Ok, I have had it with this rug!

Posted by roseabbey (My Page) on

Yesterday we spent the day cleaning, really cleaning, meaning getting down on hands and knees to wipe the floors, moving furniture to get the dust from underneath, dusting ledges etc. Well today is a sunny day here and what do I see... fuzz from the wool rug in the family room all over my dark floors. I want, need to replace this rug with one that does not shed. I will move this one to the dining room where we dont go in there much. So, I am asking what color would you go with. I cant visualize anything else but burgandy but maybe you can. I would also get a larger one maybe 9x12 instead of 8x10 I have now. Here a couple of picture so you get the colors I have going on. Thanks for your help.

Oh, I love that rug! I think your room would take just about any color.

I keep reading that wool rugs shed but our's never has unless it goes into the vacuum cleaner and I don't notice it since we get a lot of dust and pet hair anyway.

How old is your rug?

 o
Just found the answer

I read this about shedding and wool rugs:

"In some rugs, there is what you may call a "break in period" where the rug will shed for several weeks depending on use and vacuuming. This shedding usually slows down and eventually ceases. There are instances, however, where the shedding is excessive primarily due to a lower quality of wool used. "

How often do you vacuum? I've been using the beater brush on mine so maybe that helps somewhat?

RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

The rug IS gorgeous and I agree that your room will be able to take practically anything. BTW, I am in LOVE with that artwork pairing in your third picture!

 o
RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

oakley, I have had the rug 3 years but it was in storage for one year. I think you might be right about the lower quality wool, the shedding should have stopped by now. I vaccum on average 3 to 4 times a week. I have a dyson and I use the beater bar.

charlie, thanks, I am not usually an abstract person but I really liked the colors in those pictures.

 o
RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

Does it shed as much if you don't use the beater bar?

I'm wondering how an oriental would look? I'd like to see some other colors, a mixture of deep reds (burgandy), blue, green, etc. if that would work with your chair. I can't really make out what colors are there.

A wool rug is going to shed, but I think by now it shouldn't be. Wish Tryin2grow would weigh in. . .

Hand-tufted rugs are notorious shedders.

If you want to be assured of not having that problem, you have to either step up to a hand-knotted or down to a poly rug.

Another possibility, with your nice eclectic decorating, would be a hand-woven sumak (spelled many different ways. Someone here just bought one on Overstock that was the identical rug she'd seen in a catalogue.

Time out... I've read you're not to use a beater bar on tufted rugs ? ? ?

As far as a new rug. I also like those colors so I'd stick with the same ones.

RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

I'm with Tina, I think an oriental rug with lots of dark reds would look great. It's a lovely room.

Beware the beater bars, lol. If you must , set it very high.

Beautiful room and that rug is perfect....
are you sure you can't take it any more, lol?

 o
RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

Thanks all, well now I am not sure if I have a beater bar or not. What I have is a powerhead with a brush. There is no high or low setting. The dyson has two settings, carpet or bare floor. I guess I should use the barefloor setting?

Parma42, I considered my style of decorating to be traditional so when you mentioned ecletic, I was sort of disappointed thinking it was where there really is no style but I was happily surprised when I googled it, that it can look quite nice if done right. Thanks

In my book, it's the best kind of decorating. :)

RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

How about a 9 x 12 jute or sisal rug -- very neutral -- with a dark brown border. Check at Overstock.com -- there may be one there that would work!

Gorgeous room BTW! LOL!

Hi Roseabbey,

I would stick with the reds. It really adds color. If you can't take the rug you have I still would look for something with red in it. Also, I agree that hand knotted rugs don't shed. However, they cost alot more. I just got a handtufted and it's holding up pretty good so far. I also have one in my dining room that is also not shedding after a few years. It probably depends on the rug. I vacuum alot since I have 3 cats. ONe rug is from Safavieh and the other from Home Goods.

 o
RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

So pretty! I agree with most everyone else about keeping the red in any rug you choose. The colors you have are perfect. Can't wait to see what you choose!

 o
RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

What you have looks very nice, but if you're ready for a change I think the room is crying for some rich green. I'd look for something with a green backround that incorporates your red tones in the furniture. The 8x 10 you have looks like the right size. Beautiful room.

RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

Your floor is gorgeous! I'd lose the rug entirely and let the place shine. Dust mopping is quck and easy.

 o
RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

Your room looks nice. I like the shade of green of the vase on the ottoman. I saw this one at overstock.

RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

I'm trying to visualize the rug with the red stripes gone and I think it would really brighten up the room but still have some pattern to tie in the colours of fireplace and couch. Anybody with photoshop out there?
I'm also coveting that artwork. Seems I could really use it!! :)

RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

thank you all very much. I have learned a couple of lessons here, one about rugs, didnt really know about the differnet types, always just went about buying them based on color and design. The other lesson was about my decorating style, I always thought I was traditional.

I shall go carpet hunting, I wish I could do it on line but I know even the rugs I have now I picked from quite a few I had to bring home to try in my space. Green might be an interesting color to try but I do like the burgandies. A couple of the other rugs I have are Tabriz, which I really like the feel of and doesnt shed at all.

 o
RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

Roseabby, burgundy is the main color in my home. When we went rug shopping I expected to buy the usual burgandy patterend rug.

But when we saw the one below, we both loved it. And the background color doesn't match anything in the house! But...it does have a touch of burgandy/rust in it and it goes great with the room. The background color is kind of a muted blue/green.

