But listen, Hanukkah Ham, it's an alliteration! Better yet, they should have advertised it as a Chanukah Cham.

That wouldn't be a problem with AC. First the charcoal is not harmful to bacteria or anything else that is alive in the water. In fact bacteria will sometimes use the surface of the AC as a colonizing location as it does any surface in the pond. The AC does not release toxins into the water. It does not affect algae or particulates. It functions by attracting and trapping gas molecules on it's surface in a chemical reaction called adsorption. Once it has been completely covered by those molecules it stops working and must be refreshed or replaced. You should figure out where the discoloration in the water is coming from. Stains, discoloration and odors come from the breakdown of organic materials and the release of tannic acid or tannin into the water. Sources can be mulm, fish poo, excess food, dead plant material especially oak leaves and acorns and peat moss among other things. Pebbles on the bottom trap these and make the problem worse as the debris rots. Potting soil is a prime culprit. Do not use standard potting soil for pond plants. Free floating debris in the water is a particulate. It can also produce brown water. It is controlled through an efficient mechanical filtration system.It can be any of the things that cause stains in the water or other things entirely. AC does not control particulates. Mechanical filtration does not control stains and odors. All the AC you could add would not clear the water if you have material in the water that is actively rotting. To determine if you have stains, particulates or both fill a glass container with pond water and allow it to sit undisturbed for a couple of hours. Stain will remain diffused throughout the water, particulates will float or sink.

A couple possibilities. That's a Briggs OHV engine. IF the valves get out of adjustment, the compression release doesn't function. OR, you simply have a bad connection in the cranking circuit. Clean the ends of all battery cables. make sure engine mounting bolts are tight. The ground side is just as important as the "hot" side. Then there's the possibility your battery has reached the end of its life. Charge & get it load tested to be sure. A bad solenoid is also a possibility. Hi guys thanks for all your help- I am not going to repost in the other forum at this time b/c I think I got some very good information here. I went to walmart today and they were out of cactus mix. Sigh. They did have a bag of perlite tho- but I wanted to check with you guys first if this is the correct thing to buy, and if so- what do I do with it. I have a bag of miracle grow potting soil- I am assuming I need to mix these two together. I also have some small gravel- about bean sized. I plan to put him in a terra cotta pot since plastic holds the water and doesn't breath. I could use some instructions on the dirt mix tho- and as an aside- I purchased a succulent that needs to be repotted- do I use the same type of soil for him? I also have two lemon trees I grew from seed that I wanted to put into citrus mix, however they didn't even carry that this year. No they don't ever grow lemons, sometimes they flower but that's ok- the leaves smell really nice.

No, you probably won't notice the little things they got wrong. Instead, you'll notice the big things you got wrong, like not making the garage wider, not making the foyer deeper, etc. :-) This is the third house I've had built for me. The first was basically a spec house with a very few minor changes. The second was semi-custom (spec house with more substantial changes). The third was fully custom (architected plan). By the time the third, fully custom house was being built, I knew that no amount of advance planning or attention during the build was ever going to result in a perfect house. You try to get the "bones" as right as you can, and get it built in a quality manner, and then resign yourself to all the little (and sometimes big) things that either you overlooked, or didn't anticipate exactly how they would look / interact in the completed house. Tell yourself the following: If anything really, truly bugs you, it's "merely a matter of money" to fix it. Unless we're talking about impossible structural changes (like, deciding you wanted to build with ICF walls rather than stick-built -- and you're not talking about that), you can make it "right" later, if you really wish. I suspect in a few weeks or months, you won't think twice about those particular goofs. And if still you do, you can fix them. It's "merely a matter of money". :-) --Steve

That's a hoot! It reminds of a young newly married girl friend I had when we were both 18. Yes, she married VERY young. Her husband had gotten a ham from his workplace for Christmas and she thought she would see if the nice man at the Jewish deli would slice it for her. We talked.

Oh Jessy - what can I say!!! I can't believe some of the comments people made about it in the article you attached. We live in an area in Central Florida where Jews are much more of a minority than usual. I would expect that to happen here, but certainly not in a large, metropolitan area. Oh well, at least we're all laughing about it:-)

Sometimes the well-meaning stuff is the funniest -- or strangest.

At a wonderful gift shop, I once saw a display of those fancy soaps that they slice off a long bar -- you know that I mean? There were lots of designs, and I guess because several were Christmas-y, someone had come up with something they thought their Jewish customers would like: white soap with a blue Star of David on it. It looked almost exactly like the bars of soap the Nazis made from Jewish bodies. It was so creepy, I couldn't believe it. Can you just imagine? Some nice person would buy them and send them as a gift for a Jewish friend, who would wonder if it were a macabre death threat! (I gently told the clerk why I thought they probably ought to remove them.)

Oh my goodness, I'd heard about the soap making, but not the specifics of what they looked like. I probably wouldn't have bought it just because it seems weird to "cut into" a religious symbol whether it's mine or not. But I can see how someone well-meaning would buy it and never realize what they did.
