Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Posted by myjodi (My Page) on

I need help with my MB decor. It is off of the great room and therefore, I do want to pay attention to "flow" however, I also want to go a slightly different direction (so as to be exciting and fresh). My great room (ie, living, dining, kitchen) are in shades of gold, fawn, honey, etc. with red and chocolate accents. We have antique cream kitchen cabinets and dark walnut furniture (LR, DR, MB). We also have medium tone Brazilian Cherry hardwood flooring in the great room and MB. I've painted the "head wall" (the wall you face when you enter the MB) a deep and striking Mediterannien Blue/Turqoise, the other three walls are a chai tea color - you know, a dark "tan" with a hint of oranginess to it (I can post actual colors on next posting if necessary). I'm wanting to keep with the West Indies-ish feel that I've created in the other areas of the house, but also want to maximize on the ISLANDY (read, beach) part of the West Indies decor, as opposed to the FRENCH COLONIAL/Tropical print part of the decor (like in aforementioned greatroom). So, has anyone seen any coastal, breezy, lazy, cool (yet warm) BR decor anywhere (either in your house or elsewhere)that might provide some inspiration? Suggestions and referrals would be great. Otherwise, I will post pictures and see if any of you "experts" want to start from scratch with me... :) You are all so great! Very inspirational.

Great links, Gwen, thanks!!

Those are great referrals. Something to inspire. I think I'll post pictures and see what ya'll think... :)

RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Hi myjodi,

If you see this, I would love to see pictures. I am doing a West Indies look in my master bedroom and would love especially to see your paint colors. They sound neat.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

No advice here, but I'd love to see pics of your house...I'm doing West Indies look, too.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Here's a pic I love that I scanned out of an Ethan Allen book...great inspiration pic for British Colonial & tropical! Maybe it will give you some ideas.

RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Georgiagal's picture is delicious and it could be translated to green/blue, etc. What a great look!

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

I wish we could collect West Indies, British Colonial, Island Home sites, blogs, and inspiration pictures. I don't want to count on this thread to hang out for a long time. The volume of this board is so high I'm sure this thread will drop off about the time I need to go back and look at old information. I know I have a huge list of Shabby Chic and cottage style sites. Now, I know for sure I'm not Shabby Chic, French Country, or Cottage Style. I received British Colonial (the book) and love it. I'm waiting for the other 3 books to ship. I wonder how hard it is to develop a blog?

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Great idea about a blog...I'm not sure how to do one, either. Or, what it takes to maintain one. This thread will stay on top as long as we continue to post to it, won't it?

Georgiagal - Wonderful photo!

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

I think when I posted on this thread earlier today it had already dropped to about page 4.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

I love this style too and have been collecting photos for a while, I'll see if I can dig some up to post here. For now, here are a few pictures of one of the places we stayed on our honeymoon. It's in the South Pacific (the island of Aitutaki in the Cook Islands, where the last season of Survivor was filmed) so it's not quite West Indies, but I figure Polynesian is pretty close. I took loads of pictures of the decor because the place was so gorgeous and authentic.

The last picture is of a carving we bought for our first anniversary because it reminded us so much of the carvings that we saw everywhere in the Cooks, but which were much too large to carry home.

These pictures are so wonderful. I especially love the carving!! Soooo beautiful. You are so lucky. Let'skeep the thread going! It's great to network. It's connecting to others and sharing information that really makes the world go around! Thanks ladies!

Also, here's a link I found that (unfortunately) doesn't have any pictures, but the article was great (and short).

Here's some more good stuff

Also, I found a "collection" (that the pictures of are most delicious!)called National Geographic Home - West Indies Collection. Google it. Meanwhile, here is a copy of the picture I found - if I can manage to do this...I've not posted pictures from the web before.

RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

This is a really fun thread. I'm really enjoying the pictures. Interesting article too. I was all set to paint my master bedroom a BM color called woodlawn blue and do accents in chocolate brown and perhaps some golds, but now I'm second guessing myself. Maybe I should paint it white or off white, or even a straw color.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

This is slightly veering OT, but I can't resist asking this purely out of curiousity: What are our ages? Are we generation X, Y or babyboomers?

