felted wool crafts

I sold 6 recycled wool sweater purses for the holidays. My daughter actually sold most of them at her work, said I could have gotten more than the $25 I was asking.
Anyway, I have bits and pieces left from those sweaters. Yes, I know, phones, ipods, etc. But - has anyone used the felted wool for potholders? Is it heavy enough? How about coasters? Wouldn't you have to put something waterproof on the bottom of the coaster? Guess it would all depend on how thick the piece is, right?

This article doesn't say how well they work, but they certainly look nice - Autumn Design Felted Potholders...for coasters what about gluing the felted pieces onto cut outs of cork?
I have heard the felted purses were very popular this year, congrats on your sales.
