This is our inspiration FP from the Napoleon FP site. It just so happens this is in a Timber Frame like ours.

Here's our simple fireplace. The best we could do with as close as the windows are to the fireplace. The hearth is soapstone.

Whaaaattttt, no mantles with guns as the focal point ;^)...
Ahhhhhhh DH's are like Church's Chicken....gotta' love 'em!!
We have a huge antique brick fireplace with wood panels above and a rough cut cedar mantle. Just above the mantle is an antique rifle that DH canNOT be persuaded to part with! I would like to use a mirror above that (10' ceiling, 6' mantle), but the only thing it would reflect is the ceiling fan :^( Yikes!!!
I love all of your pictures though, and I keep hoping that someone will have the same problem and we can at least commiserate with one another!
Thank you Oceanna for all of your time (and talent) to post these many, lovely pictures.

Here's our fireplace. Not very fancy, but we like it. Just a little trivia - in the left hand corner, the large picture on the landing is an enlarged shot of our post-Katrina neighborhood. My husband insisted that we hang it somewhere where everyone could see when they come into our new house. Definitely a conversation piece....

I would really like some ideas of a wall with a fireplace along side of a large TV. I would prefer not to put the TV over the fireplace.

Here is my rather large fireplace. Just out of sight, there are two built in benches coming out from the wall on either side of the fireplace. The two chairs just fit in between the benches. We considered taking them out when we laid the wood floors but at the time my kids used to dance on them every night and we didn't have the heart to! Also, the logs are not that red but I "auto corrected" the photo on my computer because it was so dark.

Here's our new FP which we are sooo proud of. We are only the third home in Oklahoma who has built a Rumford FP. They're custom made by real masons, they built it here on the spot. The inside of the wood fp is the Rumford design, which Count Rumford invented in the late 1700s or early 1800s. We have a picture of him near it. lol. This is a HUGE FP but it will give off a lot of heat if need be. Ignore the stuff on the mantel, all my accessories are boxed up. This is the FP with a bench on the side right after it was built.

    Our first fire:

    The Count, lol:

This feels a little anti-climactic after what came before, but here's my stained glass fireplace screen--a gift from my son and his fiancee.

After that picture was taken I changed the look of the mantel.

Susan, I love your FP screen. I bet your room is so cozy at night with a fire in there. It's amazing those can stand up to heat. They are so pretty.

Okleyok - do you remember the name of your paint color? I love it's warmth.

  • alisande

Dani, thanks, but I have to correct that impression. The screen won't stand up to heat, so you can't use it with a fire. (I have a metal screen for that.) The light you see behind it comes from two small light bulbs.

I do, however, burn wood regularly in my woodstove. :-)

WOW!!! Fabulous collection of pictures. This will be a helpful resource for when I convert my garage and install some kind of a fireplace. Was thinking of electric, but a Franklin style would provide more heat. Your pictures are great oceanna...thanks for such an eclectic collection. It really makes me think more about my project.

    Ha! Nicole.

Imagine my surprise when I was looking for fireplace inspiration and saw your last picture.

It's a pic of the model home in our neighborhood. We built the same model, two years ago. Thought we'd save a few bucks and finish the fireplace after we moved in. You can guess the rest...plummeting real estate values, wage cut, etc. They ended up selling that model, fully furnished, for $150,000 below cost. *sob* :)

A few that I have worked on or built outright.
Masons get the credit for most of this except the little cherry mantel shelf.