The reason I ask is that at 41, I am the first year of generation X and so often I am always going opposite of the baby boomers, and usually no one is going my way until those younger than me "catch up" to me. I have been working on this type of bedroom for about 4 years and am only now seeing this design style begin to creep in. So, where to the rest of you fall in?

In my case we have just remodeled and have a new bedroom so I am starting all over again with white and very pale blues and dark woods. I am planning on a canopy platform bed with cheesecloth netting, hardwood floor layed in a diamond pattern with contrasting woods, potted palm-like plants, white wainscott the from about 6 feet down, blue walls above with faint dry brushing of pinks and golds. We have 9 feet of windows that I will leave exposed (we are the highest on our hill, so no one can see in).

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Dainaadele,

What you have described about your bedroom so far sounds wonderful. The dry brushing on your blue walls with the pinks and golds sounds intriguing. We built our home 12 yrs. ago and are ripping out the carpet in the bedroom and putting down hardwood, repainting and we bought new furniture. (kind of a Tommy Bahama look by Drexel called Captiva) I'm especially excited about the furniture as I feel like the old furniture (which will be going in the guest bedroom) just wasn't me anymore. It seemed stuffy and boring somehow.

In answer to your age question, I just turned 48. I guess technically I'm a baby boomer but I think on the very tale end.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Depending on which cutoff dates you use, I'm either Gen X or Gen Y - right on the cusp, I guess (I'm 26).

I found this slideshow while browsing the BH & G website the other day, thought people here would appreciate it.

RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Hey, I have a couple more inspirational pictures I wanted to share...how do you post pictures in the body of the message instead of using an URL?

BTW, I typed a HUGE update as to all the great ideas I'm going to do in my MBR and I lost it...AGGH! It was my own fault, lazy fingers...

I'll post again soon! P.S. I'm 37.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Unfortunately, I can't answer your question about posting pictures, but I would love to read your update about the ideas for your master bedroom. I finally (I think) have picked my paint color for my bedroom. I'm going with Benjamin Moore's woodlawn blue. It looks blue in some lights and green in others. I'm a little stuck on the bedding. I'm not sure if I should go with chocolate brown or perhaps a more beachy sand or ivory color. And I'd like to bring some greens into the room as well. I bought a large glass "vase" the other day and put some shells in it that I have collected from various vacations. I'm going to put it on an etagere that I bought that will go in the room. Now the room needs to be painted and the hardwood installed before the furniture can be delivered!

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

I'm going to use shutters to decoratively frame both sides of my window, and I found some great voile panels at Cost Plus that I will use for the window coverings (I want something organic and breezy). I'm going to hang a "canopy" from the ceiling over the bed to give the feelig of a four-poster, but since our lifestyle doesn't warrent an actual four-poster canopy (and I LOVE our bed already). I want to install a capiz shell chandelier. I want to keep the bedding mostly white, but I will have some brown and aqua throw pillows, and I think I'm going to throw in three Euro-sized zebra print pillows for the bed too (for funk and pizzaz). I found a website that sells real nautilus shells cut in half (which the inside is the cool part) for reasonable prices so I think I want to buy 2 slices and frame them to keep with the breezy/coastal feel. I put a wool "oriental" style rug on lay-away to go with the brazilian cherry hardwood floors that is golden, with a tad of deep red, a tad of silvery blue, taupe, etc.

Of course I have a couple of tropical plants to add in, a orchid or two and the coup de gras is the art work I found for over the bed. I think the whole look will pull together wonderfully!! I'm so excited!

Of course one of these days I'll post pictures.

RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Maybe this is the look I'm going for? I haven't pinpointed it yet. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the nat'l geo bedroom. Since when did they make furniture anyway?

And I'm a Gen Xer :~)

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Great thread! (Gen X'er checking in)

Here's a bit of a modern take on tropical:

I love this table and chairs from Ashley Furniture.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Nat - ohh that room is really pretty

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

What I find I love about the style is the slightly more formal look to it without being fussy. Kind of the fusion into "dress casual;" like the room was wearing khaki pants and collared shirt vs jeans and T-shirt. Anybody agree/disagree?

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Myjodi, we think alike. I have white bedding and mosquito netting hanging above the bed. I also love the idea of zebra print pillows, since I have a zebra rug in the living room. I hope more will respond to this fun post.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

You know, if you guys want to keep a thread alive, you might want to start something over on the Gallery side of this board. I don't think things drop off into the void over there...

