Orange Walnuts

Jenn posted a recipe for orange walnuts last Dec 07. I want to know if I substitute pecans for the walnuts?
Thanks.

1 1/2 c sugar
1/4 c orange juice
1/4 c water
1 tsp grated orange peel
2 c walnut halves
Combine sugar, orange juice and water in a saucepan; cook to soft ball stage. Remove from heat; add walnuts. Mix until mixture becomes cloudy and hard to stir. Quickly turn out onto waxed paper or buttered cookie sheet. Seperate into clusters with 2 forks.

You can use anything you want....I would love it with pecans...or almonds!

Soil is a clay loam and is pretty loose. The hard knobbly stuff around the base of the trunk wasn't soil but I'm not sure what it WAS -- guessing some sort of fungal growth or gall? It was roughly 2' in diameter. Interesting about the dwarf root systems. The Golden Delicious would indeed be too big as it would shade one of the only sunny spots where I grow our veggies. Maybe I'll plant a native in that spot. Except for the willows and a couple young sycamores, there are no natives along our urban creek; it's primarily ivy, vinca, jasmine, nasturtium (and morning glory across the creek). I beat it all back and contain it but I don't think I'll ever declare victory as it surrounds us on neighboring properties.

Deanna, I discovered over the weekend that DM, queen of mag scripts, gets Midwest Living. I know your post is now years old but I am in the same position you were. We are trying to get our red oak color nailed down and i am deciding between Special Walnut, Provincial and Early American, or some blend of two. I also don't want it to get to reddish, the way E.A. seems to. What did you end up choosing to do with your floors? Are you happy with the results? Any tips you can give would be great- thanks!

Jessy, what a memory you have!! That's a great idea.... coursely chop them and use them in cookies. Yum! Vicky, I'm glad you like them. Never thought of using pecans, but why not? Three and a half cups of nuts is about right if you want to stretch the recipe and still get a good coating on the nuts.

I've always thought of walnuts and pecans as interchangeable. I'd use either one in a recipe that calls for either one. I've always though of them as very similar nuts.

You can stretch the recipe by doubling the amount of nuts you add. I discovered that one year when I noticed how much syrup was in the bottom of pan, so I added more nuts 1 cup at a time until the syrup was well incorporated and all the nuts were covered with it. Everyone loves these and asks for the recipe or tells me they ate all of them at once. It was my grandmother's recipe and I have no idea where she got it..... sure wish I could ask her.

You're welcome, Teri. Let me know how they turn out and if you have any questions. If you want a thicker coating of the syrup on the nuts, just add a little more nuts than called for. Experiment to see what you like best, but I've doubled the nuts the past 2 years and still get raves from people who want the recipe.
