Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

Posted by mtnrdredux (My Page) on

I have a small cabinet in the water closet of my bathroom to store personal products. I'd like to put something similar in the bathrooms we are adding/renovating in the beachhouse.

Does anyone else have something like this? It can be a little bit hard to reach. I am looking for alternate designs, maybe more like a pull out drawer thing?

Thank you for putting up with me. I know I am posting an awful lot. : )

What is it?

Not currently but we are looking at doing something similar in our new house.
Are you looking to retrofit between the studs, under the eaves, or something else? Between the studs you could easily recess a prefab storage cabinet and trim it out, but you might not have enough depth for what you want. If you have a deep space you certainly could have a carpenter build you a drawer or rollout. We will have a pullout in our WC "wall" (which actually is a cabinet). Good luck!

Check out Mongo's pullout cabinet in his bathroom in the bath forum

It is a cabinet that we had built in, in the wall of the water closet to hold personal products.

I'd suggest placement adjacent (above?) the toilet paper holder. It would be easier to reach, and you could have it trimmed it out as one unit.

RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

Hmm, good point. I was trying to make it discreet, but I guess there is an ergonomic tradeoff.

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

How about a tip-out drawer then?

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

Thank you, I could not for the life of me think of how to describe it! yes! I think that'd be easier to use and to construct.

Thanks!

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

This is a fantastic idea. I also like the idea of doing this on the side of a vanity if you have a toilet directly adjacent to a vanity. Thanks for sharing.

RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

At the old house we had a rad cover that had sliding doors and storage in it. We got so used to it that we built one similar next to our Mbath John for holding tp and such.

But I love the idea of a tilt out.

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

Thanks, Pricklypear. I have to say that my secret compartment is one of the details I really appreciate in our home.

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

What an interesting little hidden compartment. I don't have anything to hide so I would just put toilet paper in there. I do think the door opens the wrong way so I would change that. I like the idea of a tilt out - assuming whatever secret thing you have in there can fit through.

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

We put something like the bottom part of this in the wall of our laundry room for trash/lint/etc. I love it.

Sasafras, it is for hygeine products. : )

BTW, my w/c looked so lonely in that photo! I decided to hang this lady in there. I think it looks suprisingly good, maybe because the walls are a good foil.

Im delighted, she was relegated to my stack of unused artwork before. Hope she isn't picky.

RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

I'd also suggest a tip-out drawer, especially if the space between the toilet seat and the wall is similar to the one in your current water closet.

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

It varies among the bathrooms, but I will probably spec them all the same just to make it easier. Thx

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

I've seen such cubby's in older homes and it's where the toilet shut off handle is located. Why it would need 'privacy' is beyond my imagination. ;)

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

Back when we were looking for a new house, I saw one with a WC very similar to yours. My first thought was, where in the world would I store my personal items (LOL)? Although NOT impressed with the WC, we did like the rest of his ideas and ended up hiring the designer/builder to design and build us this place. I still remember my conversation with him about the water closet in our en suite bathroom. I told him I needed him to make ours larger to include a narrow, built-in cabinet along one side. Being a bachelor he seriously couldn't imagine what I wanted it for. Men!

I like Anna's basic design, but see the need for a small cab in it, as well, for personal products. Perhaps in place of the trash receptacle. And, hopefully a little higher off the floor so that you don't throw your back out twisting to reach it. The only other alternative I can see is a cabinet built over the back of the toilet. I'd love to see what you eventually come up with.

We wuz more privat back in the day when no one needed to know where yo' bizness went and no one knowed where babies come frum. It mighta' been all the same place, goldern it.

Artwork

MTN, like your artwork. I have September Morn to the right of (I like her and her story) and a cubby above the "bowl" which is recessed like a medicine cabinet but it is of the same material as my vanity cabinets in the adjacent room. Although I think that very discrete where you have it located, is water overflow of no concern, or does that just happen at my house? ;-)

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

Yes! We have an alcove (sorta like a shower niche) between the studs and a drawer beneath that. The alcove has a candle and the drawer is great for extra TP and "whatever else."

Our carpenter also made a cute little magazine rack that lifts off to reveal the water shutoff valve for our third floor.

I love having this drawer. It was the architect's idea. He's a guy. I was impressed.

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

Now, why didn't I think of that?!? We'll be reno-ing our bath soon and I'm going to see about getting something like this installed.

I love all the pics.

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

I keep waiting for the cat to walk through the door lol. Honestly - it's "clever" but not decorative. Love the painting...

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

Hmm, what a great idea. I've never seen something like this before in a private residence. We may be relocating our first floor powder room, so might have to incorporate something like this in the design!

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

Thanks, Four. I think the idea really comes about from the popularity of designated water closets, since they never have any storage.

Seagrass, LOL funny. I'm glad you like the painting. It is an original oil by a Brazilian artist we bought in Soho. I used to have this one, and another one by the same person, over my bed. I will have to post its sister. Somehow a real oil with a nice frame always looks so luxe, and here (to my surprise) i think it actually looks good because of the gallery-like clay walls. What i really wanted over my bed was this but it was out of my budget:

I used to think the proportions on my nude were wrong (she seems awfully long-chested, if that is a word). But I am looking at the Ingres, and if it weren't famous, id say her derriere looks like a sack of potatoes.

