Valance Dilemma - What Do You Suggest

no_green_thumb

I just repainted my kitchen and need to update the WT. I currently have a valance on the window over the sink. I do not have one over the sliding door. I think doing so would help soften the look.
I have chosen the fabric - small print, with a coordinating stripe for the lining (if I choose a lining that shows).
I will make the valances and can probably make the pattern as well.
The light fixtures will be changing. I am unsure over the sink, but those horrid sticky-out light bulbs my husband put there will be gone! I am looking for a drum shade - or inverted bowl-type fixture over the dining area.
My questions:
1 - Since the door is off-center and there is little room between the door and the cabinet, I am thinking of using medallions instead of a rod. Thoughts? - and how many should I have? The door is 72".
2 - Should I then do the same over the window, or can that be on a rod?
Basically, I am stumped, -- and I have been looking and looking. So far, nothing has jumped out at me.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
