bleaching designs on t-shirts

I'm planning on doing this on a couple of new shirts for my granddaughter for her birthday. Has anyone done this before? I'm assuming that I wash then after spraying with the bleach. My question is how do I do this and keep them looking new?

I've seen designs drawn with the bleach pens too that are very nice. Are you going to put a stencil and then spray? I'm not sure what mixture of bleach and water you would use for spraying, and yes I am sure that you wash it right after to stop the bleach.
I think you would just treat it normally.