Hi Shanghai (who has one of my fave kitchens and a cute dog too). Do you have any photos? Amazing what you can fit between the studs, eh?

Thanks Patricia. A cabinet over the toilet is another good idea. As for overflow, this w/c is mine alone, so it gets less traffic, which helps. Plus haven't they done something with the technology? Seems to me that new toilets do not overflow.

Lynne, funny! Yes water closets have their drawbacks. Not to mention I always want a sink in them.

Patty, let's hope no one roots around in there hoping to find a shut off!

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

Hear she is in an old spot, after she got kicked out of the MBR when we redecorated.

Still looking for a shot of the painting we had it paired with.

(Yes, I know that is the wrong way to store wine, and yes, that is a piano light.)

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

Thanks so much, mtn!

Here is a pic of the niche and drawer, plus one more for scale which also shows the mag rack/water shutoff cover.

I, too, have an oil painting that only my husband gets to look at. (-:

shanghai mom, and you have a toto toilet? (like mine).

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

I wish I had more space in my master bathroom. These toilet niches are fantastic. All of my bathrooms have toilets unceremoniously stuffed next to the vanity. While I am not certain if I want an actual toilet room (with a door), just looking at the well-designed niches with drawers, cubbies, etc is making me jealous. Thanks for sharing your lovely bathrooms.

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

These are very cool and now I must have on in my new bath, but that first photo, without context, was baffling--I thought it was for plumbing access like Patty-Cakes described. I had one of those in an old house and thought it was neat (crystal knob even!) until I looked in and pulled out a VHS porno box with something icky inside (ickier than the video would have been)...

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

Oh I have one! We currently live in an old farmhouse. It is a "plank house" There are no studs in the framing. The corners are beams and the "studs" are 1 1/2"x10" Planks. Two layers; exterior is nailed horizontally to the beams and nailed to that on the interior is the same size planks nailed diagonally for strength.
We had to stud out the house for insulation when we renovated, but I left a niche behind the toilet. Trimmed it out but no door. Painted the "planks" (they were filthy).
I just wanted to show off the planks a little bit. Extra towels get crammed in there now. But it's a little like the old lady showing her garters KWIM...
sorry - no pics

mtn, I saw this on My Notting Hill's blog and thought of this thread. I have no idea how to post a pic of it in the thread, but if you go to the blog and scroll down after the Lauren Liess spread (and do stop to admire - esp. the mustard yellow sofa) you should see the built in tile drawer. No idea how to do this, but it sure is neat.

RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

Patricia, personally I don't know how to take your 'answer'/post. Is your 'reference' meant to be taken as derogatory for asking such a question in honesty, and am i being perceived as dumb/stupid since i don't know? I've heard eastenters can be brash, and that's 'just their way', but in my world, it's unacceptable, as is being pretentious, snobby, and a know-it-all.

Your reference also 'reads' as racial, which living in Tx, I find offensive. As a matter of fact, it would be considered offensive in whatever part of the country you might live.

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

No, not at all. It was meant as a joke but I suppose when you are posting on a forum, not looking at someone when you say it, it comes across in a different manner. No offense intended and it was only a response of agreement with you but how people of an earlier generation may have felt. Sorry you took it personally, as it was not by any means intended! Okay, I am slinking off and will try to make amends for my faux pas by sitting in the corner.

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

Patty_cakes, give her a break. People here are absolutely pretentious at times, snobby at times, and know-it-alls at times. I thought Patricia's post was just trying to be a funny response to your not picking up on the idea that these cubbies are for Tampax and such. I did not read it as critical or intending anything in a mean way. Perhaps it could have been said differently, but really, no need to jump all over her.

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

Here is that cool drawer that daisy chain mentions above.

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

Such great ideas for the toilet area. We put a large cabinet above our toilet. It holds TP, bulk buy items, air freshener, etc. I am glad to see that I am not the only one that has art in the toilet area.

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

Just checking to see if Patty_cakes had read and responded to my response. I want to you to know, PC, that I am seriously apologetic and hopefully you will befriend by reciprocating if you were, indeed, serious or just playing with the forum.

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

It's all good Patricia. I'm not one to hold grudges, and after giving it some serious thought, came to the conclusion you didn't mean it as a derogatory comment. There have been many b**chfests on the boards, and some great people have left. It isn't worth the petty arguing as nothing usually ever gets solved and someone who was a valued contributor has decided not to continue the commaraderie of 'like minds'.

I needed to take the day off from here reviewing tax 'stuff' with my financial adviser before he takes it to my tax accountant, and accomplished quite a bit by giving up a few hours of my 'forum addiction. I hate when real life gets in the way! Now I need to see what I've missed.

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

I appreciate your response! Thank you. Hope your tax filing turns out well. Oh, mine too.

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

finally have some pics to post again so added my cubby to my post above

 o
RE: Does anyone else have one of these in a BA?

Love it, PPBenn. And btw, that looks like an unusual toilet?

Lyban, I actually do not have tile walls in any of my bathrooms, just tile in showers. But how cute that is!
