Kitchen counter lamp safety..question

Posted by oakleyok (My Page) on

I have under-cabinet lighting in my kitchen but I want to use a lamp in there when I'm not cooking.

I bought a small lamp which takes a 40w bulb, max. There's 5" between the top of the bulb to the bottom of the upper cabinets.

I really don't want to stand there for an hour to see if this is a safe distance, so I was wondering about the wattage of your lightbulbs and the distance to the cabinet.

The lamp on my hutch uses a 40 watt bulb. Distance is about the same as yours. Not a problem.

Thanks, Natal. It is getting hotter there, but not of a concern yet. I've had it on for about an hour and go check it every 10 min. It's the ex-Girl Scout in me. lol

I got to thinking, the under-cab lights get REALLY hot but they're not exposed either. I don't turn them on as much in the summer because they can warm up the food in the cabinets. Next time I turn them on I'm going to feel how warm the wood gets.

If you use a screw-in fluorescent, they're a bit cooler.

Still, don't store your chocolate above the lamp! :)

I chose fluorescent under-cabinet lights to avoid that.

I've used a counter top lamp in my homes all my married life, never had a problem. Have one on the counter in my bathroom and never a problem there either.

So far so good. I'm going to check and see if I have a fluorescent bulb.
