920s and 1930s vintage cottage style. I particularly like the softer shades of turquoise, green, yellow, cream, periwinkle, pink and lavender.
During the 1920s and into the 1930s there was a popular style, often referred to as folklore, fairy tale and storybook. This was often a combination of english cottage and french provincial styles (according to some articles I've been reading).
Here are some pictures I've found, but I would love to know if anyone has other ideas. I'm especially interested in kitchens, with the vintage colors of creamy whites, soft turquoise/blues and light jadite greens.
So, any ideas to bring all this together? English cottage, french provincial and vintage cottage style? I like painted furniture, but I also like wood (or vinyl that looks like wood) floors, butcher block, a little marble, banquettes, a bit of a french touch, in the furniture style and a little wrought iron and just a bit of whimsy. Thanks in advance :)

I think I owe you an image search. I'm doing my entire house in aqua, peacock, orange, and yellow. It's a lot less frightening in person than it sounds. Anyway, to fit in, I'm going to have to do a yellow and turquoise kitchen, I think.

Those first pictures are amazing! I love the bed in the built in nook. I would think that kind of style would be very hard to pull off if you didn't live in a house with that same kind of architecture. It sure is fun to look at though. It appeals to a certain side of me...don't know if I would want to live in that every day though. For sure it is magical looking. Love that turquoise painted furniture...it's almost what you would imagine a gypsy caravan to look like. Speaking of, I absolutely adore looking at pics of old gypsy caravans. Wouldn't it be great to own one on your property and use it as sort of a getaway?

Are you starting your decor from scratch ? if not, what do you have as a base ?
|
Pretty pictures! I love the green and turqoise accents in the kitchens. I have some green milk glass and jadite pieces in my dining room. When I see those kitchens I think of the "Something's Gotta Give" kitchen except maybe with a white marble counter instead of black granite or soapstone. For the little eat in space it seems it would be easy to duplicate with some painted wicker furniture and a farm table with the base painted and distressed.

Any chance you could post a link to the first image? I love the landscaping!

The floor stencil in the "market" kitchen is way cool.

This style calls to my heart. Sweet, fanciful, relaxed, and charming. In addition to the right furniture, adding beadboard, trim, and moulding is good, too. Thanks for sharing the photos. I'm inspired.

Try getting the Cottage Living magazine, the best reference for inspirational design and decorating ideas I could find. Dont know if they publish it anymore but you could try your neighborhgood bookstore. Dont know any other resources off the top of my mind that matches CL for depth and insight.

I've saved a lot of pics but it's difficult to know which ones would be helpful as there are so many directions one could go. Vintage 20's/30's is not the same as English or French so perhaps you are looking for a combination or more eclectic style. Some features you might consider are: wooden counter tops, beadboard, skirted cabinets, pot rack, plates on wall, step-back cupboard, armoire, unfitted/partially unfitted kitchen, painted furniture, farmhouse table as island, open shelving, retro appliances, wooden shutters with louvres or gathered fabric, printed/gingham/toile/linen fabrics, and wallpaper. I'll post a few pics I have which might give you some inspiration. As Mitchdesj mentioned, it might be helpful to know what your starting point is. Could you post pics of any furniture or accessories you plan to use? Vintage kitchen... English kitchen from the movie "The Holiday"... Kitchen from the movie "It's Complicated"... Table-style island and pot rack... Modern French inspired kitchen... English/French kitchen... The following unfitted kitchen pics are from Veranda Magazine by antique dealer Donna Temple Brown and may be seen on this blog http://littlefrenchgardenhouse.blogspot.com/2010/04/kitchen-envy.html ... Same unfitted kitchen eating/sitting area... Same unfitted kitchen sideboard... Cottage Living magazine ceased publication a couple of years ago altho one can still buy issues on eBay - link below.

Thank you for sharing all of those gorgeous photos! Such beautiful interiors.....

Luckygal...we must be on the same page. I have always been entranced with the Holiday kitchen. Actually the whole set. How I would live in it is another consideration, but definitely take the opportunity if given. I love the eating areas and sitting areas in the kitchen. These darn photos just cause more visions in my head. Have seen the built in bed before. Thanks for posting Lavender, mine was lost in my head and couldn't remember where I saw it. It would be easy to do this, or at least possible with built ins added on both sides and below. I looked at a small house with one in the dining room. It was a 2 bedroom house and used as a guest bed. Although with the other inspiration photos, the idea could be used as part of the dining area and never thought about that. I want them all.....and my deco is rustic. Part of me says not to go there, but these are such delightful cozy rooms.

As beautiful as those built-in beds are, they are impossible to make up. My Granddaughter has one and I feel very sorry for her. I just love, love, love the pictures. dody

My all time favorite style. A feast for the eyes IMO. My friend decorated her house and summer home this way. Everytime I visit I can't stop wandering around her home and looking at all the treasures she has collected at yard sales, antique shops, etc. (she doesn't spend alot either) . I love it cause everything has meaning and a history behind it. And it gives off such a cozy and warm ambiance.
