Substitute with Barley Malt Syrup, Did it work or not?

Having never used Barley Malt Sugar before, I am starting to add use in my bread when a recipes calls for it and in my research also see that it can be added into other recipes and substituted for some basic ingredients, This is all new to me.
I have seen that "1 cup barley malt syrup = 1/2 cup sugar (decrease liquid called for in recipe by 1/4 cup)" and wonder what changes in the final product.
How does it change things nutritionally?
Are there sugars for which it should not be used as a substitute?
Right now I am a BMS newbie....
