I think abandoned places are so interesting. Even the creepy ones. I enjoyed this article and thought I'd share (link attached). All I can think is-- save them!! So sad to see beautiful buildings rot away.

The comments section has several more examples.

Very cool. Can't believe Ive never heard of Bannerman castle, and it looks so cool and is only about 45 minutes from us. Now thanks to your post I think we will try to visit there in the spring. They do great kayak trips to the island.

    thanks!

There is a nice little cruise that goes from Newburgh past bannerman island down to West Point and back too. A few nice places to eat on the water in Newburgh.
I am surprised it made the list!

Wow, thanks! Love seeing some of those vibrant colors remaining on the interiors of the buildings.

In the comments someone posted this link to pics of one of the mansions...they are quite incredible...in case you missed it.

There's a lovely little estate near me that has been vacant for at least 10 years, and it's so sad, but fascinating, to watch nature take it over.

I'm from that city where Bannerman's Island is--Beacon, NY. Pete Seeger lived right up the hill from the castle. The town has been undergoing a revitalization for the past 20 years ever since the DIA art museum opened. It became a popular spot with NYC daytrippers and now Main St. is full of antique stores, trendy little shops, and restaurants. It's still got all its historic brick buildings from the turn of the century. They want to restore the incline railway up Mt. Beacon--"the world's steepest incline"--that's been closed since the 70s. There used to be a casino up top that was popular in the 1930s--dancing and dining, not gambling.

There's a cool FB page called Abandoned Hudson Valley with excellent photos. I've seen several photos of Halcyon Hall.

I don't know as I haven't lived in NY since 1981 and my family has left the area. I keep up with Beacon on their FB page. We used to go to Blue Mountain Lake in Peekskill and always made it a point to find Dick's Castle amongst the trees. I never knew anything about it, but I did find a recent article.

I recommend going to youtube and searching under "urbex" and watching some really cool stuff; the derelict Belgian and French chateaux are amazing, some of the German vids as well. Several great Urbexers in north america; TikiTrex is my favorite, and she has a ton of vids mainly in Canada, but I think some in the US.

The Bennett College property was recently sold to developers who are going to take down the building and create a park. The town of Millbrook seems pleased with the plan. I really don't think the buildings could be restored.

Mtn, cool! I hope you'll give us a full report if you go this spring.

Casey, oh my goodness, I will spend hours looking at Urbex. Maybe I will become an Urbexer! :-)

Yesterday I couldn't find on my phone a photographer's Facebook page I follow that takes pictures of abandoned you-name-it. I've linked an image search, but you can find him on Facebook and "like." Here are a couple examples of his work:

The Boardman House in Connecticut was abandoned for several
years and is now after ten years of renovations a Bed & Breakfast.
