cleaning and seasoning cast iron

Hi,

I've cooked with cast iron pans for over 25 years, and have always bought them used at garage sales. They're usually already in well-seasoned condition. But I have a couple that have black encrusted stuff on them that doesn't come off with scrubbing. Does anyone know if there's a way to get this off so it's back to cast iron again?! Also, is it easy to season brand new cast iron? It's hard to believe it can be done when you see how it looks when new. But obviously it's doable!

Thanks!
