Oddie's good advice

maddya

Hello Everyone,

Sweet Oddie had a wonderful idea for me. I am trying to build up what may be necessary for crafting, much the same as certain staples you need for your kitchen pantry. A craft list.

So...I guess I am asking what is the item you fellow crafters find most useful and couldn't do without.

I now know to always be on the outlook for things that can be turned into something special.....at garage sales, and flea markets.....but I am sure I should have certain things always at home.

All ideas or suggestions would be welcome. Thanks Oddie for the suggestion.

With over 45 years of crafting under my belt I have dabbled in just about everything and the top of the list would be.........

Have multiplies of all the basics because you are bound to lose track of the tool you were using last - lol

but seriously - here would be my partial list....

    Scissors - several sizes
pliers - again a couple different kinds
    paddle wire and wire cutters
    utility knives
    clear rulers
    water soluable markers
    regular markers/pencils, ect
several different kinds of glues including hot glue gun
    cutting mats
plastic containers for holding small product (I keep the Stouffers containers that the frozen dinners.entrees come in - they are great for everything
general CLEAR storage containers - I like to SEE my supplies at a glance
a variety of paint brushes - I don't paint that much but they can be used for dusting out nooks and crannies, cleaning out sewing machines and other equipment of dust and scraps

another non craft item I couldn't be without is a rather large glass insert from the older big microwaves before the turntables became standard - I use that for all my hot gluing and regular glue projects

I know I am missing some very obvious things but with this crafty group I know you will get a FULL pantry list. I am anxious to see what other people have so I can add to my craft 'pantry'.....

First you need to decide what 'line' of crafting. Painting, sewing, building birdhouses, clay work, etc. Then you can go to that section in your craft store such as Michaels. they have supplies grouped together in areas so you can see what you may need. Think about where you will work and how you will store your supplies. You will need some containers for sure. Now that is not to say what I did. I just grabbed some stuff on sale that I want interest in at times. I just used plastic bags or cardboard boxes to put it in. I often put stuff in one of my file cabinets in the garage. And in all my moves, I have things buried in storage. So organize at first and keep stuff in tagged containers and it will be so much easier when you get the urge to craft.

    Lynn, Twomonths and minnie,
What a wonderful ideas and suggestions for my new "craft pantry".
And Minnie....some of those things on the list were too funny....precious.
And I do love browsing at Michaels, however until now, never knowing what I should spend some money on.
But you can't imagine how appreciative I am of your replies. It has helped me so much.
You are a great bunch of ladies/crafters indeed.
OH, I all ready have some of those things......makes me feel already like a "true crafter".
    Thanks again.

Maddya - Twomonths got me to thinking about zeroing in on a craft - If you haven't decided yet exactly what you want to do (I still haven't - lol, although sewing is HIGH on my list since I did have a doll clothes business) anyway - a couple of GOOD general craft books will get you started and then you can pick a couple of crafts that you really enjoy. Many crafts are what I call cross-over crafts which involve a few different mediums. The craft books will give you pointers in just about every area along with tools needed - a good book will have a list of tools and tips plus a glossary of terms in a section that will be a BIG help. I was in Micheals just yesterday and noticed that they have a general craft book under their name so you can pretty much know that whatever craft is in the book you can get the supplies in the store.

Minnie - LOVE that list - that pretty much covers it all :D.....

oh my! glad you are getting alot of posting, love that list minnie, dont think I saw that one.
as you can tell alot depends on the kind of crafts you want to do, I have just been lucky to find supplies cheap at yard sales or flea markets, and there for have a variety of supplies on hand, not much of a sewer but I picked up a machine for a few dollars and have it to use when needed, I have a small toster oven for no food iteams, like saltdough, clay or melting beads, saves on your oven! I have a old blender for makeing paper pulp, different glues E6000 , hot glue , tacky and white glue, glue stick for paper, scissors used only for fabric and nothing else, you will collect supplies as you go, as you said you have many iteams on the list, so lets see some photos!

Well, you cannot imagine how wonderful it was to read all your postings and with such good ideas......getting a "craft" book at Michaels is a wonderful idea, in that like you said, all the materials will be there, and will help in zone in on something or things I really would like to do.
You girls are the greatest. AND I mean that so much.
AND Oddie, again thank you for such a wise decision.....post it. And then reading how you got so many good things, cheaply, like a sewing machine for minimal needs, a toaster oven for crafting and such.
I have two appointments at the hospital tomorrow.....that's what it is when you are a cancer survivor, and then off to the craft store.....so exciting...I can't wait.
THEN, the next thing is to get my courage up and post. I owe it to you guys to at least let you see what I make.
    Special girls...that's what you are!

Maddya - craft supplies can be very expensive so look for bargains at Walmart, Michael's, Joann's, AC Moore Craft Stores, etc. There are a lot of times I've waited till after the holidays to get supplies of all types. Use those coupons also. Sign up for Joann's in-home mailer and get a 40% off coupon every two weeks or so. It comes in super handy when buying just about anything. You can also sign up for Michael's and Joann's online newsletter specials and print coupons from your computer. Every little bit helps.

Have fun in whatever craft you do. For me, it gives me peace and serenity and I just love my crafts.

Minnie, now I truly know why our craft rooms get to be such a mess! LOL Wow! What a long list of items, but very clever to do it that way.

Maddya, please don't feel that you need all this at one time--most crafter's just add more as they buy the supplies needed with each project.

My advise: I carry a measuring tape with me when I go to Garage Sales. Never know when you need to measure something and a tape is lighter to carry than a metal tape measure. An item I can't be without is Quick Grab Glue, it really works for just about anything you need to glue and it really is Quick Grab! Just now I'm out and for the life of me I can't remember where I bought it. Walmart does not have it. I'm thinking I found it at Hobby Lobby, but we don't have those stores near me.

Oh I am so happy with this help from everyone. I had hoped to get to Michaels today, but had to have therapy.....the same tomorrow and actually for all this week, but I have posted (tried!) of a couple of things......and will keep trying to improve on how to post so I can share pictures with you. More advice on that would help.
AND certainly, build up my stash as you go, and take advantage of all sales.
This site is good for my spirits.

Well, even with my arm ace-wrapped four times !.....I still managed to go around the house today and see what I may already have and didn't realize, would be good for crafting and I came up with much. Much ribbon, scraps of material, paints......and into hubby's tool box, and there was a ruler, pliers....exacto.....all of this makes me feel good and handle the other "issues" well.
