questions about katiec's sweet potato casserole

About what weight do you think would be accurate for the 8 large sweet potatoes? I never know what size produce to expect at the store, and I try to put down a weight for DH who does the shopping.

Would 1/4 inch or even 1/2 inch slices work OK?

Sweet Potato and Caramelized Onion Casserole (katiec)
16 servings
8 large sweet potatoes -- peeled and thinly sliced
8 large onions -- sliced
4 tablespoon olive oil
8 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoon dark brown sugar

Drizzle onions with oil and cook on low heat until caramelized, stirring occasionally.

Layer 1/2 sweet potato slices in a shallow 1 qt. casserole dish. Cover with caramelized onions. Layer remaining sweet potato slices over onions. Dot with butter, sprinkle with brown sugar.
Bake uncovered at 350F for about an hour or until casserole is browned on top.
