Toffee problem�too buttery as in wet.

I have made toffee numerous times with no problems. I tried it the other night only to pour out my toffee in a pool of butter. I used a better crocker recipe..didint' add the water though (other recipes omitted the water). Basically it was equal amounts butter and sugar. for me that was 2 cups of sugar and 2 cups of butter (4 sticks).
I normally use publix or land o lakes butter, but this time tried a canyon creek butter.
The results were very odd. The toffee itself turned out pretty well, normal. But it was as if I had also poured a half a coup of butter over the top. Very strange. I really really want to make it again, but not sure what I did wrong. Any suggestions?
