What is Heat Set?

Posted by berk (My Page) on

My daughter is painting on a blanket and the paint markers say you need to Heat Set before washing.
Can I throw it in a dryer to set the paint or do I need to iron it?
I would hate for the gift to be given and then washed and all the writing come off it!
Thank you very much.

RE: What is Heat Set?

Difficulty: Easy
Things Youll Need:

* Fabric with fabric paint design.
* Iron, Oven, or Dryer.
* A well ventilated area.

Make sure the paint has completely air dried before applying a heat setting.
There are three methods to heat seat the paint. Choose one in which the area is well ventilated.
Use an iron to heat set the paint. Iron for 3-5 minutes on the reverse side (opposite of the application), with a medium-hot iron. If you are using a delicate fabric, where the heat setting must be lower, remember that your heat time will be longer.
A curing oven. A curing oven. Use a professional oven to heat set the paint. Cure for 1-2 minutes at 300F, or 4 minutes at 250 F.
Use a dryer to heat set the paint. If using a commercial dryer at a medium high temperature for 20-40 minutes. If using a household dryer at a high temperature for 40-50 minutes.
Washing and drying tips. Be sure to let the paint dry for at least 4 days before washing, turn the garment inside out, and wash in cold water only. If you hand wash and drip dry it will increase the durability of the paint.
