I am going to get some truffle oil, mix with a few other stuff, and print myself a large glob of white truffle. :-)

Other than pastry making, I just can see that much use in the kitchen.

Very few of the food pictures looked attractive to me - many reminded me of Pringles which aren't as good as regular potato chips, IMO. Puree your food into baby food so it can be piped out and cooked into something?

Some of their examples seemed pretty silly - it's easy and fast to roll out a pizza crust and slap some sauce on it. I doubt that a pipeable dough would have the same texture and chewyness compared to a rolled pizza crust.

3D printers have their uses, but I'll keep them away from my food - especially if the results look like that.

I could see how this might appeal to someone that is more interested in playing with their food than actually cooking something that one would want to eat.

Not something I would be interested in. I agree with Cloud, nothing looked appetizing or attractive.

I dunno. Those shapes looked kind of interesting. Not as something to eat, but as a serving mechanism or display piece. Something to add to ice sculpture, sugar displays, hollowed out gourds and melons, seashells, etc. I think the potato stars were more attractive and appealing, as dishes, than the same thing in shiny stainless would be.

You could also make the kind of sweets that usually takes a long time for a pastry chef to make like chocolate Eiffel towers, sugar cups, etc. Certainly could be useful for making Easter candy.

Definitely for catering. I can't imagine wanting one at home.

Though this is the first step to a full on Star Trekian replicator. That would be pretty swift. Especially if the raw materials and energy required were so abundant that no one would go hungry...

The other stuff? The molecular gastronomy types will make some beautiful delicious stuff. If the printers become a convenience appliance, the food will be as bad as most convenience food.

How about using tofu "ink" to print out a realistic looking cheese burger?

Dcarch, that's the saddest thing ever! If it were non-GMO tofu and had the realistic texture and taste of a cheeseburger, you might be onto something.. It could still look like tofu. :) (I actually like tofu, but I like hamburgers a lot more...)

People are already making gorgeous cake toppers and such from printed sugar.

ick, made by people that don't cook. But for deserts using chocolate and sugars i could see it useful. Or interesting repetitive edible containers. Designs like the chocolate snowflake. A sauce design on a plate...

To say, "who makes ravioli at home?!...now you can print it!"
Not the best way to market the thing. I would have left half those pics out. Food decoration can be time consuming...
If i was a pastry chef, i'd have one asap.