The Lexington furniture website has some decent pics of this style under the Tommy Bahama line. There are a couple of catalogs in pdf you can download.

Here is a link that might be useful: Tommy

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

I'm fairly new and don't know much about the "gallery" option. If anyone is game to take it on, let me know, I'll support it 100%!!! The Tommy Bahama line is sooo cool too. I looked around at his collections last night.

BTW, if you have a Big Lot's store around and are looking for the cool zebra print pillows, they have Euro sized one's for $10!!! That's where I'm getting mine!

Anyone else love the idea of using shutters (or even actual Plantation Style Shutters if you aren't concerned about the finances and want to customize) to pull together this look? DH and I were even talking about DIY our armoir doors to have shutters or even jigsawing out the panel in the armoir doors and insetting rattan or bamboo veneer. Sounds fun doesn't it?

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Like the thread, the photos, love 'coastal breezy'. (I feel sometimes, I belong by the sea ;) If you look at the very top of the main page of "Discussions" here, myjodi, you'll see options for "Gallery" (for photos) and "Conversations" (for whatever one wants to chat about ;)

 o
Correction

(sorry, little sleep again) That should read 'if you look just above where Discussions starts here at Home Dec, right above posts' (not the very top of the Home Dec main page)

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

LOVE this thread! This is definitely my style - don't know what generation...probably babyboomer (48 years old - yikes!)

Acoreana - I have that dining set from Ashley Furniture - just had it delivered, so I can't speak to the wear-ability. Quality seems quite nice! Ashley also has great buffet options in the same style. The pieces look "pulled together" without being matchy-matchy. Love them!

Amysrq - thanks for the Tommy link. Love looking at the photos - great inspiration!

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Well, it's not exactly West Indies breezy plantation but my entry does have some of the elements - a heavy wood carved table topped with tropical plant arrangement, pineapple lamp, some shells, small wicker backet. I believe there was some Asian influence on British design at one time. And since the British colonized the West Indies, prehaps some of that Asian influence trickled down into my calligraphy artwork? ;) I don't really know about that, but I enjoy the combination.

Anyways, I think it feels quite light overall, although not breezy coastal. It's all still a work in progress :-)

I want to change the mat on the calligraphy, add a little color but still keep it understated. Also, finish off the ottoman with some trim (the reason it's puckering is because I haven't permanently attached the skirt yet). Any suggestions?

By the way, I'm 46, I guess that makes me a youngish baby-boomer.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

perky, I know, it's an interesting twist on tropical. The table and chairs are what have me drooling. The look I'm hoping for is very similar to gwendolynne's amazing hm photos. The contemporary lacquered dining room set I purchased for my loft in a converted mill 10 yrs ago is doing nothing for my new FL dining room, lol. It's the opposite of tropical, ugh.

determined, LUCKY!!! :-) When I get ready to purchase I'll be looking for you.

RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

cind11 Choose your fabrics before you paint. We painted first and had a hard time finding fabrics. Designer told us that we should have chosen fabrics first, and then painted. The labor to paint is expensive, and to do it yourself is so time consuming, that it is better to get it right the first time. One woman told me that after searching for a year to find fabrics to match her blue room, she gave up, and repainted it another color.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Well, uh oh, we painted last Friday. I'm not too worried even though I see the designer's point. The walls are blue but my duvet will be very neutral, a solid color that I haven't decided on. So, the only thing that will have a pattern will probably be some pillows and a window treatment eventually. I'd like the window treatment to be a sort of simple, gauzy type fabric. I'll bring color in through the artwork and we bought a new etagere that I'll be able to put things on. The furniture is being delivered Saturday and today they're laying the wood floor.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

I hope you don't mind if I join you guys? I think that the style you are describing fits my style pretty well. We are in the latter stages of a major remodel but here are two bathrooms that were finished before the remodel began. Our house has a tropical, coastal, breezy, plantation look. It's on the water in Gulf coast Florida so we felt the style would work (apart from loving it). I hope there are many more posts on this thread as I have to source furniture, fixtures, fittings, fabrics etc and decide on colors for a very open (breezy) house.

RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Thank you for your kind words, lindybarts. The wall color is
BM 1033 Hillsborough Beige, though it doesn't look like beige to me, more like rich milk chocolate. I'm a bit embarrassed to answer your question about the sconces, but to tell the truth they were very inexpensive pewter colored ones from Lowes. I painted and lightly bronzed them (and also the towel rails and toilet roll holders for their third incarnation.) I will be painting our iron bed for the adjoining master bedroom too.
As I am in the confessional, I will admit that the rounded tile that edges the marble and tile in the two bathrooms above is actually wood that I painted to exactly match the tiles below! It took a little time to get the marbling exactly right but once I had figured that out it was an easy job. None of the edging 'tiles' are in contact with water and in any case they are totally sealed. No one has suspected that they are anything other than the real thing and many visitors, even when it is pointed out to them, simply refuse to believe that they are painted.
The vanity in that top picture and the larger one at the other side of the bathroom (not in the picture)were made by my DH from black walnut with bamboo inset doors (the bamboo was from a blind from Pier 1) He also made the frames for the mirrors and a vanity stool.
Phew! Glad I got all that off my chest!
I hope others will post photos of their own interpretation of this style - it would be so inspiring.

RE: Inspiration book

I recieved the long awaited book-Tropical Houses Living in Nature in Jamaica, Sri Lanka, Java, Bali, and the coasts of Mexico and Belize. This thing is coffee table size. It fell of the bed and sounded like a cannon. This is the book I have been looking for: little British Colonial, little Asian (out door/indoor with little transition), Key West (small houses using the outdoors as rooms), world traveler (stuff from all over the world) and minimalist (not cottage-stuff on top of stuff) Bought it from Ama*** $36.00USD and free shipping.

I wish you would all come over this week-end-I don't have any homework for school-bring the kids, the beach is just over the hill and we can drink Mojitos (a Cuban girl taught me to make them). I just don't think you can spend the night because I have only 2 beds and a little empty nesters home (I qualify for the small homes forum) So come see my new book!! When will you get here?

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

This is my first post. I've been lurking around for a while now, but Sis3's vanities caught my eye tonight, and I wanted to say something about how great they are! :)

Sis3, I also love to use things I have and change them to give them an update or use something inexpensive and make it look fabulous. It's a lot of fun.

I've been talking to my husband about building a couple of vanities for us, and the one that you have with the open storage is just like I've been imagining. Did your husband have an inspiration piece that he used to base his design? They are both absolutely gorgeous. :)

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

beehappy2007 thank you very much for your kind words, they are so encouraging!
We can't take any credit for the vanity in the 2nd of the two photos I posted earlier as it is straight from Pottery Barn (we had no time to build a DIY one in that room). We just lightly sanded the top and gave it a coat of marine varnish.
DH's vanity in the first photo posted earlier, and mine in the photo below are both in our master bath, on opposite walls, and were my design. I just sketched the idea and DH built them. The bench at the bottom right corner of the photo below was DH's design.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Sunshine, thanks for sharing that info, I'll be picking one up.

Sis3, as others have stated, fantastic look/job.

Nat

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Sunshine, I'll be right over as it is about 47 and raining here! I'll have to check out that book.
Sis3, the vanity is so clever. I wouldn't have the guts to try something so big! It is a beautiful bathroom. Question-what kind of wood did DH use for framing the mirror? I am thinking of doing that to my ugly builders 6 ft. long glued on mirror that I can't get off the wall without tearing up the drywall behind it. Did he use picture frame wood or something from HD or Lowes?

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

ld14051 DH used the off cuts from the vanities to frame the 3 mirrors. It's black walnut from a local hardwood supplier. I suppose any wood that would accept stain well would have worked.

Sunshine I took a look at that book online - It looks like the kind of book I like to curl up with in an easy chair at the local bookstore. I wish I could take you up on your offer - mojitos and a lovely book, what more could anyone wish for?

 o
RE: You missed dinner!

