Nursery - It's finally time to decorate.

| DH and I are having out first child, a boy, due in June. We're very excited.
I need some help sorting ideas. For those that remember the furniture arrangement thread, we (I) decided to switch rooms mainly because of the carpet color. It's currently a mess because I'm still in the cleaning out process.
We bought the rocker second hand. This is the crib I'm ordering in espresso. Many of the reviews say it's not a true espresso though but more a dark cherry with red and brown.
I purchased this fabric today. The small check is red, navy, ivory, and an olive tan color. I'd like to somehow bring out the olive/tan more somehow in the room.
There was only a yard of the larger check fabric but I could either use it in here or somewhere else in the house. It's navy, red, and yellow/gold.
The carpet is hard to photograph. It's a slate gray but somewhat chameleon like. At times I swear it even can take on a green tint depending on what you add. - I had to add the moose and beaver in there. The beaver is the coolest of cool with his leather feet. :)
*My biggest question right now is the bedding.*
I have a little over 8 yards of the red check fabric. I was going to have a few crib sheets made (I'd also purchase solid ones for extra backups) and buy a navy box pleat crib skirt (21"). Possibly trim out the crib skirt with a red band or the check fabric at the bottom. I'd use the left over fabric for room accents.
Now I'm tossing around the opposite idea of making a crib skirt out of the red check and using stock navy sheets. A concern, the check fabric is only 41" wide and if I were to use it for sheets, I know it's going to shrink a little even if I only put the dryer on low. I'm guessing the lady making the sheets will have to piece fabric together.
I'd be the one making the check crib skirt, YoungHouseLove style, just the sides, hanging straight, and using velcro to attach to the inside of the frame. I'd have to piece the long section together. The crib will be flat against the wall so I wouldn't even bother to do the back section. Would it be best to piece it together in three pieces on the front?

I'll be using a breathable bumper but I don't like how they look so I don't believe I'll even put it on until I need to. Due to the limited colors, I'd probably order it in the ivory. That or dark brown are pretty much my color options there! Maybe trim out the shiny satin edges that I dislike with different fabric. - by that point though, I may not even bother.
I'm going for a woodland/forest type look and I DON'T want it to read Americana. Again, I'd like to add that olive tan or even just more tan and brown to the room.
Other ideas I'm tossing around:
-light walls (leaning towards BM Linen White. I think I'd like something a 'tiny' bit darker though.)
-bookcase - I'd add beadboard backing and paint it
-a fluffy faux dk brown pelt rug - 3x5ish
-curtains and woven romans
-need to buy a dresser - darker stain or paint with maybe a dark glaze
-I'll be making an animal mobil and all the art.
So check sheets and solid skirt or solid sheets and check skirt? Open to other ideas except ditching the check fabric I just bought. Thanks!

Congratulations, Shee!!!!! I vote for using check for bed shirt, and buying solid sheets. Are you planning on recovering the rocker, or keeping it as is?

Thank you! The rocker will stay as is. The color isn't showing up great in the photos but it's tan. The second photo is more accurate. Three sections of fabric (two shorter side pieces) for the long part of the skirt? Getting a little a head of myself, digging through my pile of poster board paint samples, I think BM Manchester Tan might be a good color for the room. Maybe navy curtains. |

Congrats! Love the theme! I also vote for plaid skirt and solid sheets. You are going to be changing the sheets a lot, so your adorable plaid ones would spend half their life in the wash anyway. :) Definitely make a throw pillow out of the plaid for the rocking chair. I really like the color BM-Bennington Gray HC-82. I'm thinking of using it in my son's room. Here it is in a room: http://www.pbteen.com/shop/teen-rooms/boys-bedroom-furniture/oceanside-hampton-bedroom And here's another North Woods Bedroom for inspiration.

Yay! I'm sorry I can't add any decorating advice but I'll be watching this thread with interest. I've really enjoyed seeing your living room & bathroom come together (even your stair fiasco!) and can't wait to see this room. It's a great learning experience because you return with photos and continue to receive/try posted ideas. Thanks for being such an active GW'er Jennifer

I decided I am going to go with using the check for the crib skirt. Everything always seems more clear the next day when you're not tired. :) Geokid - Thank you! Oh yes, I'm thinking throw pillow and I think I'll try and make a changing pad cover out of the check fabric too. In general, I don't care for the color gray so I wasn't expecting that rich color when I opened the thread. I went,"Ooo"! Looking at the paint chip, it's very similar to that olive/tan color in the fabric I was talking about. I was originally thinking because of the carpet 'color' I should go with something light but I'm going to forget that for now and grab a sample of the Bgray this week. That's actually one of the boy inspiration rooms I have saved! :) Jennifer - Aww, thank you! Roseabbey - Thanks Now I'm going to force myself to shut the computer down for the day so I can get some cleaning out done.

Congratulations shee! I am so excited for you! I don't post often but am always interested to see what you are up to. You've got some great ideas. I love the woodland theme, because it's something that can stay with your son for many years. I also love that you've chosen some classic fabrics. BM Manchester tan is a lighter neutral with green undertones and has more substance than the BM linen white. I've sampled linen white in my own house and it definitely reads cool to me - it depends on whether you're going for warm or cool walls. Check sheets might be fun for your baby and give him something to look at when he's a little older. Babies are fascinated by high contrast patterns and objects. That being said, a solid sheet may make the crib a little more calming. Personally I would go for the patterned bedskirt which is what you'll see when you walk in, and a solid sheet for baby. Boys are great fun - I've got 4 of them : ) (Plus the one girl)

Congratulations, Shee and Mr. Shee!! Great ideas you have going, and we'll all be excitedly waiting for more updates on the progress.

