How the h*#k do you shell chestnuts?

I had to bring a veggie and pie to Thanksgiving. I had a bunch of brussel sprouts in the garden. Remembering a lovely dish my uncle used to make with roasted brussel sprouts and chestnuts I picked up some chestnuts. I read directions. I cut an x in the shells and boiled them the proscribed time. A little hard to get the shell off - so a bit more time. Shells mostly off but no dice on the hairy skin. Another dip. Finally I ended up with chestnut crumbles. The dish was a hit if not at all what I remembered. My fingers were a bit singed. And I was late. Many bad words were said. The dog hid under the couch.

Now I want to figure out the right way. I bought a half pound of chestnuts and picked another batch of brussel sprouts... Suggestions?
