Does anyone have one of these gadgets? Do you like it? It would be for a christmas gift. I would have to buy one that used glass bottles which are considerably more expensive. I was planning on some quinine and ginger syrups anyway and suddenly thought one of these machines to go along. This is for someone who hates plastic and brings bottles of his home water on trips and now to his daughter who has town water.

Good gift for someone with a carbonated beverage habit. I bought a soda stream a year ago and it replaced buying cases of San Peligrino water at Costco and recycling the bottles. But we found ourselves not drinking it very much any more, so when my son moved out, we let him take it. It is a cost-effective way for him to enjoy diet cola.

Soda streams are easy to use and the cartridges are readily available. The one drawback is the bottles -- whether glass or plastic -- can't go in the dishwasher.

I have one like the one at the link. It's adequate for making fizzy water, appropriate for Jeeves to bring Bertie his whiskey with a splash of soda, don't you know, but it would be inadequate for making large quantities of carbonated beverages. It does have some retro cool-osity, though.

I've followed the recommended procedure on mine and it's worked just fine. Don't see any reason to use baking soda, except perhaps for cleaning the carafe if need be. Instructions were to pour a pint of white vinegar into the well, run it for 30 seconds and shut it off and let it sit to work on the buildup in there. Then finish the cycle. Run a carafe of clean water through afterward. Could do the procoedure twice if you wanted I suppose but I never have. And I always run 4-5 containers of clean (actually filtered) water through after the vinegar treatment. Frequency depends on the type of water you have and the useage of the maker.

Eleena, I recently bought the soda stream genesis at BB&B. It comes with 2 bpa free I liter bottles and a carbonator, as well as a sampler. I love it! I probably won't be saving any money, but just the fact that I no longer had to drag bottles home from the store and then save them to put out for our every-other-week recycling pickup. My daughter got an even better deal through Kohls. They carry a different model which comes with only 1 extra bottle and no sampler, but the model they have can take 2 different size carbonators, both a 60 and a 120 liter size. It's been on sale for $79.99 and she had 30% off this past week and then kohls was giving out their $10 bucks to be spent later. Only the 60 liter size carbonator seems to be available in our BB&B, and they have the exchaange units, too for 14.99. I'm assuming that I could use a coupon for the exchange too, but I'm not sure. There's also a current $10 rebate offer, see below. Just an FYI - check the expiration dates on the plastic bottles to make sure youre getting at least 2 years ahead.. Trying to give up diet soda.

I lost the first 15 or so pounds on a crazy diet about 10 years ago. But, I kept it off, for the most part. I gave up diet soda a few years ago, and told my doctor I was going to lose 10 lb. in the next month...so I dieted and I gained a pound. I quit thinking about it and over the next year, I lost 30lb. It came off so easily that I thought maybe I had some kind of chronic illness, but the only difference in my life...which was a big one....I had a total knee replacement, and though I always had to walk quite a bit taking care of my animals, etc., being totally pain free has made a big difference in that I can get outside and do more and I don't have to sit around inside all the time....because, when I do, I eat more. The "crazy diet" was the Shangrila Diet, where you drink oil before every meal. (I told you it was crazy and I have been on every diet you can think of and some you can't.) Some things I don't eat on a regular basis...like bread. I almost never eat it, although I like it okay. I also don't eat dairy...or very little, except for butter. I keep ice cream in the freezer...several kinds but I eat very little of it. I live a long way from town, so if I don't have something, I don't go get it....so I don't keep snacks in the house usually. The main difference in my life is I don't think about food all the time. Sometimes I actually forget to eat. That is so odd for me because when I used to try to diet all the time, I became obsessed with food...especially the carbs I tried to cut back on. (Went on the Carbohydrate Lover's Diet too.) I still love to cook, and I go to Pinterest and save recipes I want to try and I usually will make a new recipe once or twice a week, but I just don't eat so much at one time.

Sorry I can't help with Bubly flavors. I've had only their unsweetened seltzer. I don't buy any sweetened carbonated waters. We prefer unsweetened, but with various flavors added. I thought Bubly was unsweetened? I do check the ingredients, because 'sparkling water' seems to mean sweetened in some brands, versus 'seltzer' , which is unsweetened. For instance, Aldi's store brand is Belle Vie, and it's labelled 'sparkling water', but it's just carbonated water with natural essences - no sweeteners. I buy mostly that and Walmart's 'Clear American ' sparkling water.

I've had one for years now and glad it is popular. I can get the cartridges anywhere.
Recently bought the Source machine and took my old one to the vacation home.
Wish they were all glass but i saved a case of the small peligrinos and re-use/refill those for travel...(just fill from the provided bottles)
I dish wash mine on the regular setting every once in a while. No problem but not recommended. We pour into drinking glasses from the ones in the fridge so they stay clean for a while. No more seltzer cans and bottles to haul and return.
I really like that i can use my own filtered water and fresh fruit varieties and have a choice in how much fizz i want. Ginger, lemon/lime, fresh grapefruit...Fresca! But less sweet.

Bought my DH a SodaStream several years ago when he decided to quit soft drinks and go to carbonated water full time. Its been wonderful! We trade in our empty carbonation cartridges and get fresh ones for around $14 a piece. You use to have a little problem finding the cartridges, but anymore I think everyone carries them and offers a lower price on the trade ins. Ours goes everywhere with us and when it bites the dust, another one will be bought immediately to replace it.

Another question - have you made any syrups to flavour the soda. I am thinking quinine and ginger. His daughter suggested birch/sarsaparilla. Maybe a citrusy one...
