Need help with needlepoint

I can't find a needlepoint forum so I am trying here!

I bought a Tapestry Tent canvas and am now wondering how to go about choosing stitches and yarns. I have been doing all types of needlework for most of my life so I am up to the task. I just don't know how to go about it!

Any help would be great.
