I'd try getting a 100% cotton filled futon and put it on top of your mattress. Well-made futons are dense and therefore firm and supportive.

Our Schiffman mattress (they're made in NJ) is extremely firm. I actually wish it was a little less so, though DH likes it. The tester mattress in the store was on a box spring, so seemed even less firm, even bouncier than our old mattress, but we don't use a box spring. We have the mattress on a platform (bed). That makes the mattress feel even firmer I suppose.

FWIW, we purchased our mattress at Bloomingdale's during a good sale, that also gave us triple reward points.
