Details of how to post photos, questions

I want post some pictures of my dining room to ask for decorating help. I visited the FAQs but could not find the answer. Could someone fill me in?

I canÂt post from a file on my computer, right? It has to be an Internet hosting site?

I have a Picasa account set up. It asks if I want it Private or Public. Do I have to select public to be able to have my pictures viewable here? IÂd rather not have strangers trolling my photosÂbut that doesnÂt apply to Gardenweb people!

How large should the file size be? I have Photoshop Elements. Does everyone re-size (or reduce resolution) their pictures one at a time before uploading?

Thanks!

This took me awhile too. I didn't use Picasa but Tiny Pic; it was easy once I figured it out. I just posted this in another thread too so I copied and pasted:

    1. Go to www.tinypic.com

    2. Select the photo from your computer using the browse button.

    3. On the drop down for resize select "Website/Email"

    4. Check the box for "send it via email" so you can keep track of the links later and enter your email or don't if you'd rather not have them have your email (though I've yet to get spam from them)

    5. Hit upload and it will take you to a page with a bunch of links for you to copy, IMPORTANT: choose HTML for websites! NOT message board or email. Copy the link from the box and paste it into your post.

    6. We then marvel at your mad decorating skillz!

Here are some much simpler instructions.

Right click an image and select "copy image location" from the menu that pops up.

Enter this code in a message (you will remember this in time). I'm putting extra spaces in so the code will show up. Remove all spaces except the ones between "img" and "src".

And yes, you need to make your photo albums public. Everyone kind of forgets that those of us here on Garden Web ARE the public! If you want to put family shots in an album for only your friends and family to see, make those private. You will then need to email a password to your friends and they will need to remember it to view. Personally, I think it's way too much trouble, so I just don't put anything private on the net.

Jeanninepc99 gave you some simple and perfect instructions for putting your photo in a message here. If you do the img src enclosed in brackets thing, that she explained, and you have it in your post, when you hit 'preview message' your picture will show and you will know you've done it right!

Ok, I just tried itÂjeannineÂs instructions.

No luck. When I right click on an image, the menu shows "copy" or "Copy shortcut", not "copy image" location. I have a PC, if that makes a difference. Clicking copy leads to nothing, I canÂt paste it. Copy shortcut gives me a code, but it ends in that little symbol you see below.

    <a href="http://..."; target="_blank"><img src="http..." border="0" alt="[a brief description]"></a>

replace http://... and http... with the url of the image location.

IÂm sorry, IÂm not sure what you meanÂis that several different ways of doing it? Or do you mean, just delete the

    http://

    part?

It's easier to just use photo bucket, for posting pics. I use Picasa also but for posting I like photo bucket..

In my message above, where I wrote

replace http://... and http... with the url of the image location.

I mean, copy the entire url of the image, including http:// in the first instance and http in the second instance.

If you want to point to an image on an existing web site, right click on the image in your browser. From the drop down menu, click Copy Image Location. That will give you the url of the image. replace the http:// with what you've copied and also replace the http with what you've copied.

If you want to point to one of your images, upload the image to a hosting site, like photobucket, and follow their instructions.

I'm another trying to figure this out. I keep all my pictures in Windows Photo Gallery. I can easily copy and send pictures in email. But when I right click a picture, I don't get a CIL, but it allows me to simply "copy."

To bad we can't do that here.

I tried TinyPic following the instructions above, and it has been very easy. No need to upload them to another site first. If I had to do that first it would not get done. TinyPic uploads them right from any location on your computer. I go through my pictures first and figure out which number picture to use and what folder it is in, otherwise I might not know where to find it when I click in the Browse button in TinyPic. And despite the name, it does not have to be tiny! You are given a choice of which one to use on the Upload page, and I have been picking Message Board. There is a Default setting but that is too big for forums and you have to scroll to see it.

Please help me too. I have a laptop without a mouse so there is no right clicking I can do. I have all my photos in photobucket and when it was GW all I had to do was click and copy/paste it to the message box and then preview it and it would appear as the image. Now all I can get it to do is show the link or letters of the picture. Also, is there no way to preview your message first before submitting? Thank you in advance.

You will probably need to start a new thread. No one will see this old one. I only got notification because I am the OP. Sorry I can't help you directly, I don't use photobucket. I have used nothing but Tiny Pic since this thread started, though have not tried anything since the website overhaul.

I have no idea how I just did this but well here it is. Just a test but also one of my favorite rooms. This sure is a lot harder than in GW days. Perhaps I just don't have the hang of it yet which is an understatement, : / Thanks for the help!

I simply cannot figure this out. It will work one time and not the next. I'm done....two hours is enough time. I'm not computer illiterate and was able to post all manner of photos on the GW site but this one is giving me a migraine. I accomplished it once and cannot duplicate it. Oh well.... keep getting error messages from Houzz.

gr8daygw, posting photos is different here on houzz; they would prefer we upload photos from our computer, and copying/pasting the link from Photobucket into the text box only results in a link, not the image, as you have discovered.

But there is a workaround that allows you to use the Direct code (not the HTML code) from photobucket, if you are not using a Mac. Here are some more recent threads that discuss posting photos since the conversion to houzz, and they may help you get caught up. (We are all still trying to figure these things out, you're not alone.)

Thanks so much. That's very helpful, apparently I was trying to do the impossible, it's good to know it wasn't just me!!! I am using a Mac OS X Notebook.

Glad that helped. I forgot to say, there's also no preview here on houzz. We can't use html anymore and that was mostly why I liked preview on GW, to check for errors in links. But it still makes me a little worried to click Submit with no preview! You can edit for a while if you need to though (little gray pencil upper right corner of your new post.)

Thanks so much. I have been reviewing mine and just deleting while trying to figure this out. The edit button is a good thing : )

Ok, so here is how I got this to come out as a photo using my MacBook Pro. I made a new idealbook for photos from my Notebook on Houzz. Then I clicked on the Houzz Photo option in the message box and chose the new idealbook (Photos from my Notebook) and the photo came up and offered the option to "insert" which I clicked on and then it appeared in the message box. OMG, what a mental workout but if I can remember what I did, I think this will be fine in the long run. Basically, the new idealbook on Houzz takes the place of a photo hosting site such as photobucket. At least that is my opinion right at this moment. If it fails to work next time, then it's back to the drawing board.

Hi - on an iMac here - I just click & drag a photo to my desktop - either from the web or iPhoto or any other folder on my computer, then click the photo link in the comments box & browse the desktop, select the file & click 'open' - & done. (just remember that photo will be inserted where the cursor was last - you can remove a misplaced photo by clicking @ the right side of it & using the delete button on your keyboard) When I'm finished, I put the desktop image in the trash or return it to its folder.

BTW, you cannot click/drag photos from the messages here @ houzz( & on some other sites as well) - I use screen capture if I want to save & reuse any of them. If you want the steps for that, just ask...

Thank you carolb. I'm on a PC but I could not figure out how to delete a misplaced photo for the life of me! I started the whole post over again when I managed to put the photo in the wrong spot. I appreciate the good info!

Why are there brown, dried-looking "joints" in the middle of healthy, green branches on my TG cactus? Thank you.
