| Mary Emmerling's American Country Cottages is a great little book. I happened to pick it up at a local thrift store and I love it. I had already been incorportaing some ideas found in this book into our little cottage. Here are a couple of pictures of our humble cottage's kitchen before and after we opened it up to the utility room. It was a dream come true, something we had planned and talked about for years and I LOVE it. It has truly made a difference. I enjoy washing dishes looking out the back window into our secret garden, before, washing the dishes in the kitchen I had a wall over the sink, BORING. I'll post a picture of my view now. DH was in the US Navy and worked in the 'scullery' for awhile while in bootcamp, where dishes were washed, etc. A 'scullery' in a home is a small room off the kitchen, where dishes are washed. The new part of our kitchen is the 'scullery' and to me it's a treasure, light filled and happy. We've also laid Canyon Oak looking laminate flooring in the kitchen, hall and living room. Still have the bedroom to do yet. Every little bit we do makes a difference. We are also decluttering as we go. Our home is small, mortgage is paid off. We have much to be thankful for. Learning to make things work with our less than 700 sq ft of space is always a challenge. More pictures later. Happy Decorating ~ FlowerLady ![]() Plum Cottage kitchen before

| I'm glad someone is enjoying this thread! I agree that's your decor and I hope you'll be posting some pics here whenever you're ready. I love what you're doing with your home. Here are some more pics...
| OMG!!! LOVE EVERYTHING! OCEANA I would love to come sip tea with you and look through your inspiration books but this is the next best thing to it and I'll take it!!! I am on my way out the door right now but I have questions. You are the bomb! How long have you been collecting these photos? ok gotta run but BRB! |
| MsJay you are always welcome at my house! But I don't think I own a single decorating book. Everything is on my computer. I've been saving them for a few years. And I agree with you -- there are SO many pretty pictures there. Almost every one of them looks like a place I'd love to curl up. To me this style is so interesting. There's so much to look at and it seems very friendly and cozy. Anyway, I'd rather visit at your house -- it's adorable! I'm in rather a dilemma here because the decorating styles I like would fit well in your house, but they are "fighting" with my house. What in the world do you do with a late 70s tract house with great big wide windows anyway? I have yet to figure it out! Furniture from the year my house was built doesn't do it for me... I'd just look "outdated." The pics above, OTOH, look timeless. |
| Oceanna, do you really not have any decorating books? No magazines? Don't tell my DH or he'll make me get rid of my 6000 lbs of mags and books and keep my collecting on the laptop. I've also just come to the realization that cottage style is where it's at and your pics are a real inspiration. Love em. I'm trying to do a sort of minimalist cottage look (if that's not too much of an oxymoron for you) and I could see it working in a tract house too. Lots of light colours a few big pieces of down stuffed slipcovered furniture and lots of floral cushions. Throw in some striped cotton rugs, some over sized black framed mirrors or pieces of abstract art and you're set. Some of the pics above have that sort of pared down cottage look I'm talking about and I think it would really work in a house like yours. Thanks so much for posting so many luscious rooms. I find it funny to see some of my inspiration pictures I cut out of mags years ago pop up in these threads. That red and cream kitchen was one of my 1st kitchen tear sheets and I still remember that the owner worked for Ralph Lauren. |
| I love the pictures Oceanna. Thank you for sharing. I love looking at Cottage pictures. |
| Budge ~~ I have some very old magazines. I've never scanned anything in from them. They're mostly Country Victorian and Victorian. I should look them over one of these days and probably toss a lot of them, maybe create a file of ripped out pages I save. But no books. I'm so happy that I could help inspire you with these pics! I love the pic with the pale green wall and the white flowers on each side of the mirror, and some of those with several hanging mirrors also look pretty minimalist to me. I will be very interested in seeing what you do. I'll bet it will be striking and gorgeous. I'm not sure what to do with my house. My LR & DR furn is all dark, and since I just paid for 3 pieces to be rebuilt and reupholstered they're staying. They SO don't go with my LR. Can I "turn the corner" and do cottage in my kitch, and other rooms when going dark Vict in the LR? I'm very confused over here. Lynn~~ I'm so glad you're enjoying them. Thanks for letting me know. It makes it worth my time to do these. ~~ More pics to come, so keep watching! |
| Very nice pictures! I love the cottage look in most of these pictures. Oy, okay, not the one that looked like someone just heaped a bunch of stuff on a table. lol. |

| Thanks so much for these photos! I'm really lovin' these cottage style kitchens you've included -- especially the one with the cream white uppers and red lowers and the white one with the wood wide plank ceiling and big clock. Nice! |
| Playfish ~~ I'm glad you're enjoying the pics too. I figure nobody is going to love all of them and they do cover quite a range. Some could be argued as being country, or country French, or more just antique, or shabby chic, or pottery barn, or whatever. I figured if I put up a fairly wide array there would be something for everyone who likes this type of style -- and some that wouldn't be liked as much. Marthavila ~~ You're so welcome! I will keep posting them for a while, so keep checking back. You may find others you love. ~~ Please everyone, feel free to add to these any time! Here are some more:

