Put it in the center. The key, though, is to get the right fan. Do a lot of research on them before buying. You have to get the correct blade length for the room, and they have to be at the perfect angle. A lot of fans now are made cheaply and don't move a lot of air. Spend the extra money to get a very good one; it'll make a world of difference. Make sure it's also in the "cooling" position in summer and "heat" position in winter, if you get a fan with both options. Depending on which way the blades circulate, they move the air up and down (cool) or push the air down (to retain heat).

I agree center of the ceiling, went through same argument with dh on our master suite we have a huge tray ceiling, I lost for the center of the tray vs. center/foot of the bed, and I still hate it! plus he can't stand the fan on, and I love my fans! to me it looks ridiculous and way off, but I have to live with it, our electricians installed it, and change is near impossible now.

You will get plenty of air flow with the right fan, even centered in the room.

We are definitely having it installed in the middle of the room.

We are using a fan that we had in our office in our previous house. The ceilings were nine feet as is this ceiling in our new bedroom and we used a short down rod which seemed to work well.