Crawfish, boiled potatoes, sausage and Shiner Bock from TX. Then a dip in the hot tub to get the kinks out. We put down a pallet of centipede grass. Boy, when I was 20 it didn't seem like much!! The weather is 70 with a cool breeze-NO BUGS-I can't believe no bugs.
The book is too large to flat bed scan but it sooooo much like the resort pictures earlier in the thread. This isn't British Colonial at all but very Bali. I wish you could see it.
Ornate fretwork in plain stucco rooms. The few decorations are highlighted like the art they are. Years ago when life was unkind I threatened to run away to Bali. I "meet and talked" with a girl from the US working in Bali at a 4star as a F&B manager. Well, I was in food service for 10 years and had lots to talk about. We talked everyday and I enjoyed her beach lifestyle right until the beach bombings. I couldn't get a hold of her for almost a week and really didn't have much beyond a first name and an employer. She e-mailed me from Oz from her new boyfriends and never went back to Bali. She partied almost nightly in the clubs that were reduced to rubble. Be careful what you wish for!!!

The book is wonderful but heavy. Every page is a large photo with concise descriptors. What a great vacation for $36.00.

Good night ya'll I have to move the sprinklers.

Check out the great West Indies furniture and accessories at Bauerinternational.com. Several hotels that my husband and I have stayed at have furnished their rooms with some of their pieces. Every time I look at their website, I can't help thinking about Elaine Benes and her job at the J. Peterman catalog (from Seinfeld!)

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Looking forward to your post, Red. I so hope we can keep this thread alive. There must be others out there with elements of coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies style in their homes (or in their futures) - it would be good to hear from them. More pictures like the one above would be great too - I believe you can never be too inspired!

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

I just wanted to mention to everyone how much I love the Benjamin Moore paint color (woodlawn blue) that I chose to go with for the West Indies look. I'm trying to somewhat duplicate this room although I don't have a canopy bed: http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/dc_design_bedroom/article/0,,HGTV_3366_2641178,00.html

I have never been that much of a fan of blue paint, but the color is so restful and will go nicely with other colors to (hopefully) remind me of the ocean.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

myjodi, thank you for starting this interesting thread. I have been looking for a fresh new look for my home and when I saw the recent PB catalog I fell in love. I recently painted my MBedroom and Bath in an soft aqua/green blue and also painted the guest room in a similar soft blue. I too have an open floor plan and am struggling to find a new look that is unique but the colors must flow. I would also like to pull in some of the rich greens such as in the bedroom picture shown above.

If I come across anything I feel that would be helpful I will post a link. I have alot to learn yet.

I am curious to see kitchens/breakfast areas, guest baths and decor to go in these rooms.

Thanks again and I hope this great thread keeps going:)

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

That is a lovely color cind11. I want to use a soft green/blue in various ways and amounts in many of the rooms in my house. I am drawn to this Ralph Lauren design.

RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Hi sis3. I looked at your link to the bedding. That is really stunning. I thought I'd seen everything on the Dillard's website when I was looking for bedding, but I never came across that. Are you doing a bedroom?

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Hi cind11,

We are in the last stages of a major remodel where only 2 bathrooms (photos posted earlier in this thread) survived, so now I am beginning to think about decorating and furnishing all the other rooms of the house. These include 4 bedrooms! Yikes!

The second of the two bath photos I posted is a guest bath in a light caramel color which I would like to tie in to the palette I now see for the whole house. If the background color of the RL bedding is caramel, as the descriptions suggest, rather than gold, the bedding could be used in the guest bedroom to tie the existing bath into the colors I would like to use for rest of the house.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Oh, I did see the pictures of your bathrooms. I just didn't connect that it was you. Your bathrooms look very elegant. Since you live in Fla. I can see this style working well for you. I live in Ohio so I'm limiting it to one room-lol.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Here's a decorating question for you-I am trying to get that British Colonial/tropical feel in my bedroom. Last year we purchased a new bedroom set in a dark mahogany finish(hubby was willing to spring for complete EA British Classics set, but I, being a good girl, opted for a less expensive similar, but not the same, set-could kick myself now!). However, the wood of my baseboards and window frames are lt. oak. I want to get wood blinds, outside mounted. Should I bet oak, or sometingnot quite as dark as walnut, maybe a natural cherry of cinnamon finish?
I have a cabinet in my bathroom that is a mix of lt. and dk. woods and it looks very nice. But seeing as blinds are an expensive purchase, I can't afford to get it wrong.
The color of the furniture wood is a little darker than it appears in the link.
Thanks.

