Should I go red?

Posted by tryingtodecorate (My Page) on

I'm thinking about BM Garrison Red or Hodley Red. The rug has a lot of red in it. Don't look too closely at the curtains. I just moved them in from another room to get an idea of how the color would look in the dining room. And I'm painting the frames of the pictures so that explains why one is gold and the other is dark bronze. Also, I'm thinking of doing the Ralph Lauren Candlelight paint over the new paint color, or maybe doing a gold ceiling with the Candlelight paint. Any thoughts? Critique away.

I think red would look wonderful! I'm not familiar with Candlelight paint, and I'm agnostic on the gold ceiling.

The two colors you mentioned look rather grayed out/pinkish on my monitor, but I'm guessing are probably more vivid in real life.

RE: Should I go red?

FYI- I once painted my old kitchen garrison red and it appeared more burgundy/purple than red...

 o
RE: Should I go red?

What color do you have there now?

 o
RE: Should I go red?

Definitely go red. It made by dining room come alive!

Raspberry Truffle

Not familiar with the color you mentioned but the red we used in the photo I just sent was BM Raspberry Truffle. We all love it!

RE: Should I go red?

Great! I'm loving the feedback!! The rug is more burgundy/plum so I was trying to get something close to that. I'll have to post a close up. The paint color that's in there now, really I'm not sure. There are actually two different colors in there right now and I've bought so many different ones that I don't know what is what anymore. I'm very color challenged. scanmike, I like your Rasberry Truffle. I'll have to get the chip and see how it would look in my room.

RE: Should I go red?

YES! Red will look absolutely marvelous.

I really love your dining room the color it is....perfect!

RE: Should I go red?

Red is a wonderful color.
And it will make your dinning room even more stunning.

Red, is like bubble gum, or chocolate or even coffee, once you've tried it, you love it! Why not??? If you hate it you can always repaint, right?

I've had my 'affair' with red, and had similar Queen Anne cherry furniture. I was blown away every time I walked in the room and to this day, think it helped sell my house. Go for it!!!

I love my raspberry truffle LR! I think you would love it.

RE: Should I go red?

Red would be fantastic! It would definitely give your room more life (tho it is very pretty as it is now). I painted my DR red a few years back and still love it. Give it a go! :)

RE: Should I go red?

Lovely room! I think it will look very classic. Why don't you do some sample pots and let us vote?!

 o
RE: Should I go red?

Another option would be to keep the walls as-is, and then redo the chairs in red. I'd go for some more dramatic curtains w/red in them, too.

 o
RE: Should I go red?

I love your dining room the color it is now; I would change out the curtains, the artwork, and the table runner to red tones, and maybe the rug. JMO.

RE: Should I go red?

I like Susie 100's ideas about changing some of the smaller elements to red to see how you feel first. Maybe it is just me but when I look at your rug, I just want to paint the upper half of your room in the blue that is in the rug - a warm robins egg blue/turquois-y color. Anyone else see it???

 o
RE: Should I go red?

Looking at your beautiful rug, I wonder if a more muted
red might be the best option.

Something like this....

Raisin Torte Benjamin Moore

Or maybe this...

Moroccan Red Benjamin Moore by Designer Laurel Bern

These more muted reds...
Tuscon Red BM

Moroccan Red BM

This is my dining room. I used Cherry Bark by Behr
exterior paint for my dining room. I wanted a high
gloss effect. The reason I am showing this is so you can
see that a more muted red like above would be better
with your beautiful rug. My red below is very cherry.
Almost candy pop red.
I would also not recommend Behr paints unless you have an
excellent primer. They do not seem to cover like BM.
Especially when using deep pigments like Red. Of course
I found out about this the hard way. I do like Behr
paints just not when using red.

RE: Should I go red?

Your rug is beautiful, but I don't see red with it unless you go very deep to burgandy. LA at Lowes has a nice burgandy. On my monitor, I see an eggplant color and the blue and a touch of rose in your rug. Eggplant or aubergine, can be beautiful and dramatic with the right light, not sure if you want to go that dark. If the colors I'm seeing in your rug are correct, then I just don't see red with it. The suggestion of a blue could look quite nice with your rug.

 o
RE: Should I go red?

Yes, Eggplant or violet. Wow. Now I am having fun living
vicariously through a GW home.

Here are some great colors....

Embassy Purple by Ralph Lauren. (Maybe this is too purple)

Now I am just getting silly. Wasting time on my keister
when I should be finishing a project in my house.

so many colors.... so little time to play.

So here is a great orange color
Adobe Dust by BM

Sienna Clay BM

And how about this...

Soft Marigold Pratt and Lambert (I could be wrong this was
a google image)

I must stop this. You wanted red and I got carried
away because I am being lazy about my important jobs.

WOW I love the pic of Raison Torte with the painted wainscotting...so nice.

I think I just got inspired!

 o
RE: Should I go red?

Your rug is beautiful and I can see blue going well with it but I personally dont care for blue dining rooms. I would do the red accents but if you do want to do red walls, I would definately due a muted blue red, sorry I dont have a name for you though. To start I would bring home a whole bunch of red paint strips to see what they look like against your rug to narrow down your choice of red.

 o
RE: Should I go red?

Your dining room, with it's rug and furniture, is already lovely and very well done. The chairs are elegant, the rug is very beautiful. I think pulling almost any color from the rug would work in there. Right now, it has a quiet elegance, but I read that you want to amp that up a bit. Try to find a subdued or muted red rather than anything too heavy or bright. Too much of a good thing is usually too much. I did like the Raisin Torte photo posted but I haven't seen that chip in person.

RE: Should I go red?

Wow, lots of awesome feedback everyone! LOVE the Raisin Torte photo (love that chandelier too), and I agree with the muted sort of red with some plum in it. That's what I should have said originally but to me, it's still a red, but no, I'll definitely not go bright red. Yes, there is blue in the rug and my china has light blue flowers, but I actually am not a blue person. That's why my china has been boxed away for the last three years but it does seem to go with the rug and since the rug also has red in it (or plum), I don't have to put so much emphasis on the blue, but it still works.

You wouldn't believe it's taken me three years to get it to where it looks decent but after going through the old threads on this website the other day, I got inspired by someone else's dining room (her name is posh something) and started switching things up.

Thanks for all of your help!

 o
RE: Should I go red?

With your rug and curtains and furniture I think the blue is a good fit too. Here is a link to a picture from a SW brochure-I can't paste the pic but go to page 8 I think for a Halcyon Green room with a gold ceiling. As soon as I can afford the painters this is what I'm going for!

I think the Halcyon Green is really a little richer than this pic shows.

RE: Should I go red?

The Raisin Torte looks to be very close to RL Balmoral Red, which I went overboard and used in a powder room, upper half of DR, and fireplace wall in LR. I did say overboard, didn't I? ;o)

 o
RE: Should I go red?

From the photo of your area rug -- I vote for a plummy color like the Raisin Torte.
