Different size crown moulding?

Our house is 2 storey with approx 2000 sq ft. Most rooms have 8' to the ceiling. The family room, formal living and dining room and foyer are open all the way up to 17' high.

Someone gave him the idea of a super wide crown moulding. Now DH has an obsession with an 8" wide crown moulding (8" total which would a combination of two strips to arrive at that width) and wants in throughout the entire house.

I feel that 8" crown moulding will be too much for the 8' high ceiling areas. But he says we can go with two different sizes for the two areas. 17' ceiling with 8" crown moulding. And the 8' ceiling with 6" crown moulding. I think that having two different sizes will look odd.

I have different crown molding profiles & sizes throughout my house. Any rooms that have continuous walls have the same crown molding. We have a 2 story foyer & living room w/ a large crown molding. My DR has a different size & profile. The kitchen & family room have a third size & profile. First floor master bedroom has a fourth as it has a tray (ed) ceiling.
6" could be a bit big for 8ft ceilings. I think it would depend on the profile.

I think it would be fine to have the wider molding at the 17 ft height. I think the lower ceilings should have the usual size.