There's a medallion in the center of the rug.

Here's a couple of pictures which I've shown before, but every time I walk into the room I just smile! The investment was worth it!

Grace forgot to put her ear down when posing. :)

Online rug shopping

I wanted to add, I still stand by what I said in another topic, don't buy a large rug online. The colors you see online will more than likely not be what you expected. And you can't feel the softness or thickness either, or do a "shedding" test. lol.

Mine is a hand knotted persian but it was worth every penny.

I can't wait to see what you end up getting!

RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

Well, as a person who used to have dark wood floors and carpeting, may I ask, "Are you sure it's not just that your dark wood floors show everything, and not the fault of the carpet at all?"

When we had dark wood floors in our old house the dust was visible in the sunlight five minutes after I finished mopping them, and it became more and more visible as we walked on the floor. The corners where there was no traffic provided a very visible visual. Very frustrating. The same applies to dark unpatterned carpeting. I know the dust and fuzz is still collecting on the light colored wood floors and carpeting in this house, but it's nowhere near as visible as it was on the darks.

Also, the black slate in our front foyer is beautiful, but it shows every speck of dust.

If I were you, I'd roll up that beautiful rug and live with the dark floors for a few weeks before I invested in another rug that may not solve the problem. Well, unless you just want a different rug, of course.

Oakley, I read that in another thread where sometimes the rug doesnt go with anything in the room but stands out on its own and looks great. Your rug is beautiful and looks wonderful in your room, love Grace too! I agree with you about not buying rug on line, I would never do that, I envy people who can do that. When I do go rug shopping I may bring home rugs I dont expect to "go" in my space but just love and see what happens. I might get something totally unexpected. Thanks for that idea.

Sherry, you are right, the dark floors do show everything and I would expect to see some dust even if the carpet didnt shed, but I can tell that alot of it is from this carpet. I cant and wouldnt replace my dark floors, I love them, so I will just have to replace the rug. I do love the rug but as I said I will put it in the dining room where there is almost no traffic.

RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

I am attaching a link below about my search and education from some of the posters here about flat weave rugs (soumak). I probably am the person Parma was referring to. To make a long story short, I found a rug on Shades of Light website (fairly expensive home decor site) for app. $1700 - found the same rug on Overstock for $700+. After two or three thorough vaccuumings (sp), it does not shed at all. I will say that there is a very fine, almost powdery shedding thru the rug onto the floor, but I have not reversed the rug yet and cleaned the other side well. I just purchased a pad and have not placed it yet. WHen I do, I will reverse the rug and vaccuum it really well.

I also like the fact that it is reversible. In fact, I questioned here which was the right and wrong side and was told it didn't matter. One side appears to be a little "flatter" where the texture of the weave shows up more on the other side. It kind of gives you two looks. I will point out, they are not plush - they have an earthy, organic feel to them. I like mine so well, I will be on the lookout for a good deal on a coordinating one for my DR.

Also, another poster purchased the same rug. I think her name is Deeinohio (or something like that - sorry Dee). I can't show pics right now, but perhaps she might be able to share.

tuesday, thank you for your post. I think I do have one of those rugs in my guest bedroom. I bought it on a trip to Vancouver 3 years ago, for $800.00 at a store. It does not shed at all, as you say not very plush but I do love it.

I said I would never order a rug on line I have problems with getting the right colors, but I found this rug which I really like and am trying to talk myself into ordering it. It is not hand knotted though it is an anatolia rug, anyone know anything about this type? Does it shed? It has a geometric pattern, would that fit with my style in my family room. It is $1600 dollars, is that a good deal?

RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

I know very little about rugs, but that sounds like a lot for an online rug that is not hand knotted. It does look pretty, but I'd look around a bit more at things you can see in person. Even if you can return it, most places will not pay for return shipping and that can be very costly. Do you have a dealer in your area who will allow you to try rugs in your home?

You really have to be careful when buying rugs. I'd only spend that much on something where I was very familiar with the dealer and/or the quality of the rug.

FWIW, I love Karastan rugs. You know what you're getting and they wear like iron. They are also very re-sellable since it's a brand people are very comfortable with.

RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

i think i prefer the rug you have in your room now...the one you are looking at on line reminds me alittle bit of native american decor (or southwestern or whatever!)which i don't think ties in as well in your room...just my opinion.

 o
RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

I absolutely **LOVE** your rug and I know its from Bombay Company because I have the exact same rug except its smaller!! Funny thing is I've had no problems with shedding with this rug but the Pottery Barn rug I had was an absolute shedding nightmare!!
If you must sell this beautiful rug, just email me and I will buy it from you. The smaller version I have is my absolute favorite!!

RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

Jane, thanks I am a complusive cleaner...I need therapy!
jjam, thanks, I was hoping someone would try to talk me out of buying on line. This rug is from Restoration Hardware. There is no many area rug dealers where I live that is my problem. I really really dont want to order on line, but that rug seems to be calling my name.
busybee, you are right, there is a bit of a southwestern feel to the rug, so I am not sure if it goes with my room. I was hoping to get more opinions about that.
fleur, yes it is from Bombay. I bought it about 4 years ago, but it is still shedding. I have put in in the dining room which we dont use too much, but I do love the rug.

 o
RE: Ok, I have had it with this rug!

I'd hold out for a hand knotted rug.
They won't shed the way so many hand tufted rugs do.
