Baking Stone smells like burning plastic

I preheated my baking stone up to 450 degrees for a loaf of bread (I got a used one from a trusting friend). It smarted smoking and smelling like burning plastic. When I looked at the stone there was a layer of liquid on top the stone that went away very quickly after I took it out of the oven. What is going on? What do I do to get rid of it?

Perhaps your friend put oil on top? or perhaps...shudder....a piece of saraan?
If you can stand the smoke....burn it off....maybe put in on the outdoor grill and heat it up.
Ask your friend what might have been on top.
But my next question....is why did she let you have it? Maybe she did something dumb like try to clean it with oven cleaner??

I agree with lindac. Suspect the stone was contaminated. Hard to say what to do without knowing what it is. Ask your friend what's up and/or get a new one. Don't waste good bread on this one.
