Change airline seat?

dedtired

Here's the deal. I am fling overnight to Frankfurt (eight hours) on Lufthansa Airlines. I got a seat in the exit row. Lots of extra legroom although the tray table is one of those weird ones that flips up from the arm thingy. But legroom -- great, huh? No one to recline into my lap. I can actually bend over and grab something from near my feet.

Of course there is a catch. You saw it coming. I think it's a deal breaker and I am most likely going to try to change it. Here it is -- it's right next to the bathrooms. Ugh. People coming and going (literally) and lining up next to me. Not worth the leg room -- agreed?

    I would keep the legroom.

That's a tough one, I have very long legs and so I would love the leg room, but I also have a very sensitive nose. I once was seated near the bathroom on a plane and I was really impacted by the smells. I would probably switch as long as i could get another aisle seat.

Who cares if people are standing next to you? Unless you're reading porn. You can get up and walk around too. Lufthansa was good, unlimited free beer. NOT agreed to switching seats.

I've flown Lufthansa twice to Germany. It is a long flight, usually overnight so mostly people are trying to sleep. Last time I was in the last row, right near the bathroom and food prep areas and was not bothered a bit.

Change your seat. Take 2 Excedrin PM and wake up in Frankfort. I was near a stinky bathroom once and it was dreadful.

If you're trying to sleep, the banging of the lav doors might annoy you.

When you get a chance, I would love to hear more about your trip to Germany.

Thanks. Yeah, the smells and banging doors could be a problem. IDK what to do. Would love to have some room. Anyway, I am only changing planes in Frankfurt and then continuing on to Florence. I have a 3.5 hour layover, so I should be able to tell you anything you want to know about the airport.

Are you sure you're near a bathroom *or* near the staircase to the bathrooms? I've known multiple people who flew Lufthansa and they raved about the bathroom situation. They were a level below the regular seats, a whole row of cubicles, and very nice.

Also, I don't think exit row seats recline. Will that be an issue for you? Losing that 1/2 inch of recline, ahhh now that's better, is making people a bit crazy lately according to recent news reports.

Go to seatguru.com ... they will tell you exactly what the situation is for that seat on that flight, and show the best alternates.

You never know how the bathroom situation will turn out. Could be nothing, or,... if they serve eggplant curry.... (see the real estate listing post!)

Well, Seatguru doesn't mention not reclining but it does say that is near the bathroom. I doubt the plane has a lower level for the bathrooms. It doesn't look that way on the diagram of the plane. I wish it did!

Bathroom doors don't bang. They are folding doors that slide into place. Bathrooms are also cleaned and generally don't smell.

I'd keep the legroom without a doubt.

I have flown overseas at least 25 times round trip. Only 1 round trip was a challenge and that was because of the airline. It was Not Lufthansa.

Oh Detired! You were talking about Tuscany and now it seems you're doing it. How exciting. Now I'd love to hear about your Italy trip.

Yes, I figured I better do it before it's too late. I will be sure to post a trip report. It's still a few weeks away.

Take oil of peppermint and dab it on a tissue and put it under your nose. Refresh as necessary.

We were seated in front of the bathrooms on a flight to Amsterdam, that in and of itself wasn't so bad, nothing horrid happened. The miserable thing about it was that the seats did not recline because they were backed up to the bulkhead. I'd definitely change them if that's the case.

I've sat on planes and trains by bathrooms, and believe me, for a long flight like that, I'd opt for leg room every time.

    Peppermint, huh. I'll remember that.

Actually the bathrooms and bulkhead are in front of me, not behind me, so the seat does recline. I had one of those nonreclining seats on a short flight once and even then it was annoying. It was just so bolt upright!

Really, Annie? Maybe I'll just stay where I am and hope for the best.

Same as us as sweet-tea. Five and a half hours to L.A., last row, seats did not recline. The bathrooms were behind us, but it was not a factor in crowds or smell. The worst thing was the seats were such a small pitch and did not recline at all.

I wouldn't change but I also have long legs. Take an eye mask and enjoy the extra room. Since you've already checked Seatguru and know the seat does recline, I would keep it. The lines won't build up most likely until you are almost ready to land. Also your window-seat mate won't have to wake you up to get out of their seat (hopefully they can just climb over your sleeping self and notdisturb you).

Earplugs and eye mask. I'd take the leg room on a long flight.

Ambien. That's the ticket. Stretch out my legs, put peppermint oil under my nose, wear my eye mask, ear plugs and goofy travel pillow and wake up eight hours later.