| Oceanna, was sitting here going through the pictures saying wow, wow, wow and came to a darling little room with a blk & wht stripe sofa. Was sooooooooo flattered that you thought it was cute enough to post. I had posted it in response Only one person commented on it so I figured it was Thank you so much for thinking different! Also ended up being my favorite room! |
| Flyingflower ~~ I'm so glad you're enjoying the pics. They come from all over the web. I keep folders and when I see pics I like, I just save them to the folders with various headings. I've collected them over time and have no recollection of specifically where I got them, and of course the credit goes to the creator of each fabulous room; they are presented here merely as inspiration. You might try collecting pics too. Sue ~~ Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed the result of my efforts. I hope you got some good ideas for your own home. Yvette ~~ You're welcome! Enjoy! I figure that's what the Gallery should be for; it should be stuffed with eye candy and I hope more folks will contribute pics to the wonderful threads here. It's a great place for us to use as reference and inspiration, I think. Wooderlander ~~ Thanks for letting me know. I'm glad you folks aren't tired of them. As for me, I was starting to go crosseyed and I've been advertised to death with flashing signs at ImageShack. Nice to read it was worth it though. :-) Happyintexas ~~ Thanks! No more cottage decor pics right now. I have pics in other categories I'll post some other time. I hope you'll all post pics too. Love-my-lilhome ~~ Is that room with the black and white striped sofa yours? It's one of my very favorites! That sofa is adorable and just makes the room, and you accessorized just perfectly around it. I'm sorry you didn't get responses when you posted your pic before. That's happened to me too and it really made me wonder if I had bad taste or something. I can say decisively in your case you have wonderful taste! Out of style? Not a chance. That will never go out of style. It's a classic. I'm so glad you posted to take credit for it -- you certainly deserve a LOT of credit! Now I want to see more of your house! |
| I am in the middle of "fixing up" my kitchen and there is one kitchen photo on here that depicts the look I want. The photo with the craftsman style cabinets and big clock near the very top of this post (hopefully the link will work). I have not put the hardware on my cabinets yet and I was wondering about the hardware in the mentioned photo. The one with the bin handles. can you tell me what is on the doors? It looks like some kind of latch. I have decided ONCE AGAIN to bite the bullet and stop being so dang cheap and get what I want but I HAVE to look for a deal. LOL. can someone tell me where I can get those type of latches and bin handles in one place? I have checked eBay, Craigs list and a few other places and I have not seen those latches ANYWHERE. Only in Oceana's beeee-oooooo-tiful photos. any help pointing me in the right direction will help! Thanks. |
Here is a link that might be useful: the inspiration photo
| The latches are darling. My first thought was eBay and you already tried that. House of Antique Hardware on the web and I'm sure other places but they may be pricey as all get-out. Do you have a salvage yard within driving distance? You may need to post this question to the main board where more folks will see it. Oh, and your link worked just fine. That's an adorable kitchen. I really hope you can get the look you want. You're off to a great start. I love your painted panelling and your tile backsplash. |

| Well I am the original poster of this ? and then there was no response for so long I went elsewhere today I finally was able to get back to this thread although I looked for it several times over the last year anyways.... Oceanna thank you for sharing all your pics I have saved many to my inspiration file. 8-) My home is comming along slowly but surely and I have found many cottage decor books in the clearance sections of Barnes and NOble or at Half Price books if anyone is interested . |
| Good to see you RaNae...I've checked your MSN site a few times, but no Ewe sightings :^) Hope things are going well for you! Would love to see new pictures when you have a moment! Jaybird |
| Jaybird, you are so welcome. I have to admit that of all of the threads I've posted this is the thread that has the most "reachable" (for most of our budgets) pretty, pretty rooms. So many of these pictures warm the heart and put a smile on the face. RaNae, oh you don't know how often I've thought about you, and wondered what you would think if you saw this thread now, feeling bad that I was too late to answer you. I'll bet you were surprised to see the changes, huh? I'm delighted that you found it and you're still needing/appreciating the inspiration. Please feel free to add to this thread if you have good pics to share. This is such a pretty style of decorating, and I'm tossing in the country, French country, back woods, shabby chic, and so on -- these go by so many different names and I've just lumped them all together. If it's casual and pretty, I stuck it here. Hope that's what you wanted. Here are a few more delights... 442. 443. 444. 445. 446. 447. 448. 449. 450. 451. 452. 453. 454. 455. 456. 457. 458. 459. |

| RaNae, where are your promised pictures? Eagerly waiting. :-) Joanna, you're very welcome, and please add your pictures to any thread in the gallery where they fit. We all love to see them! Budge1 -- I used to have a very expensive down filled couch from the fancy store in town, and the darned feathers still came through and poked us. Hated it. Budgiemom (I'm a parrot mom too!), you're very welcome! These are just pics I collected. If you have collected any, or take some of your own you're proud of, feel free to add them! Here's some more eye candy for you all... As usual, if YOU designed any of these rooms, please speak up and take credit, folks! :-) |
