Probably a dumb question, but what do you do with old mattresses? We have 3 twin sized mattress that are waaay past their prime, and want them OUT. I don't know how to dispose of them.

Usually your trash service will have the capability to do a special large item curbside pick-up for free that you would need to schedule with them. You can take them to your local dump which usually charges an access fee of some sort. You can pay a haul away service like 1-800-Got-Junk to take them away for you.

Arggh. I didn't proofread very well. I don't want to get ride, but get rid. I'll call my trash service and see if they will pick them up.

If you are replacing them, the mattress store will haul them for free.

In NYC you have to wrap them in plastic and then they will be picked up at bulk pick up. If not you will be fined b/c of the bed bug problem. Just did this today. |

If you post them for free on craigslist, someone will want them no matter how old they are. I was honest in my description of our horrid old mattress and someone sleeping on the floor was very happy to have it.

We just got rid of the mattresses in my dd's room two weeks ago. Bulk pickup has to be scheduled and we didn't have a place to store them so dh took ours to the dump.

You might check to see if there is a Freecycle group in your area ...
Here is a link that might be useful: Freecycle link

I ended up contacting my trash company through their website and had a response from them on Monday. I was able to arrange for them to be picked up on Tuesday. I hadn't realized it would be so easy. I imagined that I'd have to borrow a truck, take them to the dump (wherever it is) and pay to dump them. The freecycle and Craislist are also good suggestions, but just wanted them gone and was willing to pay for the removal.
