What's a good deep red paint for powder bath?

Posted by mitri89 (My Page) on

I'm thinking of going with a deep red for our tiny powder bath. It will only have a white pedestal sink and toilet and cabinet above. Tobacco Road or Whole Wheat will be in the hall just outside of it. Thanks!

Oh, and it'd be great if it was a Sherwin Williams color, as that's what our painter uses.

try any of these 3 Aura affinity colors. You might be happy with one of them.

Affinity- Caliente

Affinity- Pomegranate

Affinity- Dinner Party

Thanks for the suggestions. Are those Benjamin Moore? I wonder if SW can mix them?

they are BM colors, but these particular colors are stictly from their own proprietary collection and the acrylic pigments used for these particular colors have to work hand n hand with the Aura tint bases, so getting an affinity color to pull up in someone else's system is not likely going to happen. Not from the affinity collection that is. Their (BM) other colors from another paint store could get a comparable match you might be happy with.

I used BM Raspberry Truffle. Very popular red. Deep red like velvet mixed in Aura paint. I would recommend going with Aura as it's supposed to cover better in less coats. Also, many people recommend a charcoal primer rather than the red tint, which I did use. It took primer plus two coats with some touchups. It could have used the 3 coats.
If you are using SW paint, a good red is called Barn. It used to be a Martha Stewart Color, when she was affiliated with SW, and they should have it in their computer. My friend used it and it's a beautiful color. I was going to use it and then decided on Rasp. Truffle instead. The girl at the SW dealership mixed the sample wrong and it came out hot pink. I got disgusted with her and went to BM instead.

scanmike,
great point and reminder for mentioning to use the medium gray primer first. Definitely use this if your paints are a mixture of magenta or bright red pigments. Your inorganic pigments can be tinted with that color. Colors that are mixed from earth pigments or oxides. They will have better hiding qualities .

The three colors I mentioned do not require the red undercoater from the Aura affinity collection. Some of the clear reds and yellows from the preview deck do though.

Here is a link to a query I had in December about painting our powder room a dark color. A poster named 'deborahnj' answered and included photos of her gorgeous dark red powder room and she listed her SW colors.

Scroll down the page and you will see her pics.

Hope I'm linking this correctly

I used Cherry Bark by Behr in gloss for my dinning
room and I really like it.

I have also used all of these reds in various rooms
and love them too.

Pointsetta by Behr

Lattice Red by Ralph Lauren

Heritage Red by BM

Sherwin Williams paint called Stop

Red Stone BM (my sister swears by this BM more paint)

I agree with decorative walls, that any 3 of those BM Affinity colors would be great. They are beautiful, but can only be mixed in Aura. You wouldn't be disappointed.

Go with one of the 3 Aura reds mentioned, and use the Aura paint.

Reds benefit immensely from Aura's formulation.

BM hot apple spice. It's regular BM color so you should be able to match it in SW.

Thanks everyone! BM has some awesome colors for sure. The color red I have in mind is like Boxerpup's lovely dining room or BM Heritage or Stone Red, at least going off the way they look on my monitor. Thank you for the heads up on possibly needing a different primer depending on which paint we use. Makes me think if I want red that I might be better off painting this room myself, so I could use Aura. Our painter is going to be using SW Super Paint on all our other walls. Now, if I can just narrow down these last few color choices we'll be in business.:-) Thanks again!

We have SW Cherry Tomato in our powder room and DR.
It is a deeper red that is very rich.

Mitri89,,
I would highly recommend a primer. I had puddles of
tears trying to paint my dinning room. Oh it looks pretty
now but it took many coats. I was so frustrated.
I really thought if I used a good quality paint I would
not need a primer. I could not be more wrong. My older
sister told me, and I ignored her. Now I always use
a primer when I use reds, dark browns or even deep greens.

A primer is a pain but your paint will be stunning.
Looking forward to seeing your beautiful powder room.

Hubby and I went against the grain and painted our bedroom red. We have an earthy tone comforter (browns, tans, brick red) and painted the room SW Bolero. We put up wood blinds that match our dark wood trim and draped tan sheers over bulkier rods. We love it; earthy, dramatic, masculine and exactly what we wanted. If we ever sell, yes I may have to repaint, but in the meantime we have a room we both love to escape to away from our kids.

One hint with red, yes do use a tinted primer, but to get good coverage, do a coat vertical and the next horizontal, finish up with another vertical coat.

Thank you all so much. There are so many good possibilities! We found out that all walls will be primed before painting, and I think he said something about a special primer for really dark colors. Hopefully I can get to SW this evening and pick up some samples. I'll let you know which color we end up with.:-)

I don't think anyone has mentioned SW Flower Pot yet. That's a good, deep red. I used BM Maple Leaf Red in my powder room --love it.

i have bm morrocan red behind my range and on an accent wall in the living room. it's a colour i really love, deep and vibrant in every light.

Well, I tried a few samples! I love SW Barn, the Martha Stewart color that Scanmike mentioned. It's a gorgeous deep red just like what I had in mind. I also tried BM Raspberry Truffle(mixed at SW), and it is very nice too. It looks a lot like the Barn, but is maybe just a little darker. I think either of those would work great for our powder bath. I also tried SW Cherry Tomato, but it was too bright for what I'm looking for.

Thank you all so much for all the recommendations. I will be posting pics once the house is done, hopefully not too much longer.:-)

I recently painted our LR the raspberry truffle mentioned (around Halloween 2009) and we really do love it also. I will add a link if you would like to peek. Good luck with your selection! bonnie

Bonnie, thank you for sharing the link. Your home is very pretty! Love the Raspberry Truffle in your LR, very nice. What is your main paint color, the neutral in the dining and living? It reminds me of Whole Wheat or Tobacco Road. Whatever it is, it goes great with your other colors. I love your craft room too! Looks functional and very beautiful too.

RE: What's a good deep red paint for powder bath?

Thank you so much mitri89! The foyer is Ivorie, DR is restrained gold and FR is Ivorie.....all on the same SW paint strip. Good luck with your powder room !
