Baseboard size

The baseboards on the first floor of my house are looking pretty beat and are a different color than the wood floors we're planning to install, so I'd like to replace them when the floors are done. We have 8 ft ceilings. Is a 5.25 inch basboard going to look disproportionate? The space is open between rooms, but I don't want to make the ceilings seem too low. We have 3.25 inch baseboards now and I think they look thin. Does an inch or so either way make a noticeable difference?

We have 8' ceilings as well and broke the rules a bit and went with 7 1/2" baseboards. I'm fine with them! We have 5" in the basement and they're great with 8' too

Here's a pic showing the 71/2" running down length of hall....

I think the 5.5 would look great. You can go higher if you want. Even the 7 1/2 look proportionate.

Our new build has 10 ft ceilings. We planned on 8" but now I'm thinking of doing 12 or more.

I think you will be fine. We have 9ft ceilings and had 3 1/2in baseboards. After doing hardwoods I installed 5 1/4in moulding and added shoe moulding. The bottom of the wainscot is also 5 1/4in as well. Now I wish I would have gone a little bit larger

I have 7 1/2 ft ceilings with 7" baseboards (including trim on top), LOVE it. Gives a sense of elegance.
