Color to Paint Beadboard in Hallway-Please help!

I would like to install beadboard 3/4 way up the walls in my long hallway that joins my kitchen, dining room and family room. This hallway is visible to all of these spaces (open concept). I think beadboard would be perfect for my hallway to hide the old drywall from the 70's that is in really bad shape and also because it is easy to clean with my kids touching the walls all the time when they walk down the hallway.

My question is what color should I paint the beadboard if my baseboard and casing moulding is white and my adjoining kitchen has cream distressed cabinets and cream backsplash? The wall above the beadboard will be the existing medium tan color that is throughout the space.

My Mom suggested that I paint the beadboard the same color as the walls but leave the baseboard and trim peice at the top white. I would prefer to paint the entire beadboard and trim white to brighten up the hallway but don't want the kitchen cabinets to clash with the beadboard. I would be grateful for your opinions on what color would look best for the beadboard as I hope to start this project asap.

Thanks again,
Carrie

What about a light sagey green like BM Fernwood Green? Or the same cream as your kitchen cabinets?

Thanks Maxsam for responding! If I paint the beadboard cream and the wall above the beadboard will be tan, should the baseboard trim and the trim at the top of the beadboard be white to match the other trim in the house?

Without seeing a picture, I'd tend to advise you to treat the hallway as it's own space. If the trim in there now is white (and it doesn't clash with your kitchen), I'd paint the beadboard the same color as your existing trim. But, your Mom did offer a good suggestion, too. Why not paint the different sides in each of the 2 colors and see what you prefer?

I vote white, if the other trim in home is white. Do you happen to have a picture of the area?

I would treat the beadboard as an extension of the trim that is adjacent to it, so I would paint it white.

I missed that the rest of the trim in the house is white. I think it may look too choppy if you paint the beadboard anything other than white. Do you have a pic?

I just typed out a message and posted it but it didn't show up for some reason. Here are some pictures of my tiny kitchen and the hallway during renovations. The wall in the first picture is the previous paint color prior to renovations. The hallway where I am planning to beadboard is to the right of the kitchen and all of the walls in the space are currently painted a medium tan (BM Stonehouse). I will try to post some pictures from my current kitchen tonight.

Thanks
Carrie

Here are some pictures of my kitchen and hallway. The current paint color looks a lot more yellow than it is in real life. What color should the beadboard in the hallway be? The entire hallway will be beadboard 3/4 the way up the wall from where the brown door is all the way to the back where the white exterior door is. Please ignore the ugly brown door. It will be replaced soon hopefully. I am hoping to use the beadboard to hide the bad walls at the bottom as the walls curve at the ends.

Thank you again,
Carrie

I wouldn't worry about matching your kitchen cabinets - those represent furniture, just as the table and chairs do, and so aren't a part of the 'trim' of the space.

I am a bit concerned that the beadboard 3/4 of the way up the wall will make the already choppy area feel smaller and kind of busy. However, if you really want the beadboard to help out the damaged drywall, then I would paint the beadboard the same as the wall color. If you want it white like the trim, then only do the beadboard up to chair rail height.

To roughly test the effect, hang a white sheet at the height you were thinking, take a couple of pix to get a more objective view. Do the same with the sheet at chair rail height.

I would NOT paint the beadboard in the wall color and then trim it out in the white. That would make things even more choppy imo.

Thank you very much for your ideas les917. I do not have to do any beadboard at all in the hallway. It is just that even if I try to fix the drywall to make them as smooth as possible, the walls are crooked on the ends so when you are walking down the hall in either direction you can see that the wall curves at the bottom. I thought if I used beadboard I could shim it out on the corners to hide the bow in the wall and again it would help with the washability of the wall with kids around the house. Do you have any other suggestions of what I could do with this space? I thought about painting the walls a lighter color (not sure which shade) the only problem I have is there is a stairway to the basement on the wall behind the hallway and the ceilings are a good 15 feet in there so it is almost impossible to paint the walls without getting paint on the ceiling.

Thanks again,
Carrie

I wouldn't do 3/4 high beadboard in that area for the reasons les mentioned and also because it appears you have 8'h ceilings. It's just not going to look right.

If you want the beadboard, make it about 36-42"H and paint it the same color as the trim. Having the trim and BB the same color will help hide the curve in the wall. I can see the problem area you're talking about and it looks like the drywall person built the corners out too far.

I'd price out the BB and then have a drywall person give you an estimate to correct the drywall problem. I really don't think it's worth going to the expense of BB to try and hide the curve. Easier solution is to paint the wall a lighter color (with a quality washable paint) and add a runner to take your eye off the wall! Having the wall a darker color than the trim highlights the curve.

Keep in mind that in shimming out the BB you'll need to remove the baseboard and shim it also, which could lead to your buying and installing new baseboard in a few areas.