Id14051 you might get more help if you start a new thread. I too love this look. That bedroom furniture is beautiful. I hope this thread will be continued, I love it!

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Would my paint color choice work in this style room. Its sort of dusty pink actually called bridal rose by Behr. I have dark wood floors and dark wood furniture. Thanks!!(Its my master bedroom)

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

I don't know if certain colors are not usually identified with this style - personally I can't see why it couldn't be built around almost any color - with the right furniture and accessories. I hope that those on this site with more knowledge and talent than I have can help you with this question.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Thanks, I've actually decided to go with a Sherwin Williams color called mulberry silk that is a part of their victorian collection, since the house was built in the 1800's and that color is actually closer to what I envisioned. I actually found it through a post in this forum. Its a darker dusty pinkish rose color. I'm thinking white and cream linens with the dark furniture. I think it will work

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

It sounds beautiful, anew.........I will have to check it out when I hit SW this week.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Isn't this style that's been around for some time known as British Colonial? Or is it tropical? Usually dark furniture, lots of plants, and animal prints are involved with this style~I love it to!
Bamboo shades and a sisal rug are good items too~lots of texture.

I think a sage green or medium tan color would be great on the walls as it would leave bedding and accessories to be the focal point. ;o)

Geez, I have been trying all night to post and finally made it. I just love this tropical thread. I am slowly redecorating in this style and have found a couple of interesting websites I thought you might like. www.touchofclass.com and www.lexington.com. Right now I am in search of wall decor. Love all your pictures and hope we can keep this thread going.

RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

I have fallen in love with the look of Tommy Bahamas ceiling fans BUT $695.00USD is a little high. I think Lowes has a knock off look fan with carved wooden blades. Do you think I will regret such a weighty fan in an attic bedroom with lower ceilings? Maybe I should let the fan disappear? I'm thinking hugger with a fairly flat not dangling light kit. What to do?

RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

This was such a good thread that I'm going to bump it back up. Maybe I can post a pic from my room that I keep trying to get clean enough to photograph?

RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

My sister is moving to Florida and loves the beach look. Financially she can not purchase new furniture and all of hers is med. dark wood. Her sofa is a saddle/brown color. Is there any possible way she can get the beach/nautical look with this furniture. She doesnt want tropical just beach/shore look. Any pics would be appreciated as this is the only way she (and I) can picture it.

Thanks

I love it when this topic pops up again.

I just thought if you haven't seen them already you might like to see the rooms in the Stanley Barbados collection catalog. If you click on the link below and then click on "more images" immediately under the photo you'll see all the photos for the dining room section. (I just love that Plantation Wine Bar). If you like you can go back to the beginning and, using your browser back arrow, see other furniture groups e.g bedrooms that also have "more images".

RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

In response to Sunshine's post in April, the tropical style fans seem to have their downside, some of them don't move much air. There is some info on this on the site below, and a star rating for air movement for the fans they sell. I would be interested to know if anyone has a tropical style fan that effectively moves the air.
http://www.hansenwholesale.com/ceilingfans/tropical/default.asp

princesssusan - although I personally associate painted furniture with the beachy look, it seems there are many ways of achieving it. From a quick glance through a couple of issues of the Coastal Living magazine I could see quite a lot of medium and dark stained furniture in lovely coastal homes.

I am no expert, but perhaps your sister could pull together the beachy look she desires by choosing paint colors, fabrics and accessories that suggest the beach/nautical theme. Also if she has any furniture that has a finish she doesn't particularly care for she could paint it to help achieve the look with little expense. (I am just in the process of staining some furniture that no longer fits my ideas - really pleased with the results so far! This may turn into an obsession!)

RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Bringing this thread back to life...

I have the Tommy Bahama Marine fan. It has a very tropical look without being ornate. It has the highest airflow rating a fan can get. We have it on a 20 foot ceiling with a 6 foot downrod and still get great airflow from up there. I highly recommend. They cost around $500-700, but are well worth the cost, IMO. Very powerful motors.

Is this site still in existance? Coastal, breezy, plantation,West Indies?

