playstation game compatibility?

I pulled a 10 year old boy's list this year from the giving tree. His list does not indicate which version of the console he uses. Is there an easy way to know whether a game works across, say playstation, playstation 2, and 3? I'm going to assume this child does not have version 4.

I'm up to here with technology and have no patience for deeply investigating backwards compatibility, upgrades, etc. I'm looking for easy. The clothes were pretty easy. Then again, maybe I just have no clue what a 10 year old thinks is dorky and unwearable.

I found this link, which talks about Playstation 3 and which versions of that can play games from versions 1 and 2: https://support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/232

Basically, there's no way you will be able to know what version of a game to buy.

However, they do mention an on-line store that games can be downloaded from. And they have gift cards--see the link below. Just be sure, if you order a gift card online, that you are ordering a physical gift card and not just the code to enter into the Playstation. I'm not sure how that would work as a gift.

Maybe a gift card from GameStop would be easier.
Through Sony he would have to set-up an account..
Where as with a gift card he can walk out with the game and his parents would also see his purchase.
