salted vs unsalted butter

I feel like I've asked this question before but could not find it. I read some older threads on this subject but still feel confused.

Most or maybe all recipes I have or find never say what kind of butter to use. I always have salted butter as we use it on bagels and such. I started buy unsalted butter as I have read that it is better in cookie recipes that already call for added salt.

So my grocery list has salted and unsalted butter on it. I'm just wondering do I really need to buy both? If yes are there some basic rules to follow as to which type of butter to use in a recipe? If the answer is no and I buy only salted should I reduce the amount of salt called for in a recipe? Does it even matter?