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

I just received my edition of *Romantic Homes* and the subheading is "get the British Colonial Look." They must be feeling the gen-x crowd's interest. They also were featuring BC in 1990s, when I was doing my rooms in BC. Now that I have sort of moved on, they are featuring it again. I still use many items from my BC look as most of them are things we have around our homes anyway, for those of us who like to collect and change a lot. It's just linens and paint colors that mostly change the look. I still don't see any of the British Colonial lovers with fresh flowers on their bed trays or tables and that is imperative in a tropical area, as flora abounds year-round.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Cind11,

did you end up painting your bedroom BM Woodlawn Blue? I would love to see a picture of it. I too love the British Colonial look. Am looking for a nice MBR color that will be calm and serene and remind me of the sea and the tropics. This is a great thread!

Thanks,
Kaye

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

A nice accoutrement to that beachy tropical or West Indes home, are these pictures.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

I was going through some of my "old" magazines the other day and came across some wonderful British colonial pictures in the April 2006 issue of Veranda magazine. I absolutely love pages 178 - 182. I wish there was some way I could find out the color of the walls on pages 181-184. It is a light airy greenish blueish color that absolutely reminds me of the ocean.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Kaye, when you described the color, I decided that I thought it sounded like Misted Green from BM. I googled Misted Green and found this from Michael on Designing for the Sexes.

*Michael: Consider a silver, grayish green color for your walls. Let me give you a specific color... a color like Benjamin Moore, Misted Green #2138-50. This color will work beautifully with your Dusty Rose carpet and give you the feel of the room that you desire.*

Another color I thought of was Silver Sage, which seems to have that color you describe from what I have seen in person, but it does not look so much that way on my monitor. I wonder if Silver Sage users would chime in here, because my #3 DIL has it in her bedroom with all white bedding, high ceilings, lots of white molding, white plantation shutters, black wrought iron bed and all pine antiques in the room.

RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Hi Kaye,

Yes, I did paint my bedroom the woodlawn blue. I love the color, it does remind me of the ocean. I've thought of posting pictures, but am unsure how to do it...

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

I have used Woodlawn Blue for a guest bedroom which has water views from 3 large windows. Our home has British Colonial inspired decor throughout. The Woodlawn Blue color is lovely.

I will post photos as soon as the suite is finished. It still has no pictures or finishing touches yet so is not looking its best!

If you haven't seen this month's issue of Traditional Home, go & take a look at the link. There's a nice spread with lots of British Colonial inspiration pics of Barclay Butera, a wonderful designer. I just bought a copy of the Feb 08 Verandah magazine and it has a spread on a gorgeous, cool-yet-warmly-inviting beach feel home in Florida.

I keep trying to close the magazine but I can't stop admiring the photos. My dream colors.

RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

I am VERY interested in this style and want to do something like it in my family room/kitchen. One of the big questions is what kind of sofa to buy. I saw the Klaussner British Isles sofa, which is sort of like a day bed with lots of pillows in a wood frame. It's got a beautiful back, which I appreciate since the sofa will float in the floor plan. BUT it doesn't look so comfortable. If you are doing British Colonia and want a fully upholstered sofa, what style suits this type of decor best?

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Judithn - I don't claim to have any kind of expertise on this subject but my home is in this style. BC sofas do tend to have exposed wood decorative frames, or large rolled arms. There are many sofas that have wood arms and also regular back cushions (rather than the loose pillow type on the Klaussner sofa). They can be very comfortable - in fact I have one of these.
In my own home I have tried to avoid either a themed or museum look so have incorporated many items that do not strictly belong to the style. To my eye it gives it a fresh, updated appeal, but to others it may look wrong. Perhaps you could incorporate a comfortable sofa that has no strong style and then provide BC style clues in other items of furniture, colors and accessories?

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Judith: I am not sure if you have already bought your sofa...My home decor is in BC and I used a leather sofa that looks worn it has old looking brads on the back and they accent the front it looks great with my kitchen that I did in palm trees...BC uses alot of globes and trunks along with tropical so the leather in my opinion is a great sofa to use I put banana leaf and red pillows on it I love it...Happy hunting....Also if there is anyone still looking to do there MBR in BC check out hgtv.com color splash they did a master in BC IT WAS AWSOME

RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Hi All,
I've really enjoyed reading this thread including visiting all the helpful links and looking at the pictures. I am getting ready to completely redecorate a home we are moving in to and I am sold on the West Indies look.

