greatrooms not so great.....

Just found this site and am loving reading thru your posts and getting ideas.
Maybe some of you could share ideas on what to do with greatroom spaces when it comes to picking paint colors. My kitchen and family room are one giant open space separated by a long breakfast bar. My problem is that my kitchen has natural maple cabinets (not my choice but have to keep) and my family room has dark leather couches and cherry furniture. I am struggling to find a paint color that I like with both the light cabinets and then with the darker furniture. The space has no clear place to "stop" one color and start another without chopping up the space. Any ideas? I will have my daughter show me how to post pics if that would help.
Thanks for any input!

Can you paint the cabinets?

O.K. To Post Photos:

1) Join Photobucket and downlad your photos to a free album

2) Once you are done -- click on "All Albums" and go your "Default Album"

3) Click on "Just browsing" -- go to the photo and slide your cursor over each photo -- and four codes will appear. Click on the HTML code -- and it will automatically COPY -- come on back here -- and PASTE your photo directly into your message. More photos -- even better! LOL :)

NEXT -- Yes -- one option would be to paint your kitchen cabinets. Lots of folks here (including me) have done that -- and the result was truly worth the effort! Changes the whole look and feel of the kitchen and adjoining spaces.

Finally -- do you have a preference for color? Such as olive or sage green; maybe a grayed taupe; or perhaps a pale gold? Do you have artworks in the space? Fabrics? Rugs? The key may be to paint all of the spaces in the same color -- and then add accent tones around the whole area.

Just some thoughts -- hope you don't mind! :)

Your predicament screams for green.

Honestly, natural maple and your darker LR pieces all marry well with greens.

Another vote for greens.
If you can find a suitable place to switch colors you might try using adjacent colors on the same strip. We did this with BM Aganthus Green and Weekend Getaway-the AG is in our kitchen with maple cabinets and the WG is in the adjacent great room with darker couches and oak mission chairs.
Another really nice strip is the SW strip with Grassland and Svelte Sage.

W/O seeing pics I think Parma pretty much nailed it on the head w/ green. Once you are able to post pics maybe we can throw out color suggestions as a jumping off point for you.

I have a friend who has light maple cabs, and chose a sage green for the kitchen walls. She accented her GR with green/rust to tie the two rooms together. It looks great! ;o)

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I love the idea of green! The 2 rooms were originally a warm buttery yellow (valspar full moon). I wanted a change and painted it 2 weeks ago a green- Behr Asparagus. It is way too modern for me and almost neon with the exposure the room gets. My home is pretty traditional with a mix of french country. I am going to look at the greens you have recommended.
You guys are great! I am going to try and post pics! I am a little technically challenged, so might have to wait for my daughter to finish her homework....
