My son used a bookcase to create a foyer just inside the door, into the living room. The backside faced the entrance and the front(bookshelf)faced into the LR. Since the backside was wood, he gave it a dark stain finish, and on the side edge of the bookcase(depth)which was about 12", hung a small gold framed mirror with a candle sconce above. It made a perfect room divider!

Avoid anything that looks too modern or too colourful otherwise these date fast.

or use back to back bookcases to divide space.
Or use planters (if you have good overhead lighting)
Oriental style dividers (think Japanese & Korean)
Glass dividers
recycled French doors as dividers.
or go to second hand shops to put together a screen from found objects. I recall an industiralist style divider using factory machine parts like cams all welded together.