Has anyone carried the look into their kitchen? Also, has anyone done any painting with accent colors, I have a 2-story wall with a stone fireplace that runs floor to ceiling in the middle that I would like to paint with an accent color?

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

I love this thread too. If i only could learn how to post pics. I did my bedroom in border of palm trees and wall covering in a white with mottled look. the wall behind my bed is a dark green wallpaper, but alas. i just bought new bedding at penny's in a lime green and dark green and chocolate brown, which seems to be the in colors now. Purchased new palm tree pics, the ones i took down had palm trees with too much red in it. But, taking the pics down you can see where the sun faded the wallpaper. I am researching new bedroom furniture as i have not replaced mine of 35 years.
I am 58. My newely remodeled kitchen is awaiting new curtains in a black background with greens in the beach chair, beach umbrella and palm trees. Can't wait to see it. They get hung on saturday. For the kitchen, I bought a pedestal counter height table with a palm tree back in a dark magahogony, nice contrast with the spice color of my kitchen cabinets, the granite when i picked it out gave me the feeling of looking at the sand at the beach, browns with a sprnkling of black. I bought lime green square dishes at pier 1 along with wood
placemats and green stripe with brown cloth napkins and jeweled green napkin ring all at pier 1 and a few more accessories in green and brown.,My den has a gold couch which i added chocolate brown pillows, really gave it pizzazz, along with green pillows with gold palm fronds on them. A dark brown area rug for under the ottoman which also serves as cocktail table, new pictures need to go up and i will be moving into the living room to get that up to date too. I am awaiting word from this hawaiian shop if i can still get this fabric that is beige and soft brown with fronds in beige that will go on my old couch which is framed in brown wicker on the arms. I love my old dining room set because it has cane backs, but my friends told me to get rid of it because it is old fashioned, it's distressed honey brown wood, simple style and fits the area very well, and what i have seen looks cheap and over sized, maybe find out the cost of refinishing it.
I have been on my computer on the garden web forum since this summer especially the appliance and kitchen forum, and now i love and hate this part..the decorating, i am a libra and i can't decide forever on anything, I shop all the time now and forever buying and bringing stuff back as i see how it will look in my rooms. I have never had a totally decorated room all at once so this is my quest, now that i know my style which,is coastal and tropical.
Whew! that was a long recital. sorry.

RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

I love this thread! Many thanks to everyone for keeping it going. My question is: does anyone have advice on British West Indies inspired kitchens for an open floor plan? I am remodeling soon and was wondering what types of look and materials in countertops and cabinets would be most consistent with the overall BC look. Has anyone seen any photos of kitchens in houses with this style? I am wondering if Sis3's BC fabulous style extends to her kitchen?! Many thanks to anyone who can help.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Thank you for the great compliment, earthangelmama! I hope my kitchen choices don't disappoint you.

There is nothing historically accurate about our home so, as in the rest of the house, I chose to give the BC style merely a nod in the kitchen. For us this means the cabinets have a dark stain similar to the dark hardwood floors and the dark furniture close by. I kept the existing stone look porcelain floor tiles and chose a very light granite. There are plantation shutters and the counter stools have woven rattan backs. I wanted a very functional cook's kitchen so I have a stainless steel range but all the other appliances have paneled doors.

On the whole I don't think that anyone seeing a photo of the kitchen would immediately think "BC", but I do believe that the kitchen flows easily with the rest of the house.

 o
RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

Thank you for responding, Sis3. I was hoping you would! I had been planning to look for shutter-front cabinets as pictured in the link below, but after reading your post, I realized that if I just use plantation shutters on my three windows in the kitchen, I can get the look for probably a lot less. Many thanks!

Any other thoughts about countertop surfaces? Any pictures, anyone?

By the way, if you click on the fourth picture on the Welcome page of the link below, you will see an amazing room. I think it's my favorite living room of all I have seen!

Many thanks to all for keeping this post alive!

RE: Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

A few pieces of rattan or bamboo furniture can ramp up this look. I also like golds and tans for walls that are trying to head B.C. While ceiling fans with palm blades can help keep it going, many of us have our ceiling fans already and don't want to lock the fan into a particular style. Throw a rattan table into a corner, add a large fern or a palm frond in a jar, maybe even some carved wooden animals on a table top and you have a bit of a start, even without buying all new furniture.