Congratulations! and I vote for store bought sheets and home made skirt. You're going to be washing those sheets a lot and with hand made ones I'd be concerned about shrinkage too.

shee - that is so weird that you mentioned BM Manchester Tan. I realized after my post last night that I forgot to say that I thought you should look at it. My family room is that color and I totally love it and I think it would look great with your fabric. Oh, this is going to be fun for the next 5 months or so :-)

Congratulations!! I love your woodland/forest nursery theme...consider adding an owl in the mix : ) I do not have BM Manchester Tan in my home, but have admired it greatly on pics I've seen. I vote for solid sheets and check skirt. I bought a Breathablebaby mesh liner/bumper for the crib my grandson (6 mos. old) sleeps in when he's at our house. I think he was about 2 or 3 mos. old when he was starting to maneuver himself near the bars/slats of the crib. I suggest looking at the YouTube video for how to install this liner/bumper. The instructions it came with were not the greatest. The video helped a lot. When GS became 4-6 mos. old, he liked feeling the top satin edge of the liner with his fingers. The bottom edge is tucked between the mattress & the slats (about an inch or so below the top edge of the mattress). Also, at this age, I felt it was necessary to add more padding to the slats. He was lifting his head & body up so high and then rolling over. I felt the mesh was not going to protect his head enough. So, I am using GoMamaGo Wonder Bumpers for each slat in combination with the Breathable mesh liner. The Wonder Bumpers protect his head from getting smacked when he rolls into the bars while the mesh liner keeps his arms and legs from going through the slats (and getting stuck), & pacifier from falling out. Keep us updated on your nursery! Laurie

Thanks everyone! Laurie - Oh, I'm going to add an owl, a fox, etc. probably with art. Thanks for the feedback on the GoMamaGo Wonder Bumpers! A quick update, I have the bookcase but need the beadboard for the back. I'm picking up a few more paint samples tomorrow and the crib should be here Friday. Bought a curtain rod but didn't install it yet. Still haven't found a dresser I like but the finish of that will determine some other choices for the room. Oh yeah, and the room's cleaned out now! Bennington Gray is one of the samples I'm buying and I hope it looks as good as I'm picturing. I'm thinking Manchester might be a good color for the back of the bookcase. We'll see!
RE: Nursery - It's finally time to decorate.

I love the checks! Just make sure they'll match bright, primary colors which also needs to be in the room. Baby's and toddlers love primary colors! What color are you painting the bookcase?
RE: Nursery - It's finally time to decorate.
| | |
Oakley - I'd like to inject some other colors in the room, probably mainly through art and the mobile, but overall I can't handle a room that looks like a box of crayons. I thought I was doing good with the red! :) The bookcase is black. I thought about painting the back of the bookcase maybe red but it may look too harsh or dark with the black. Also considered making the back the same as the wallcolor. I'm excited to get some stuff in the room so I can see visually see everything. I'll be looking for some input throughout so stay tuned.

Shee - everything is going to be soooooo cute! I can't wait to see what you do with the room. Love your fabrics. tina

If I recall correctly our office walls are Manchester Tan. Great neutral color. Our Accent wall color is SW Comfort Gray which is more green than gray. It looks really nice together. Love anything w/ a fox and an owl. It'll look great! Congratulations!
RE: Nursery - It's finally time to decorate.

LOL, shee. You don't have to have a crayon colored room, but primary colors, even in the pastel versions, help a child's mental growth. Kids are attracted to them, which is why most kiddie toys are in primary colors. They stimulate their mind's. Crib sheets also stimulate and entertain baby if they have little trucks and such on them, in primary colors.

No help here - BUT congratulations!!! I know you and your DH have been waiting for the right moment to start your family. Exciting!!!

I am so excited for you Shee, I don't have any suggestions (no grand kids) but am going to enjoy watching you go through the fun of decorating here in the forum. I love your choices so far and can't wait to see the finished project! Congrats again to you and your husband!

| Ttodd - Thanks for the color suggestion! They do look together. Here's a shot of the bookcase without the beadboard backing and the shelves. I think the whole thing, finish and all, looks nicer IRL.
I'll post pics later today of some paint samples. And just because I want to talk about it... here's what I plan to do on the wall behind the crib. I'm copying the idea from Thriftydecorchic. I bought 11x14 black mat frames today. I'll be asking for ideas as to the color of the frames, hangers, and knobs. I'll be drawing animal pictures for the frames. I figure later on, our son can replace the art with his own or whatever he wants.

Congratulations! I like your idea of using the checked fabric for the skirt and stock navy sheets. You could even have extra sheets in the olive color to pick up the green in the checked fabric. The tan walls will look great with the blues, greens and reds in the fabric - very Ralph Laurenish :-)

Congrats, Shee. Wanted to chime in on the artwork. DD2 purchased all of DGS nursery artwork on etsy. The owl is my favorite. DGS loved the abacus from week 1. We were surprised he even noticed it at such a young age. So there is something to be said about stimulating them with color. btw, I saw some cute mobiles on etsy made from felt. Could give you some ideas.
