Here's a recipe from my mother that makes yummie hors d'oeuvres.

1/2 lb butter
2 cups flour
1 teas salt
2 cups rice krispies
1/2 lb sharp cheddar cheese grated.

Mix all together. Dough will be stiff. Using a level 1/2 tablespoon measure, roll into balls. Place on ungreased cookie sheet and press down. Bake in 350 degree oven 12-15 minutes. Do not brown very much. Yields about 100 cookies. Can be frozen very successfully.

I never use processed cheese slices (it's more like the plastic it's wrapped in than the cheese it's supposed to represent - plus it costs more per pound and has little cheese flavor), but I do use shredded cheese on grilled sandwiches, and I think you will wonder why you never thought of it sooner. ;-)

"Cheese Cookies" is the name of the recipe on the recipe card given to my mom by a friend. It was probably given to her in 1960 or earlier.

I've seen similar recipes online. When I'm looking for a recipe with certain ingredients, I just put some of the ingredients into the Google Search Bar and off I go. I always find what I'm looking for.

My favorite is turnip chips (not crispy chips, but chip shaped). I usually use a ribbon grater because I'm trying to make a little go a long way, but I don't know why it wouldn't work with crumbles.

Get a flat turnip--the kind that's more disc shaped than pointy and turnipy shaped--there are usually one or two in the bin. Slice it on the finest setting on a mandoline so the slices are nearly transparent. Lay out in a single layer on a baking sheet and top with little bits of really tasty good cheddar. Broil until just beginning to brown.

SO yummy!

My recipe for Ginny's Cheese Cookies calls them "Cheese Krispies" and they are yummy! I've served these with hot mulled apple cider as an appetizer before our Thanksgiving meal.

Soak some dried figs in warm red wine. Cut into bite sized pieces. Crumble good cheddar over them and broil for a minute or two (toaster oven). Eat with warm French bread or sourdough.

Nachos - spread chips on oven safe plate or cookie sheet, add black, refried, or pinto beans, shredded chicken, pork, or beef top with cheese. Place in hot oven till cheese melts. Top with guacamole, sour cream, salsa, and pickled jalapeños.

Years ago I bought and froze a two pound piece of blue cheese from we know who. Foolishly, thawed it in the kitchen so it turned into crumbs. Was advised by seller to always thaw in the frigg - did you do that with your cheddar?

It all sounds good. I make a stuffing with figs in it for Christmas, so now, I'll just have to have them twice.

I tried to thaw in the fridge, then on the counter, leaving it as alone as I could. No fiddling. Nothing seemed to work. dang it Just my bad ability? Maybe.

Cheese does not freeze well, and goes all crumbly, as you have found.
