Vinyl armrest repair

The white driver side armrest on my mid-80s GM car is vinyl and cracked (passenger side is pristine). Rather than attempting to use a 'repair' kit, I bought a hunk of hide dyed white and is 2mm thick. I intend to cut a piece to fit the armrest area. That piece will look like the letter D, with the straight side toward the door panel. My concern has to do with the curved side and what I can do with the exposed cut. I'd like to have it look decent at least.
I plan to solvent clean the area, use 3M masking tape over the splits and then contact cement the leather to the area. (should work, right?)
Thanks for any advice
Dave
