Grilling - For a Party of One

My wife is vegetarian so when I grill it is just for myself. I only have a steak or sometimes a hamburger. No sides...just steak. I do order quality prime steaks from Allen brothers.

I gave my Weber grill away and bought an esbit grill. For you guys out there who may have been in the boy scouts you would remember this small fold up type of grill or stove that is part of the basic camping gear of a boy scout. With about ten pieces of charcoal I have enough to grill my steak. Flame tablets come with the stove (I believe these were developed by the space program) but I have not used these yet.

I will try to post a picture of the esbit grill.

So with a couple of margaritas and a wonderful perfectly done prime steak and a sunny warm day I am all set. Grilling is a fun activity.

Steak and margaritas sounds perfect. But why not throw some veggies on for your wife (and for you) while you're at it?

That reminds me of the single grate Hibachis that we grilled on in college.

How big is it? I can't tell scale from the picture.

Jessica, that is NOT "Bulldog". That would be "Pitbull". And I earned that through years of being a complete and total b*tch, so I wear the designation proudly. I AM "The Pitbull". It's not pretty, and so the "egg pictures" were redacted. LOL It sure is hard to believe that my little sweetheart is three, isn't it? Eileen, that was the ever-present "veggie pizza", my daughters love the stuff. Bake a crust out of crescent roll dough. Yeah, the stuff in the can, LOL. Mix a brick of cream cheese with a cup of mayo and some dry ranch dressing mix. I don't measure, just dump the dressing mix in, stir and taste until it's good. Top with fresh vegetables of your choice, chopped into pieces small enough to eat easily. Mine usually has cauliflower, broccoli, some green onions, carrots, red peppers. Even the kids gobble it down, go figure. I made it once with homemade pizza dough and no one wanted it. Back to the canned crescent rolls. (grin) Annie

I am just checking in now! Our exchange student has left for home and DS #2 and I are recovering with sore throats, coughing, and general malaise. Eh, life happens. Peppi kudos to you for hosting. Your dad is so sweet! WONDERFUL time y'all had! Gina and I have a couple of Korean market near us exactly like that. Next time anyone is in town, I or Gina can take you to some Korean restaurants to sample some of the items you saw at the food court. I couldn't read the food items but I recognized most of them. Oh, I *wish* I could visit Scotland again. When I was 14 and touring Edinburgh I didn't know an ancestor built what is now called the John Knox house. (He supported 'the wrong side'; was hung; his house awarded to Knox. Guess you had to know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em even in the days of Mary, Queen of Scots!) Another method is to use a chimney starter like the video I linked below.

You can use a hair dryer to help the chimney starter blasting in a few seconds and You can have a steak in a few minutes.

Afterwards, put a cover on the starter to smother the fire and use the charcoal a few more times.

Cute and fun. I looked for a little grill like that when I got one for BF's birthday. He wanted gas and I just went with the Weber portable one--path of least resistance. I got the cart to set it on because I was going to need something like that anyway. Sometimes wish I had gotten something different because the Weber is a pain to clean and BF uses a cast iron pan on it anyway, because of that. He still likes to grill outside to keep the smoke and heat out of the kitchen, and it saves money for us due to us having an electric stove.
